Ch. 181Netero's Shock

Key events

  • With time running out, Netero clears the area and remains with Moyu, who agrees to show him something.
  • Moyu uses his Replication Nen Box to produce an Enhanced Nen Needle, a tool that can control a person and access their memories and soul.
  • He inserts the needle into Davidson, whose hostility flares at the sight of Moyu’s ominous Nen.
  • The needle exposes Davidson’s memories to Moyu. He learns that Davidson originally created Swamp Man in the hope of bringing someone back from the dead, before his work became consumed by hatred.
  • Moyu takes control of Davidson and makes him deactivate the ability. Davidson resists verbally, but his Ten appears, confirming that Swamp Man is off.
  • Davidson dies quietly as his time runs out, and the needle disappears.

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu accepts Netero’s request despite his reservations, revealing a power he had kept hidden. He remains focused and composed while accessing Davidson’s memories and using the needle, though he dislikes the prospect of invading them.
  • Netero watches in astonishment. The display convinces him that Moyu can wield Post-Mortem Nen at will, deepening his fascination with the young Hunter.
  • Davidson shifts from passive resignation to renewed hostility when Moyu’s Nen appears. His memories reveal a more hopeful origin to Swamp Man than its hateful nature suggests. Under Moyu’s control, he deactivates the ability before dying.

Significant themes

  • The unknown power of Nen: Moyu’s abilities shock even Netero, underscoring how Nen can produce effects beyond established understanding.
  • Hope corrupted by despair: Davidson’s ability began as an attempt to revive someone, but his suffering and hatred transformed it into something catastrophic.
  • Control, consent, and moral cost: Moyu’s intervention saves others, but requires overriding Davidson’s will and entering his memories.
  • Time and mortality: The countdown frames the scene, and Davidson dies immediately after the crisis is resolved.

Ch. 182Rewards

Plot points and events

  • Moyu’s Enhanced Nen Needle neutralizes Swamp Man’s dangerous ability. He gains enough information to recreate it, but rejects the idea: the ability cannot control the Marshfolk and forces its user into Zetsu.
  • Perception rewards Moyu with an additional exorcism opportunity and a one-time use of 100-Type Guanyin: First Palm, which he regards as powerful enough to save his life.
  • Netero thanks Moyu for his decisive role in the operation and offers him a request as compensation.
  • Moyu asks the Hunter Association to resolve the Nen Space at Lielin Scenic Area. Netero explains that the Association has already taken on that mission, leaving Moyu to request a fight with him instead.
  • Moyu then reminds Netero to verify that Swamp Man’s ability has truly disappeared.

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu shows restraint: although he briefly wonders whether different choices might have earned greater rewards, he refuses to make risky decisions merely to gain them. He also remains focused on helping with Elena’s Nen Space rather than seeking personal credit.
  • Netero recognizes Moyu’s contribution, assures him that Cheadle’s work will also be acknowledged, and offers him a reward. He is amused by Moyu choosing a sparring match, but his laughter ends when Moyu raises the practical question of confirming Swamp Man’s ability is gone.

Significant themes

  • Responsibility over reward: Moyu’s choices are guided by sound judgment and concern for others, not by the pursuit of recognition.
  • Abilities reflect their creators: Nen powers can grow out of a person’s past experiences and interests, as illustrated by Swamp Man, Hisoka, and Killua.
  • Recognition and cooperation: Netero makes clear that the Association will credit both Moyu and Cheadle, affirming the value of their contributions.

Ch. 183What a Jerk!

Key plot points and events

  • After the Swamp Man incident is contained, Moyu asks Netero for a chance to experience the impact of Netero’s 100-Type Guanyin firsthand. He expects to be overwhelmed and is eager to learn from the experience, but Netero must first confirm that the threat is fully resolved.
  • Moyu stays in Shivadani City, where Piyon repeatedly visits him and he makes a point of taking the overworked Sambika out to eat.
  • Piyon breaks into Moyu’s hotel room using her Nen ability and challenges him to a game. Moyu wins, then makes her clean his room as the agreed-upon forfeit.
  • Cheadle earns a promotion to Three-Star Hunter for her role in the operation. Moyu reflects that Pariston and Light missed out on possible advancement by not participating.
  • Sambika invites Fiona, a Shingen-ryu Hunter who had guarded Moyu during the operation, to join their meal. Moyu says he plans to visit Liz, then go to Heavens Arena to sharpen his skills without relying on his Nen ability.
  • Kanzai spots Moyu dining with Sambika and Fiona, misreads the situation, and calls Piyon to report that Moyu is with other women. Piyon is unmoved, leaving Kanzai baffled and convinced that Moyu is an unusually lucky “scumbag.”

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu is ambitious and curious about testing himself against Netero, while remaining practical about his current limitations. He also shows consideration for Sambika by encouraging her to eat regularly, and looks forward to Menchi’s progress under Liz’s instruction.
  • Piyon is playful, intrusive, and highly competitive, but accepts her loss and honors the bet. Her casual response to Kanzai’s gossip shows she does not regard Moyu’s meal with other women as a problem.
  • Sambika remains quiet and considerate. She invites Fiona along and cautiously asks Moyu about his future plans, suggesting she values spending time with him.
  • Fiona is interested in Moyu and hopes to build a useful friendship with him, though her reserve makes socializing difficult.
  • Kanzai is impulsive and prone to dramatic assumptions. His call to Piyon reveals both his concern and his confusion about her easygoing attitude.

Significant themes

  • Change and consequence: Moyu sees himself as a major force whose arrival inevitably alters events and the wider world.
  • Growth through challenge: His requests to face Netero and train at Heavens Arena reflect his desire to improve through direct experience.
  • Contrasting personalities and lifestyles: Piyon’s abundant free time contrasts with Sambika’s workaholism, while Fiona’s reserve contrasts with Piyon’s boldness.
  • Misunderstanding and comedy: Kanzai’s assumptions turn an ordinary meal into imagined romantic scandal, providing the chapter’s comic conclusion.

