Background / History
The Uchiha were one of Konoha's two founding clans alongside the Senju. Their status declined after Hashirama Senju dispersed the Senju throughout the village, weakening the prestige both founding clans had accumulated since the Warring States Period. As civilian access to ninjutsu expanded through the Ninja Academy system, the village increasingly replaced clan interests as Konoha's central political identity 153 154.
Within Konoha, the clan retained an elite and noble reputation, but its Sharingan made it a target of suspicion and suppression. Kaede attributes much of this hostility to the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, whose forbidden techniques were particularly effective against Sharingan users 7. The clan's isolation also harmed its standing with ordinary villagers, while Fugaku was criticized for focusing on political power rather than public support 20.
The Uchiha traditionally preserved their bloodline by marrying within the clan. They also maintained extensive private training and did not send every child to the Ninja Academy; exceptional children were trained internally by clan jonin instead 9 33.
During the Third Shinobi World War, the clan suffered substantial casualties. Some members were secretly relocated to the Land of Snow, while others remained on Konoha's battlefields and died 116.
After the Nine-Tails attack, Konoha's leadership seized Uchiha territory, froze clan assets, and sought to move the clan to an isolated part of the village. These actions further alienated Fugaku and intensified the clan's conflict with Konoha 153 154.
The clan ultimately executed a relocation plan disguised as the Uchiha massacre. Most supposed victims were transferred to new clan grounds, while Itachi and Shisui remained in Konoha as part of the deception 203 204. Upon reaching God Shinobi Village, the Uchiha accepted Kaede as their new patriarch and settled in the village's innermost ring 205.
Traits and Bloodline
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha's kekkei genkai and their most valued inheritance. Its desirability to other shinobi contributed to the clan's persecution within Konoha 7.
- Enables heightened visual perception; Uchiha Inabi uses it to track fast-moving projectiles and break free from a Water Prison Technique 161 162.
- Supports powerful genjutsu, including the large-scale Ninpō: Rain Curtain, which incapacitated most personnel at Gato Company headquarters 161.
- Can evolve into the Mangekyō Sharingan under extreme circumstances.
- Mangekyō use causes progressive blindness because the user's mortal body and incomplete Sage Eye genes cannot fully sustain it 35.
Mangekyō Sharingan
The Mangekyō is a rare advanced state of the Sharingan. It grants individualized ocular techniques and access to Susanoo, but its use accelerates blindness 35 36.
- Kaede awakened the Mangekyō and used its power to punish Uchiha elders painlessly before revealing Susanoo to secure their submission 35 36.
- Fugaku possessed both Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo; his ocular technique is Flame Style 71 200.
- Tong later revealed her own Mangekyō during a leadership crisis, establishing her authority before Fugaku and other clan members 269.
- The Eternal Mangekyō can be reached by combining another set of dōjutsu power and genes, restoring the user's incomplete ocular inheritance 35.
Fire Style
Fire Style is the clan's traditional signature ninjutsu and a major source of Uchiha pride. Many of its powerful techniques were developed or improved by the clan itself 70.
- Considered so central to clan identity that an Uchiha unable to use Fire Style is regarded as unqualified by tradition 70.
- Inabi employs Fire Style in combat alongside his Sharingan 162.
- Fugaku's Mangekyō-based Flame Style leaves scorched earth after an attack 200.
Divine Bloodline Adaptation
Fu's incomplete Divine Bloodline began manifesting in Uchiha relatives, including Quan. The change appears to alter the clan's inherited traits 144.
- Optimizes Sharingan power as Yin Release Chakra within the eyes is gradually replaced.
- Produces golden lightning patterns around the eyes.
- Grants an innate affinity for lightning manipulation.
- Enhances physique and self-healing.
- May cause additional, unknown changes to the soul 144.
By the later period, the Uchiha's specialized Lightning Style was considered stronger than their former Fire Style specialization 235.
