Background / History

Childhood in Konoha

Kaede grows up in the Uchiha household of Mingye and Kaori, retaining memories and knowledge from a previous life. As a small child, she already recognizes the dangers of war and the Uchiha’s future, setting herself the immediate goal of growing up safely. Her parents’ affection gradually makes her regard them as genuine family rather than merely the parents of her new body 2 6 234.

Mingye’s battlefield duties repeatedly separate him from the household. After returning with wounded shinobi and the bodies of fallen clansmen, he is ordered back to the front, leaving a wooden kunai beside Kaede’s pillow as a birthday present 2.

At the Ninja Academy, Kaede publicly declares her ambition to become Hokage. She later considers gaining the villagers’ recognition and approaching the Hokage’s faction as a possible means of saving the Uchiha 10 20.

ANBU Service and Wartime Training

Kaede enters the Hokage’s Direct ANBU alongside Shisui and chooses the codename Hikari. She encourages Shisui to share her ambition of bringing peace to the shinobi world, while privately acknowledging that her efforts to win his trust are calculated 29.

Her early missions establish her as a lightning specialist and swordswoman. She defeats bandit samurai while supporting Tong, then learns Flying Thunder God from Minato and becomes Jiraiya’s disciple. During fighting against Sunagakure, she survives poisoned traps and draws Pakura away from her exhausted team 23 24 40 42 52 54.

Away from combat, Kaede invests in Teuchi’s business to expand Ichiraku Ramen. The birth of her younger sister Quan gives her another personal reason to protect the clan’s future 26 27.

The Uchiha Relocation Plan

Kaede secures a foothold in the Land of Snow by confronting Kazahana Sōsetsu. She shows him an illusion of Dōtō’s future rebellion and threatens both him and Koyuki before subsequently promising lifelong protection for his family if he remains loyal to the Uchiha 67 68 69.

She then proposes moving the entire Uchiha Clan out of Konoha. Fugaku challenges her authority, leading to a duel in which Kaede and Winter overcome his Susanoo through Natural Energy and a decisive lightning technique 70 72 73.

The relocation proceeds through secrecy and staged losses. Mingye’s apparent death is fabricated, allowing him to appear later among the settlers in the Land of Snow. Kaede assigns the transferred clan members roles in building their new home and its medical infrastructure 91 112 113.

Hidden God Village and the Nine-Tails Incident

After her Divine Bloodline and God’s Eye emerge, Kaede takes Pakura to the developing Hidden God Village and introduces her as her lover. Her transformation makes remaining unnoticed in Konoha increasingly difficult, although she continues carrying out work for Minato 137.

During the Nine-Tails incident, Kaede engineers her own apparent death. Because her body cannot be cloned, she personally fights the Nine-Tails while Miroku seals her regeneration, making the death convincing. She subsequently allows suspicion over her missing or altered corpse to fall on Danzō 150 151.

Before leaving Konoha, she preserves Kushina’s damaged soul and directs Fugaku to let resentment against the village build until the remaining Uchiha are willing to depart. She takes a final look at the village where she grew up before returning to the Land of Snow 151 152.

Expansion and Family Conflict

Kaede builds Hidden God Village into a military, religious, and economic power. She shelters the injured Fuguki, orders the rescue of persecuted bloodline clans, and uses Ice Ocean Port as both a commercial center and an intelligence station 166 183.

After uncovering a slave-trading network connected to Kusagakure, she rescues Karin and adopts her following her mother’s death. Her anger becomes a wider campaign to destroy Kusagakure and occupy the Land of Grass. The invasion combines Chakra Armor, reconnaissance, specialized squads, and army-scale teleportation; Kaede orders lethal action against resistance, including resisting civilians 188 190 191 192.

Kaede also manipulates the Uchiha massacre’s outcome. She forces Quan to witness Itachi’s actions, then supplies soulless clones of Fugaku and Mikoto to preserve the appearance of their deaths. Her refusal to let Quan reunite immediately with Itachi causes a lasting family rift 203 204 225 235.