Ch. 184Moyu vs. Netero

Chapter Summary: Moyu vs. Netero

Key Plot Points and Events

After an enormous meal, Moyu parts ways with Sambika and Fiona. Before leaving, Fiona hesitantly asks to exchange contact information with him, which Moyu gladly accepts. Wanting to avoid returning to the hotel and dealing with Piyon’s pestering, Moyu spends several hours wandering through the city and a museum.
His time outside is interrupted when he receives a message from Beans informing him that Chairman Netero is ready to meet him at the Shingen-ryu Dojo. Moyu becomes excited because he has specifically requested a sparring match with Netero, not as a way to win a reward, but to study and experience the techniques of the world’s strongest Nen user.
At the dojo, Moyu finds Netero waiting, accompanied by Beans, Cheadle, and Fiona. Cheadle is present in case Moyu is injured, while Fiona appears to have been invited as an observer and may have a deeper connection to Netero through Shingen-ryu. Moyu prepares for battle and asks Netero to use the 100-Type Guanyin immediately without holding back. He also requests only a countdown before the fight begins.
Once the match starts, Netero instantly summons the 100-Type Guanyin and launches its First Palm. Moyu avoids the attack by charging forward before the palm can descend. The strike misses him and leaves a large crater in the dojo floor.
Netero quickly realizes that Moyu had anticipated the First Palm rather than merely evading it by luck. Moyu had repeatedly visualized the 100-Type Guanyin’s movements while observing it inside Nen Space, memorizing its attack patterns, angles, and timing. Netero is impressed by Moyu’s preparation and begins adapting his own strategy.
Instead of using the expected Second Hand, Netero unexpectedly repeats the First Palm. This places Moyu under tremendous pressure, but Moyu recognizes the attack early. He creates a Shadow Copy through “Soul Echo” and uses it as a projectile. By striking the Shadow Copy with all his strength, Moyu launches it toward Netero while using the recoil to send himself backward.
Netero’s First Palm still catches and severely injures Moyu, blasting him into the arena wall and knocking him unconscious. However, before Moyu loses consciousness, the Shadow Copy reaches Netero and thrusts its palm toward his throat. The attack only grazes Netero, and the Shadow Copy vanishes before it can complete the strike because Moyu can no longer maintain it.
The battle ends in less than three seconds, with Netero overwhelmingly victorious. Nevertheless, Moyu succeeds in forcing Netero to acknowledge his extraordinary preparation, perception, and combat instincts. Cheadle and Fiona are left stunned that Moyu managed to launch even a minor counterattack against Netero, while Netero looks forward to seeing Moyu grow into a more worthy opponent in the future.

Character Developments

Moyu

Moyu demonstrates that his request for a fight is driven by a desire for growth rather than pride or rewards. His extensive mental practice with the 100-Type Guanyin allows him to predict Netero’s First Palm and react within an almost impossible timeframe. Though he is defeated and seriously injured, he proves that he can find a narrow opening even against an opponent vastly beyond his current level. His willingness to accept defeat while still searching for a chance to “win” reveals both humility and exceptional combat intelligence.

Netero

Netero initially expects the fight to be effortless, but Moyu’s familiarity with the Guanyin forces him to take the match more seriously. He identifies Moyu’s deliberate preparation and adjusts by repeating the First Palm to disrupt his expectations. Netero remains dominant, but he becomes genuinely interested in Moyu’s potential and regrets that the battle may have taken place before Moyu had fully matured.

Cheadle

Cheadle’s concern for Moyu is obvious. She understands the enormous gap between the two fighters and worries that Netero may accidentally become too forceful. After Moyu manages to threaten Netero’s throat, her concern shifts into shock and admiration.

Fiona

Fiona observes the match with intense curiosity. Her understanding of Netero’s abilities allows her to recognize that Moyu’s opening move was calculated rather than lucky. The encounter deepens her appreciation of Moyu’s abilities and gives her a clearer sense of his unusual combat potential.

Beans

Beans acts as the timekeeper and initially misinterprets Moyu’s successful evasion as luck or reckless aggression. He is left bewildered by the battle’s unexpected turn.

Significant Themes

Growth through defeat

Moyu does not measure the fight by victory or defeat. He views even a brutal loss as worthwhile if it provides insight into Netero’s techniques and combat mentality.

Preparation versus overwhelming power

Netero possesses vastly superior strength, speed, and Nen mastery, but Moyu’s preparation allows him to exploit a tiny opening. The chapter highlights how planning and familiarity can create possibilities even against an overwhelmingly stronger opponent.

The value of prediction

Moyu’s memorization of the 100-Type Guanyin’s First Palm is the key to surviving the opening exchange. His ability to predict the attack demonstrates that battle knowledge can temporarily compensate for a massive power difference.

Potential and the future

Netero sees the battle less as a completed contest than as a glimpse of Moyu’s future. Moyu is not yet a true threat, but his talent suggests that he may eventually become an opponent capable of forcing Netero to fight seriously.

The narrow boundary between success and failure

Moyu’s counterattack comes within a fraction of success. Had he remained conscious for another instant, the Shadow Copy might have landed a more substantial blow. The scene emphasizes how, at the highest level, victory or defeat can depend on less than a second.

Character Interactions

Moyu and Sambika

They part amicably after the meal, with Sambika waving goodbye from a taxi.

Moyu and Fiona

Fiona’s request to exchange contact information suggests that she wants to maintain a connection with Moyu. Their brief interaction establishes mutual respect and may lead to future cooperation.

Moyu and Netero

Their match is both a physical confrontation and an exchange of combat understanding. Moyu tries to learn from Netero’s technique, while Netero studies Moyu’s preparation and adapts to his expectations. Although Netero wins decisively, he acknowledges Moyu as an unusually promising junior.

Moyu and Cheadle

Cheadle’s concern contrasts with Moyu’s calm determination. She views the match as dangerously one-sided, while Moyu willingly accepts the risk for the sake of improvement.

Moyu and Fiona

Fiona recognizes the deliberate nature of Moyu’s movements, unlike Beans, who initially assumes Moyu succeeded through luck. Her observation reinforces the idea that Moyu’s actions were carefully planned.

Netero and the observers

Netero’s control of the match reassures him that Moyu will survive, but his unexpected tactical adjustment surprises the observers. The battle allows Cheadle, Fiona, and Beans to witness both Netero’s overwhelming power and Moyu’s remarkable potential firsthand.

Ch. 185I Can Use the 100-Type Guanyin

Key plot points and events

  • Moyu’s match with Netero ends after Moyu’s Shadow Clone manages to land a palm strike on Netero’s neck. Netero leaves without checking on him, while Fiona and Cheadle arrange medical care.
  • Moyu is badly injured but survives; Cheadle explains that Netero held back, since a full-strength blow would likely have killed him. Moyu is told to rest for about a month and is forbidden from using Nen-based healing because it would consume his cells.
  • During recovery, Moyu practices Zetsu and reviews the fight. He concludes that he still lacks endurance, reflects on how much he learned from facing Netero, and wonders whether he briefly experienced Heart Drop Fist Hearing.
  • Moyu’s colleagues visit, but his relentless training sparks a noisy exchange between Kanzai and Piyon. Kanzai asks how Moyu dodged Netero’s attacks; Moyu jokingly claims he can use the 100-Type Guanyin, and Kanzai dismisses it as a joke.
  • After a month, Moyu returns to Laxiang City, where he watches Menchi train and sees her progress. He plans to take her to Heavens Arena to improve her Nen before they register for the Hunter Exam.
  • Moyu and Menchi leave for Heavens Arena. On the airship, Menchi asks to learn her Nen Type, but Moyu tells her to master the fundamentals and Hatsu first.

