Background / History
The Xu Family rose to a place among Flying Bird City's Five Great Noble Houses, replacing the declining Qin Family. Households of that rank are described as having at least three to five Celestial Firmament experts 8 9.
The family's conflict with Shen Zhou began when its young master, Xu Liansheng, ordered customers out of a teahouse. Shen Zhou defeated his attendants and took Liansheng captive, obtaining a portion of the family's clan-guarding Wild Desolate Art as the price of his release. Shen Zhou gave the false name “Yang Guo,” causing the Xu Family to pursue a dispute with the unrelated Yang Family 8 9 21 22.
When Liansheng found Shen Zhou again, Xu Family Martial Hall master Xu Tianqiao confronted him and lost an arm in their fight. Shen Zhou later collected the remainder of the Wild Desolate Art from the family at the North Mountain mine negotiations. After witnessing Shen Zhou's strength, the Xu Family agreed to split the Fire Crystal mine equally with the Qin Family, staging five wins for each side to preserve appearances 23 32 33.
The conciliatory stance concealed Xu Mengfu's plan to seize the Qin Family's Taixuan Sword. The Xu Family invited the Qin Family to explore a newly revealed secret realm at the mine; inside, Xu You and Xu Baxia attacked the Qin party while Shen Zhou was away. Xu Mengfu arrived with additional elites and stated that the sword was his objective 38 45 49.