By her later return home, Hidden God Village governs the Land of Snow, Land of Grass, and Land of Waterfall. Kaede nevertheless believes its peace requires continued involvement in the wider world because threats such as the Ōtsutsuki and the Eye of the Moon plan remain unresolved 225.

Temporal Conflict and Kaguya

Kaede opens a Gate of Time to intercept Ōtsutsuki Urashiki. After overpowering him, she faces an unidentified, stronger Ōtsutsuki whose power matches her own. Their battle destabilizes the timeline; Kaede refuses to disengage, and temporal annihilation consumes both combatants 269 270 271.

Severely injured and displaced, she receives shelter from the Forest Deity, then recovers by absorbing stellar energy. Investigating the devastated planet, she recognizes Kaguya and concludes that she has reached an era more than a thousand years before her own 273 274.

Kaede later reveals that she has replaced a Ten-Tails’ newborn consciousness with a fragment of her own soul, giving herself ultimate authority over it. She plans to have Kaguya wound Isshiki and let him fight the planet’s deity before taking the Chakra Fruit 281 283.

In Takamagahara, Kaede eventually persuades the withdrawn Kaguya to live among humans. They operate a coastal flower shop for three years. When war destroys that peaceful life, Kaguya decides to unite humanity under her rule; Kaede reluctantly supports her and provides Mystic Guards for her protection 290.

Appearance

  • Early features: A handsome face, dark bright eyes, and thick hair that later grows long enough to stream behind her during combat 12 13 23.
  • Birthmark: A green bear-head mark on her right forearm, present in infancy 2.
  • Temporary battle damage: White streaks at her temples and bleeding eyes alarm Pakura after a dangerous encounter 135.
  • Combat attire: Uses an ANBU mask and short sword during her encounter with Jiraiya; later wears identity-concealing Chakra Armor 37 192.

Personality

Kaede combines warmth and irreverent humor with calculated manipulation. She jokes with friends, teases her teachers, and is willing to spend money on others, but also deliberately cultivates Shisui’s trust and conceals important plans from those closest to her 26 29 42 104.

Her affection for family is genuine and frequently overprotective. Quan’s safety and future strongly influence her decisions, yet her attempts to control Quan’s relationship with Itachi leave her sister feeling isolated. Karin’s adoption is likewise a sincere commitment: Kaede explicitly promises to treat her as her own child 188 191 225 235.

Her ruthlessness is selective rather than consistent. She refuses to turn the dying Dai into a rune creature on moral grounds and offers defeated Fuguki a dignified future, but also threatens Koyuki, exploits the Uchiha’s resentment, and authorizes brutal treatment of Kusagakure’s resistance 68 88 151 166 192.

As her divinity develops, she becomes more detached from ordinary mortality and increasingly views bloodline, loyalty, and political suffering as resources. Tong notices both the earlier hardening of her temperament and the growing distance created by her divine presence, while retaining faith that Kaede will remain beside the people she loves 151 236 268.

Abilities & Skills

Lightning Release and Electromagnetism

Lightning is Kaede’s primary combat specialty, supported by an exceptional physique and rune-derived affinity 6 11.

  • Lightning Garment: Stimulates neural transmission, increases speed and toughness, and releases lightning into enemies along her path. Unlike the Raikage’s chakra coating, its surface consists of genuine lightning 11.
  • Lightning techniques: Uses Ground Run, Lightning Ball, Lightning Spear, and Lightning Dragon Tornado 6 53 89 199 222.
  • Electromagnetic bloodline: Enables flight and the acceleration of small objects into destructive projectiles; Kaede distinguishes it from ordinary ninjutsu 229.
  • Early limitation: She can control her own lightning but cannot yet control another person’s Lightning Release or transform her body into lightning 11 12.
  • Divine application: Thunder Roar and the Lightning Realm restrain Urashiki and cut off his attempted dimensional escape 270.

Sharingan and God’s Eye

Kaede’s ocular power develops from the Sharingan into the God’s Eye through her Divine Bloodline 35 37 137.