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu shows exceptional resolve, even against an opponent far beyond his level. The fight deepens his understanding of his limitations and gives him a valuable glimpse of a possible advanced state. His commitment to training continues despite his injuries.
  • Netero respects Moyu’s persistence and appears to have deliberately limited his force, leaving Moyu seriously injured but alive.
  • Fiona is astonished by Moyu’s performance and gains new respect for him. She recounts the fight to Kanzai.
  • Cheadle carefully oversees Moyu’s treatment and urges him to rest, while recognizing his determination to train.
  • Kanzai and Piyon trade teasing insults, with Kanzai’s pride especially stung by Piyon’s reference to his past defeat by Moyu. Their bickering disrupts the hospital corridor.
  • Liz is glad to see Moyu but accepts his decision to leave promptly, asking him to contact her if he needs help.
  • Menchi has clearly improved through diligent practice and remains eager to advance, while Moyu takes a mentor’s role in keeping her focused on fundamentals.

Significant themes

  • Persistence in the face of overwhelming odds: Moyu’s determination matters as much as his preparation.
  • Growth through failure and experience: The fight teaches Moyu both how far he has to go and what new possibilities he may have glimpsed.
  • Discipline and patience: Moyu and Menchi are urged to master foundational training before pursuing shortcuts or advanced knowledge.
  • Care versus ambition: Cheadle and others urge recovery, while Moyu’s drive pushes him to train whenever he can.

Ch. 186New to Heavens Arena

Chapter Summary: “New to Heavens Arena”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Moyu and Menchi arrive at Heavens Arena, a massive 251-floor skyscraper famous for attracting thousands of fighters and over a billion spectators annually.
  • While waiting more than two hours to register, Menchi learns that fighters can earn money and fame by competing. She admits she lost the informational booklet Moyu gave her.
  • Because Heavens Arena’s preliminary matches use declared fighting experience to determine advancement, Moyu tells Menchi to claim twenty years of experience despite having no formal fighting training. Moyu himself registers under the alias “Illumi” and claims thirty years of experience.
  • Menchi receives contestant number 3079, while Moyu receives 3080. They proceed to the first floor, where sixteen rings host preliminary battles.
  • Menchi criticizes the contestants’ flashy but ineffective techniques, judging them by the harsher standards of wilderness survival. Moyu agrees that they are weak but believes their methods may still offer something to learn.
  • Menchi is assigned to fight contestant 3142, a large, overconfident man who assumes she will be an easy opponent. She effortlessly blocks his attack and kicks him into the spectator stands, advancing directly to the 100th floor.
  • Moyu is then matched against contestant 3772, a fast but sinister-looking fighter. Moyu casually avoids his attack and trips him out of the ring, earning advancement to the 60th floor.
  • Outside the arena, Menchi is surprised that Moyu advanced only to the 60th floor. Moyu explains that judges likely evaluated them differently: Menchi’s powerful offense earned her a higher placement, while his technical style led to a lower one.
  • Moyu and Menchi separate, with Menchi heading to the 100th floor and Moyu going to collect his prize money on the 60th floor.
  • At the 60th-floor counter, a silver-haired child overhears the staff call Moyu “Illumi,” setting up a likely encounter or complication at the chapter’s end.

Character Developments

  • Moyu: Demonstrates strategic thinking by using false fighting experience and adopting the alias Illumi. He remains calm, observant, and unconcerned by the crowd’s hostility. His effortless victory confirms his exceptional skill, while his decision to go to the prize counter suggests he is focused on practical rewards and possibly broader goals.
  • Menchi: Shows her blunt, survival-oriented view of combat. Though she lacks formal fighting experience, her instincts, strength, and aggression make her overwhelmingly powerful against ordinary arena contestants. She also displays trust in Moyu by immediately following his advice about her registration.
  • Other contestants: The fighters initially mock Moyu and Menchi as inexperienced children, but their attitudes change to shock and respect after witnessing the pair’s one-sided victories.

Significant Themes

  • Appearance versus reality: Moyu and Menchi look like children and are dismissed because of their age, but both defeat supposedly experienced adult fighters with ease.
  • Different standards of strength: Menchi values lethal practicality and survival instincts, while Moyu recognizes technical value even in imperfect fighting styles.
  • Fame, money, and spectacle: Heavens Arena is portrayed as a commercialized fighting institution where contestants seek wealth, recognition, and advancement before enormous audiences.
  • Identity and deception: Moyu’s use of the name “Illumi” highlights his willingness to manipulate appearances and conceal his true identity.
  • Underestimation: The chapter repeatedly shows arrogant fighters misjudging opponents based on appearance, with disastrous results.

Character Interactions

  • Menchi repeatedly relies on Moyu for guidance, first about registration and later about interpreting their different advancement levels.
  • Moyu calmly instructs Menchi but allows her to act independently, reflecting their master-and-student relationship.
  • Menchi’s registration comment provokes ridicule from nearby contestants, who expect to defeat her easily.
  • Contestant 3142 taunts Menchi and attacks her with confidence, only to be defeated instantly.
  • Moyu and Menchi acknowledge each other’s victories from the stands, then follow separate routes upward.
  • The chapter closes with an unknown silver-haired child reacting to Moyu’s alias, suggesting that Moyu’s use of “Illumi” may attract attention from someone who knows that name.

Ch. 187Killua's Difficult Struggle

Chapter Summary: “Killua’s Difficult Struggle”

Plot and events

Killua hears someone being called “Illumi” at Heavens Arena and investigates, only to discover that the person is Moyu, who is using Illumi’s name as a competitor alias. Killua observes that Moyu has just reached the 60th floor but is treated with fear by the other contestants. Moyu collects his prize money without checking the amount, while Killua eagerly cashes out because he is nearly out of money and struggling to afford food.
Moyu notices Killua’s bruised face and realizes that the six-year-old has been badly beaten due to his lack of combat experience. He reflects that Killua was deliberately sent to Heavens Arena by the Zoldyck family to gain practical fighting experience before beginning assassination work under Illumi’s supervision. Moyu predicts that Killua will need roughly two years to reach the 200th floor. He then takes the elevator to the 100th floor, where he meets the elevator attendant Emma Serves. After a brief, polite exchange, he reunites with Menchi.

Character development

Killua is portrayed as talented but inexperienced. Despite his confidence and exceptional upbringing, he has suffered serious injuries in actual combat and is primarily focused on surviving and obtaining prize money. His curiosity about “Illumi” also shows his alertness and instinct to investigate anything connected to his family.
Moyu appears calm, observant, and intimidating to other contestants. He quickly assesses Killua’s condition and understands the purpose behind the Zoldyck family’s harsh training plan. His courteous interaction with Emma also reveals a more relaxed and socially confident side.
Menchi remains playful and teasing, joking that Moyu has already charmed Emma, while Moyu responds with exasperation.

Significant themes

The chapter emphasizes the difference between natural ability and real combat experience. Killua’s elite training and pain tolerance cannot fully compensate for his lack of experience against unpredictable opponents. It also highlights the control exerted by the Zoldyck family, which has already mapped out Killua’s future as an assassin. Other themes include survival, financial hardship, reputation, and the intimidating power suggested by Moyu’s alias and the fear he inspires in other fighters.

Character interactions

Killua observes Moyu from a distance but does not directly engage with him. Moyu notices Killua’s injuries but likewise keeps his distance. Moyu exchanges polite words with Emma Serves, who demonstrates professional familiarity with prominent contestants. Afterward, Menchi teases Moyu about flirting with Emma, prompting him to flick her forehead in mock annoyance.

Ch. 188To the Future Hisoka

Key plot points and events

  • Menchi wins her preliminary match decisively and is sent straight to Heavens Arena’s 100th floor, while Moyu advances only to the 60th. She gets a private room and enjoys the view.
  • Moyu calculates that he can earn substantial prize money by climbing to the 200th floor, withdrawing his registration, and starting over. Since contestants may register twice, he hopes to collect the floor rewards twice.
  • Menchi notices Moyu’s calculating expression and compares it to the way he used to look at her when he was exploiting her for rewards. Moyu reassures her that she is irreplaceable as his first disciple, then leaves.
  • Moyu creates a Shadow Clone disguised as Hisoka Benso and registers it at Heavens Arena, intending to collect prize money under Hisoka’s name as well. He jokes that a future Hisoka may be turned away.
  • To keep the impersonator from rising too quickly and drawing attention, Moyu invents a persona for him: a battered but unyielding fighter who repeatedly climbs back toward the 200th floor.

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu reveals his opportunistic, profit-focused side, but Menchi’s reminder that he once treated her similarly makes him feel a rare pang of guilt. He tries to reassure her with sincere affection, though he still hurries off to pursue another scheme.
  • Menchi is initially excited by her new room, then becomes uneasy at Moyu’s familiar “predatory” look. She is moved by his reassurance but remains wry about his tendency to charm and manipulate people.
  • Moyu and Menchi share a teasing but affectionate exchange that highlights both Moyu’s past behavior toward her and the bond they have developed.
  • Moyu and Hisoka Benso interact indirectly: Moyu controls the clone and plans its public image while hiding nearby.

Significant themes

  • Ambition and exploitation: Moyu treats Heavens Arena’s rules as an opportunity to maximize rewards.
  • Affection and guilt: His relationship with Menchi complicates his calculating nature, prompting him to acknowledge her importance.
  • Identity and performance: Moyu uses a false identity and carefully crafted fighting persona to influence how others perceive his proxy.
  • Persistence as spectacle: The “never-give-up” fighter image turns repeated defeat and recovery into a deliberate public story.

Ch. 189Killua: I Absolutely Can't Lose!

Chapter Summary: “Killua: I Absolutely Can’t Lose!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Moyu plans to use his Hisoka persona, Hisoka Benso, to advance through Heavens Arena slowly while maintaining a convincing public image.
  • In the preliminary match, Hisoka faces the heavily built contestant No. 5211. He deliberately absorbs attacks and appears weak, eventually winning only at the last moment with a punch to his opponent’s chin.
  • Although the victory leaves him badly injured, Hisoka advances to the 20th floor. The referee is initially disappointed by his performance but becomes impressed by his endurance and determination.
  • Moyu uses the opportunity to create the impression that Hisoka is a tough but limited fighter. Hisoka then wins another match and reaches the 30th floor.
  • Moyu cancels the transformation and returns to Menchi’s room. He explains that fighters rise ten floors after a win and fall ten floors after a loss.
  • Menchi decides to wait until Moyu reaches the 100th floor before fighting herself, choosing instead to train.
  • The following day, Moyu and Menchi go to the 60th-floor waiting room, where Moyu notices a very young contestant: Killua.
  • Killua is treated with contempt by the older contestants because they are embarrassed to share a floor with such a young child. He remains bored and unconcerned.
  • Killua is then matched against “Illumi,” Moyu’s identity at the arena. Killua becomes determined to win because he has already spent his prize money on candy. A loss would send him back to the 50th floor and leave him without money for food.

Character Developments

  • Moyu: Demonstrates careful strategic planning. He intentionally makes Hisoka appear vulnerable and uses a slow advancement strategy rather than rushing to the 200th floor. He also maintains separate identities and manages his progress to maximize the usefulness of his disguise.
  • Hisoka Benso persona: Establishes an image of extreme toughness and perseverance. His victory is not technically dominant, but his willingness to endure punishment makes a strong impression on the referee and spectators.
  • Menchi: Shows concern for Moyu and interest in his matches. Her decision to train while waiting for him reflects discipline and trust in his plan, though she still insists on watching his next fight.
  • Killua: Is introduced as a remarkably young but confident fighter. Despite being underestimated and surrounded by hostile adults, he remains composed. His immediate motivation is practical—he needs money for food—but his declaration that he “absolutely can’t lose” reveals determination and pride.
  • The referee and spectators: The referee’s opinion of Hisoka changes from hopeful expectation to doubt, then to reluctant admiration after witnessing Hisoka’s resilience.

Significant Themes

  • Endurance versus apparent strength: Hisoka’s victory shows that survival and determination can matter as much as overwhelming power.
  • Deception and performance: Moyu carefully constructs Hisoka’s public image, demonstrating how appearances and reputation can be manipulated in a competitive environment.
  • Youth confronting prejudice: Killua’s presence exposes the older contestants’ insecurity and arrogance, while his calm behavior shows that age does not determine ability.
  • Economic survival: The arena is not only a place for combat but also a source of income. Killua’s desperation to win highlights how prize money affects fighters’ decisions.
  • Patience and long-term strategy: Moyu deliberately slows his progress, choosing controlled advancement over speed in order to preserve his plan and gain greater benefits.