  • Combines Sharingan motion perception with Lightning Garment’s reaction speed to control attacks without hitting teammates 11.
  • Uses genjutsu to make Sōsetsu experience Dōtō’s rebellion and Koyuki’s subsequent suffering 68.
  • Initially suppresses her eye power because its Yin Release influence threatens her rational judgment; forcing a Mangekyō awakening damages her eyes 35.
  • Later perception extends beyond ordinary sight, allowing her to detect surrounding movement and inspect an entire battlefield 194 198.
  • Manifests a winged, armored Susanoo; a later battle shows a purple Susanoo wielding her Lightning Spear 141 271.

Rune Energy, Divine Power, and Regeneration

Kaede’s growth increasingly depends on rune energy and Divine Power rather than conventional chakra alone 61 269.

  • Refines Natural Energy to strengthen body and soul and replenish her reserves 61 72 73.
  • Supports Dai’s remaining life with rune energy without transforming him into a rune creature 88.
  • Her unusual energy injures Samehada when it attempts to consume it; Urashiki cannot absorb her Divine Power 108 269.
  • Regeneration allows her to survive catastrophic organ damage, although temporal annihilation still leaves injuries requiring extended recovery 271 274.
  • Directly absorbs stellar energy, bypassing the planetary conversion into Natural Energy that most deities and lifeforms require 273.

Space-Time Techniques

Kaede learns Flying Thunder God from Minato and later develops much broader temporal abilities 40 269.

  • Flying Thunder God: Used for rapid travel, battlefield rescue, and surprise attacks 70 89.
  • Flying Thunder God Slash: Combines space-time movement with sword attacks against puppet masters and groups of Sand shinobi 52 54.
  • Formation transport: Connects distant locations and supports moving an invasion force in successive waves 192 260.
  • Time Realm: Conceals her movements and protects her during encounters within Yakumo’s Inner World and near the God Tree 257 274 280.
  • Gate of Time: Requires the Sword of Time and substantial Faith Power for the operation used against Urashiki 269.

Soul and Bloodline Manipulation

Kaede can act directly upon souls and transmit aspects of her divine lineage 151 235.

  • Preserves Kushina’s incomplete soul inside Boundless; resurrection remains beyond her developing divinity at that point, while Minato’s soul must first be reclaimed from the Death God 151 190.
  • Enters Yakumo’s Inner World through soul force and confronts Ido 257 258.
  • Splits her consciousness into a Ten-Tails’ newborn soul, retaining the highest authority over the creature 281.
  • Her growing bloodline strengthens relatives’ physiques, souls, and lifespans, with her parents and Quan receiving the strongest benefits 233.
  • Transfers heart-blood essence to Dōtō as a reward, granting him deity-derived power 235.
  • Uses Divine Power to neutralize Caged Bird Seals; Neji’s seal remains outwardly intact to preserve secrecy 198 260.

Swordsmanship and Taijutsu

Kaede initially emphasizes lightning-enhanced swordsmanship, then develops taijutsu that eventually surpasses her ninjutsu 23 24 270.

  • Lightning Sword: Condensed Light: Extends a translucent lightning edge from her short sword, cutting beyond the weapon’s physical reach 23 51.
  • Thunder Sword: Round Dance: Defeats the bandit chief’s secret technique 24.
  • Can deliberately stop her lightning enhancement to test opponents using physical strength and sword skill alone 24.
  • Decades of practice and bodily strengthening allow her to overwhelm Urashiki in close combat 270.

Summoning and Command

Kaede combines personal power with summons, intelligence networks, and organized military forces 72 183 192.

  • Summons Winter, a giant Ice Bear with lightning abilities, and communicates with her through a soul connection established by the Nature Spirit Rune 72.
  • Coordinates reconnaissance, assault, hunting, sealing, and barrier units during the Kusagakure invasion 192.
  • Integrates Chakra Armor, the Dragon Vein, Faith Power, and teleportation formations into military planning 191.
  • Recognizes logistical limits: her initial invasion supplies support a decisive battle, not a prolonged siege 191.

  • Forest Deity — Rescuer and potential ally. Kaede promises to repay her aid but remains wary of being used against the Ōtsutsuki 273 274.
  • Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — Initially a guarded collaborator; later shares three years of ordinary life with Kaede before pursuing humanity’s unification with her support 281 283 290.