Character Interactions

  • Hisoka’s calm response to No. 5211’s insults contrasts with the opponent’s aggression and helps reinforce Hisoka’s carefully crafted persona.
  • The referee observes Hisoka’s performance and develops respect for his perseverance, even while doubting his potential.
  • Moyu and Menchi discuss the arena’s ranking system, with Menchi agreeing to train until Moyu reaches the 100th floor.
  • Menchi reacts with surprise to Killua’s young age, while the other contestants openly look down on him.
  • Killua notices Moyu and later learns that he will fight “Illumi,” setting up the chapter’s central conflict and the next match.

Ch. 190Keep Trying Next Time

Chapter Summary: “Keep Trying Next Time”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Moyu arrives alone at the 66th-floor arena of Heavens Arena, where the stands are packed with spectators. The chapter emphasizes the Arena’s enormous popularity and the financial appeal of both prize money and betting.
  • Killua enters as Moyu’s opponent. Before the match, Moyu considers whether defeating Killua could earn him a reward from his Perception ability, but concludes that the fight lacks the necessary danger and difficulty.
  • Moyu instead begins considering whether to form a deeper relationship with Killua, possibly taking him as a disciple. He also wonders if he could learn Zoldyck techniques such as Rhythm Echo from him, continuing his habit of gaining abilities through his relationships with others.
  • The arena broadcasts footage of both fighters’ previous victories. Moyu’s wins appear cleaner and more decisive, causing the audience to overwhelmingly favor him in the betting.
  • Offended by the one-sided odds, Killua vows to defeat Moyu so badly that Moyu will lose money.
  • At the start of the fight, Killua uses his newly developed tactic: he rushes forward, abruptly changes direction, disappears from Moyu’s field of vision, and attacks from behind.
  • Moyu reacts instantly, crouching beneath Killua’s hand strike, grabbing him by the collar, and pulling him into position for a precise counterattack.
  • Moyu knocks Killua unconscious with a single chop to the back of the neck. He tells him, “Keep trying next time.”
  • The referee declares Moyu, under the name “Illumi,” the winner. The crowd erupts in approval, while Menchi pities Killua’s defeat.
  • Tsubone watches from the stands, and the chapter ends with an amusing suggestion that Moyu may someday write a side story involving himself and Piyon.

Character Developments

  • Moyu: Demonstrates overwhelming speed, reflexes, and combat awareness. He remains calm and analytical throughout the match, treating Killua’s defeat not only as a victory but also as a possible opportunity to establish a teacher-student relationship and acquire new knowledge.
  • Killua: Shows significant tactical growth by developing a deceptive footwork strategy based on sudden braking and changes in direction. Although the tactic fails against Moyu, his determination remains strong; he resolves to defeat Moyu in the future. His childish concern about not having money for food adds humor to the defeat.
  • Menchi: Continues to view Moyu as overwhelmingly powerful and sympathizes with opponents who face him. Her thoughts also highlight the ironic imbalance in her relationship with Moyu, since he often learns or benefits more from her than she does from him.
  • Tsubone: Quietly observes the match, suggesting that the Zoldyck Family remains interested in Killua’s activities and Moyu’s influence over him.

Significant Themes

  • The gap between talent and experience: Killua possesses exceptional skill and creativity, but Moyu’s greater combat experience and perception allow him to neutralize Killua’s best tactic instantly.
  • Growth through failure: Killua’s defeat does not discourage him; instead, it strengthens his resolve to improve and challenge Moyu again.
  • Spectacle and commercialization: The crowded arena, betting system, and audience reactions show how combat in Heavens Arena functions as both sport and entertainment.
  • Moyu’s opportunistic learning: Moyu constantly seeks ways to turn relationships and battles into opportunities for personal growth, even considering taking Killua as a disciple partly to learn from him.
  • Humor amid serious combat: The brutal speed of the fight contrasts with Moyu’s casual remark and Killua’s final worry about going hungry.

Character Interactions

  • Moyu and Killua face each other as respectful but sharply mismatched opponents. Killua attacks with confidence, while Moyu responds with effortless superiority.
  • Moyu’s final words, “Keep trying next time,” are both dismissive and faintly encouraging, planting the possibility of a future rematch.
  • Menchi’s reaction reinforces her admiration for Moyu and sympathy for Killua.
  • Tsubone’s silent observation hints at the Zoldyck Family’s ongoing attention to Killua’s development and Moyu’s role in it.

Ch. 191So This Is How Bad It Gets...

Plot points

  • Killua’s first defeat on the 60th floor comes against Moyu, posing as Illumi. Moyu knocks him out with a restrained blow, then continues winning quickly against other opponents and advances toward the 80th floor.
  • Tsubone watches from the shadows, recognizing that Moyu showed unusual restraint. She worries the loss may discourage Killua or make him challenge an opponent far beyond his current ability.
  • Killua quickly wins his next match and returns to the 60th floor, confirming that his usual tactic still works. Hungry and without prize money, he vows to beat Moyu next time.
  • After a day of Ren training, Moyu takes the exhausted Menchi out to find food. They encounter Killua performing brick-breaking tricks for a sparse crowd in hopes of earning coins.
  • Moyu drops his unopened winnings into Killua’s collection tin and praises him. Killua is mortified by the unexpected generosity.

Character developments and interactions

  • Killua remains determined and proud: he accepts that Moyu is strong but treats the loss as a challenge to avenge. His hunger and public performance reveal how badly the defeat has left him off.
  • Moyu is shown to be both formidable and considerate. He wins efficiently, spares Killua unnecessary harm, and later helps him without making a fuss.
  • Tsubone respects Moyu’s restraint but remains concerned about Killua’s progress and morale.
  • Menchi is eager to join Moyu even when exhausted, and bluntly calls Killua’s situation sad. Moyu looks after her by taking her out for food rather than asking her to cook.
  • The chapter’s central interaction shifts from a humiliating defeat in the ring to a gentler, awkward encounter on the street, where Moyu’s kindness leaves Killua embarrassed.

Significant themes

  • Luck, limits, and growth: Killua’s loss is framed as exceptionally bad luck, but it also exposes the gap between his developing skills and a Nen user’s power.
  • Persistence and pride: Killua’s resolve to improve survives his defeat, even as practical hardship—especially hunger—complicates his ambition.
  • Compassion within competition: Heavens Arena rewards ruthless victory, making Moyu’s restraint and later generosity stand out.

Ch. 192I'm Not Hungry

Chapter Summary: “I’m Not Hungry”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Moyu recognizes him, places a large envelope—presumably containing Heavens Arena prize money—into Killua’s donation tin, and jokingly praises his brick-breaking ability.
  • Moyu leaves with Menchi to find dinner, while Killua angrily rejects the money and tries to return it.
  • Killua follows them to a crowded restaurant, where Moyu and Menchi receive special treatment because of Moyu’s fame as a Heavens Arena fighter.
  • The restaurant owner eagerly asks Moyu for an autograph and serves them a large meal.
  • Killua eventually finds them and places the envelope back on the table, insisting that Moyu take it.
  • Moyu argues that the money now belongs to Killua, leading to a humorous exchange in which Killua effectively gives it back to him.
  • Menchi and Killua trade insults over their ages, strength, and Heavens Arena rankings. Menchi nearly attacks after Killua calls her old, but Moyu stops her.
  • Moyu invites Killua to eat with them. Killua claims he is not hungry, but his loudly growling stomach exposes the lie.

Character Developments

  • Moyu: Shows generosity, confidence, and a growing interest in Killua. He treats Killua casually rather than fearfully or condescendingly and deliberately invites him to join the meal, suggesting he wants to understand the child better.
  • Killua: Demonstrates pride, independence, and a strong aversion to charity. Although hungry, he refuses to accept what he sees as pity or undeserved money. His sharp wit and composure appear alongside subtle signs of vulnerability.
  • Menchi: Displays a playful, affectionate side around Moyu, calling him “Master,” but remains hot-tempered and competitive. She quickly becomes enraged by Killua’s teasing, though she immediately obeys Moyu when he reprimands her.
  • Restaurant owner/crowd: Their reactions emphasize Moyu’s rising fame and popularity among Heavens Arena spectators.

Significant Themes

  • Pride versus need: Killua’s refusal to accept money or admit hunger reveals his determination to preserve his dignity despite his poverty and physical need.
  • Kindness and mentorship: Moyu helps Killua without demanding gratitude and offers him food, hinting at a developing mentor-like relationship.
  • Public image and reputation: Moyu’s celebrity status earns him special treatment, while Killua’s street performance shows the contrast between genuine hardship and arena fame.
  • Strength and hierarchy: The argument between Menchi and Killua centers on combat ability and Heavens Arena rankings, highlighting their competitiveness and differing perspectives on strength.
  • Hidden vulnerability: Killua’s tough attitude and sarcasm conceal his hunger and uncertainty, while Menchi’s fierce exterior hides her willingness to submit to Moyu’s guidance.

  • Moyu teases Killua after recognizing him, then quietly supports him financially.
  • Killua tries to reject Moyu’s charity but ends up engaging him in a verbal battle over ownership of the envelope.
  • Menchi and Killua immediately clash, exchanging sarcastic insults about age, skill, and status.
  • Menchi’s threatening aura frightens Killua, but Moyu’s intervention restores order.
  • Moyu’s invitation to share the meal creates a tentative opening for a closer relationship with Killua, despite Killua’s embarrassed insistence that he is “not hungry.”

Ch. 193Killua vs. Menchi

Plot points and events

  • Moyu reflects on Killua’s upbringing: despite brutal assassin training, Killua has retained his independence and is beginning to resist the Zoldyck family’s chosen path. His family has kept him from learning Nen and allowed Illumi to use a controlling needle to steer him toward becoming an assassin.
  • Moyu invites the hungry Killua to help eat a large meal. Killua is reluctant until Menchi boasts that she can finish everything herself; he accepts partly to spite her.
  • The restaurant owner recognizes Killua from his fight and asks for his autograph. Killua signs beneath Illumi’s name, then pointedly notes that Menchi has no signature there either. The owner hesitates to ask her, and Menchi’s angry expression drives him away.
  • Moyu tries to end their teasing and get them to eat. Killua digs in, but is astonished when Moyu rapidly devours the dishes.

Character developments and interactions

  • Killua shows both his vulnerability—he is hungry and short of money—and his playful, sharp-tongued side. He enjoys provoking Menchi and is newly amazed by Moyu’s appetite.
  • Menchi struggles to restrain her temper because she wants to make a good impression on Moyu. Killua’s jabs wear down her composure and appetite.
  • Moyu treats Killua kindly and mediates between him and Menchi, while his extraordinary eating becomes a surprise to Killua.
  • Killua and Menchi trade barbs, with Killua deliberately exploiting the owner’s admiration to embarrass her.

Significant themes

  • Freedom versus conditioning: Killua’s refusal to embrace the assassin’s life sets him apart from his family, which tries to control his beliefs and prevent him from gaining the power of Nen.
  • Kindness and ordinary connection: Moyu’s invitation offers Killua food without judgment, contrasting with his harsh upbringing.
  • Pride, rivalry, and restraint: Menchi and Killua compete through teasing, while Menchi’s desire to impress Moyu forces her to hold back.

Ch. 194That Person...

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • After dinner at a restaurant near Heavens Arena, Killua realizes that Moyu has eaten nearly all the food while he remains mostly hungry. Menchi, angered by Killua earlier, barely eats.
  • Moyu pays the bill despite the owner’s offer to let him eat for free.
  • While walking through the busy streets, Killua asks about the name “Illumi,” which Moyu had used to register for arena matches.
  • Moyu explains that Illumi was only an alias and that he once fought someone genuinely named Illumi. He reveals that Illumi fled after taking one punch from him.
  • Killua connects this story to an old rumor from his family that Illumi had once been sent flying, confirming that Moyu was responsible for Illumi’s first known defeat.
  • Back at Heavens Arena, Killua returns to his room while Menchi secretly plans to challenge him on the hundredth floor to retaliate for his earlier disrespect.
  • Outside the arena, Tsubone monitors Killua through a surveillance device and transmits the footage to the Zoldyck estate.
  • The chapter ends with the real Illumi watching Moyu’s appearance in the footage and reacting with cold hostility.

Character Developments

  • Killua: Becomes increasingly impressed and intimidated by Moyu after learning that he defeated Illumi. His desire to defeat Moyu weakens, and he becomes more convinced that Moyu is far beyond his current level. He also continues hiding his family background.
  • Moyu: Deliberately uses his victory over Illumi to establish authority in Killua’s eyes. He recognizes Killua’s potential as a disciple but remains cautious about teaching him Nen because of the possible reaction from the Zoldyck Family.
  • Menchi: Grows resentful toward Killua after their argument and decides to pursue a fair fight against him later.
  • Illumi: Learns that Moyu is involved with Killua and reacts with threatening hostility, suggesting that he views Moyu as an obstacle to his plans for his younger brother.
  • Tsubone and the Zoldyck Family: Continue secretly monitoring Killua’s progress at Heavens Arena, with Illumi taking the greatest interest in his development.

Significant Themes

  • Power and reputation: Moyu’s victory over Illumi dramatically changes Killua’s perception of him, showing how reputation influences confidence and relationships.
  • Manipulation and strategy: Moyu carefully controls the conversation to strengthen his position as a possible mentor, while Illumi plans Killua’s future as an assassin.
  • Freedom versus control: Killua’s choices at Heavens Arena are being monitored and potentially directed by the Zoldyck Family, especially Illumi.
  • Hidden identities and secrets: Moyu’s use of the name “Illumi” and Killua’s concealment of his family reveal how personal identities are often treated as tools or weapons.
  • Mentorship and danger: Moyu considers teaching Killua, but doing so could provoke the Zoldycks and place both of them in conflict with Illumi.

Ch. 195Clear Him Out as Soon as Possible

Chapter Summary: “Clear Him Out as Soon as Possible”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Illumi reflects on his previous failed assassination operation in Laxiang City, where he was injured and deceived by Moyu. Although he normally holds no grudges after completing a commission, seeing Moyu interact happily with Killua triggers intense killing intent.
  • Illumi decides that Moyu is a harmful influence on Killua and resolves to eliminate him. He chooses not to inform Hisoka, reasoning that this is a family matter, and plans to finish his current commission before killing Moyu at Heavens Arena.
  • Milluki overhears Illumi’s frightening reaction from outside the surveillance room. He realizes that Illumi is deeply concerned about Killua’s relationship with Moyu and retreats rather than risk provoking him.
  • The following day, Moyu completes his required two matches at the eighty-floor arena. He quickly defeats a weak opponent, then deliberately prolongs a stronger fight to gain combat experience before winning.
  • Moyu advances to the hundredth floor, receives a private room and a one-million-Jenie reward, and summons Hisoka Benso. Hisoka successfully advances to the fiftieth floor after two dramatic battles.
  • Exhausted after training with Menchi throughout the night, Moyu returns to his room to sleep.
  • Killua wins two matches and advances to the eightieth floor. After earning 600,000 Jenie, his first thought is to treat Moyu to dinner rather than spend the money on himself.
  • Killua searches for Moyu throughout the day but cannot find him. His disappointment makes him recognize, perhaps for the first time, what having a friend truly means.

Character Developments

  • Illumi: His normally detached attitude gives way to possessive, violent protectiveness toward Killua. He views friendship as dangerous “pollution” and believes Killua should have no friends.
  • Moyu: Continues efficiently progressing through Heavens Arena while balancing advancement with deliberate combat training. His growing connection with Killua is unknowingly placing him in Illumi’s sights.
  • Killua: Becomes more confident in his fighting ability and shows emotional growth by wanting to share his winnings with Moyu. His frustration at failing to find Moyu reveals how meaningful the new friendship has become.
  • Milluki: Gains a clearer understanding of Illumi’s extreme concern for Killua and wisely avoids interfering.
  • Menchi: Her all-night training session with Moyu leaves her exhausted, demonstrating her demanding attitude toward practice.
  • Hisoka Benso: Continues advancing through the arena, benefiting from Moyu’s support and summons.

Significant Themes

  • Possessiveness versus genuine friendship: Illumi believes relationships inevitably lead to betrayal, while Killua begins discovering friendship as trust, companionship, and generosity.
  • Control and independence: Illumi wants to control Killua’s environment and development, whereas Killua is beginning to form connections outside his family.
  • Growth through combat: Moyu intentionally extends difficult battles to gain experience, while Killua’s victories build both skill and confidence.
  • Emotional awakening: Killua’s desire to treat Moyu and his disappointment at not finding him mark an important step in understanding attachment and friendship.
  • Hidden danger beneath ordinary progress: While Moyu and Killua focus on training and advancement, Illumi is secretly preparing to kill Moyu.

Character Interactions

  • Illumi observes Moyu and Killua together and interprets their friendship as a threat, leading him to target Moyu.
  • Milluki indirectly witnesses Illumi’s reaction but stays away out of fear.
  • Moyu trains with Menchi and supports Hisoka Benso’s advancement through the arena.
  • Killua tries to find Moyu so he can celebrate his success and share his prize money, but his search ends in disappointment.

Ch. 196Who Was It?!

Chapter Summary: “Who Was It?!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Killua spends the evening alone in the plaza after failing to find Moyu. Although he has earned 600,000 Jenie, he is disappointed because his real goal was to share his success—and possibly build a friendship—with Moyu.
  • Tsubone observes Killua and realizes that he genuinely wants to see Moyu again. Unlike Illumi, she views Killua’s desire for friendship as a normal and positive part of growing up.
  • Moyu eventually arrives with Menchi. Killua excitedly tells Moyu about his prize money and offers to treat him to dinner. Moyu accepts, while Menchi becomes irritated at having to spend more time with Killua.
  • At a grilled-meat restaurant, Killua confidently orders a large amount of food, believing his winnings will be sufficient. The bill totals 700,000 Jenie, leaving him 100,000 short.
  • Menchi offers to cover the difference, but Killua ignores her and negotiates with the restaurant owner, promising to repay the remaining money the next day. Despite being broke again, he is extremely happy that he was able to treat Moyu.
  • The next day, Killua wins two matches and reaches the 100th floor of Heavens Arena. Moyu advances to the 120th floor, while Menchi deliberately remains on the 100th floor to increase the likelihood of being matched against Killua.
  • Menchi secretly follows Killua using Zetsu and succeeds in being paired with him.
  • During the match, Killua plans to use Rhythm Echo to confuse Menchi. However, Menchi releases a powerful Ren, overwhelming his concentration and disrupting the technique almost immediately.
  • Menchi exploits the opening and defeats Killua with a single hand strike, knocking him unconscious.
  • Moyu recognizes that Menchi has used excessive force against Killua. Through his shadow-based Double Vision, he also discovers that Tsubone has been secretly monitoring Killua.
  • Tsubone senses that someone is watching her. Unable to identify Moyu, she concludes that the observer must be a highly skilled individual and wonders whether the person may be an enemy of the Zoldyck Family.

Character Developments

  • Killua: Reveals a strong desire for companionship and demonstrates sincere affection for Moyu. His excitement over treating Moyu shows his youthful innocence and unfamiliarity with money and ordinary social relationships. Despite his defeat, he displays strategic thinking by attempting to use Rhythm Echo against Menchi.
  • Moyu: Responds warmly to Killua’s enthusiasm and accepts his invitation without hesitation, encouraging their growing bond. He also remains perceptive and cautious, detecting Tsubone’s presence through Double Vision.
  • Menchi: Becomes increasingly antagonistic toward Killua and deliberately engineers a confrontation with him. Her victory demonstrates her overwhelming combat ability, but her use of Ren against a much weaker opponent highlights her competitiveness and tendency to bully Killua.
  • Tsubone: Shows a protective and understanding attitude toward Killua. She supports his wish to make friends but becomes wary when she detects Moyu’s surveillance.
  • Illumi: Does not appear directly, but Tsubone’s comparison suggests that his approach to Killua is far less emotionally healthy than her own.

Significant Themes

  • Friendship and emotional growth: Killua’s desire to share his winnings with Moyu marks an important step away from his isolated upbringing and toward ordinary human relationships.
  • Childlike innocence versus harsh reality: Killua misunderstands the cost of the meal and is abruptly reminded of practical limitations, while his sincere happiness makes the experience meaningful despite the embarrassment.
  • Power imbalance: Menchi’s effortless victory emphasizes the enormous difference between the two fighters and shows how overwhelming aura can neutralize technical skill.
  • Protection and surveillance: Killua is surrounded by people who either care for him or monitor him, raising questions about whether protection can also become control.
  • Mystery and hidden observers: Moyu secretly watches Tsubone, while Tsubone senses the unseen presence, creating a tense contrast between hunter and guardian.

Character Interactions

  • Tsubone quietly interprets Killua’s loneliness and recognizes his wish to reconnect with Moyu.
  • Killua proudly shares his earnings with Moyu and invites him to dinner, while Moyu responds with praise and acceptance.
  • Menchi repeatedly clashes with Killua, first out of jealousy and irritation at the dinner invitation, then through their deliberately arranged battle.
  • Moyu acts as a supportive mentor-like figure toward Killua but also observes the larger situation from the shadows.
  • Tsubone and Moyu never directly confront each other, yet their mutual awareness creates the chapter’s final suspenseful moment.

Ch. 197Illumi: I Just Happened to Be Nearby

Key plot points and events

  • Tsubone, guarding Killua at Heavens Arena, senses an expert watching her but cannot locate them. She assumes the watcher may be an enemy of the Zoldyck family and a danger to Killua.
  • The watcher is Moyu, whose shadow had been observing Tsubone. After confirming who was protecting Killua, he sends the shadow away and leaves the arena.
  • Moyu confronts Menchi about using Ren against Killua, who is much younger and has not learned Nen. Menchi admits she acted unfairly and let her temper take over.
  • Moyu reflects on how Nen can intensify a person’s nature, and weighs whether Menchi should prioritize self-control or risk following her impulses. He explains both possibilities to her and tells her to practice Ten instead of Ren for now.
  • Five days later, Moyu has reached the 200th floor undefeated and collected his latest prize. He delays registering there, since he has until the end of the day.
  • Illumi arrives in the city, telling Tsubone he has just finished a job and “happens” to be nearby. Tsubone had requested help after failing to identify the watcher.

Character developments and interactions

  • Moyu acts as Menchi’s mentor rather than simply punishing her: he asks her to understand her own mistake, then shares his nuanced view of Nen, temperament, and self-control.
  • Menchi acknowledges her misconduct and recognizes that anger—not just her use of Ren—drove her actions. She accepts Moyu’s direction to focus on Ten.
  • Tsubone remains vigilant and protective of Killua, but her inability to find the watcher leads her to seek backup.
  • Illumi responds to Tsubone’s request, though his claim that he is merely nearby sounds deliberately casual.
  • Moyu and Menchi have a serious but trusting exchange: his sternness gives way to guidance, and she listens without resistance.

Significant themes

  • Power and restraint: Nen can strengthen a person’s existing traits, making self-control important—though Moyu acknowledges that unrestrained instinct might sometimes unlock someone’s potential.
  • Mentorship and individual choice: Moyu sees no single path that suits everyone; he considers Menchi’s temperament before deciding how to guide her.
  • Misunderstanding and hidden motives: Tsubone interprets Moyu’s surveillance as a possible threat, while Moyu’s real purpose is simply to observe.
  • Growth through choices: Moyu suggests that becoming who one is comes from making more sound decisions than poor ones.

Ch. 198This Time, It Was More Than Just a Nen Clone

Chapter Summary

Plot and events

Illumi responds to Tsubone’s request for assistance in investigating the danger surrounding Killua. Tsubone continues secretly monitoring Killua’s matches at Heavens Arena, where he has become stuck at the 150th floor. Although Killua remains talented, the opponents beyond this point are significantly stronger, and he is thoroughly outclassed in his latest match. Despite being badly injured, Killua immediately enters another match instead of resting, suffering because of his impatience and determination to grow stronger.
Moyu observes the battle through his shadow’s Vision Sharing and recognizes that Killua has reached his current limit. He decides not to interfere unless Killua seeks him out, noting that it may take roughly two years for Killua to advance from the 150th to the 200th floor. Moyu also considers whether to begin competing on the 200th floor, especially since Menchi is expected to arrive there soon.
Illumi watches Killua’s struggles from the arena lobby and concludes that Moyu and Menchi have influenced Killua’s behavior. He views this influence as dangerous “contamination” of Killua’s growth environment, regardless of whether it might ultimately benefit him. That evening, Killua prepares to contact Moyu, the only person whose number he has saved. Illumi and Tsubone observe him from hiding. Learning that Killua has only Moyu’s contact information intensifies Illumi’s hostility, and he prepares to confront or eliminate Moyu. Tsubone urges him to remain calm, while Moyu suddenly senses something outside the arena.

Character development

  • Killua: His frustration and insecurity become more apparent. His defeat by a stronger opponent, combined with his memory of Menchi’s overwhelming power, drives him to fight recklessly rather than recover properly. His determination may help him progress faster, but it also leaves him vulnerable to poor judgment.
  • Illumi: His protective instincts become increasingly possessive and extreme. He interprets Killua’s relationships with Moyu and Menchi as harmful interference and reacts especially violently upon discovering that Moyu is the only person in Killua’s phone. His resentment toward Moyu is personal, intensified by Moyu’s past injury to him and use of his name.
  • Tsubone: She remains observant and pragmatic, accepting Illumi’s strength as useful while carefully monitoring his emotional state. She recognizes the danger in his escalating malice and attempts to restrain him.
  • Moyu: He remains detached and strategic, choosing not to interfere in Killua’s development. However, his awareness of the watcher suggests that he is alert to the growing threat from Illumi.

Themes

The chapter explores the difference between guidance and interference, showing how outside influences can both accelerate and endanger a person’s growth. It also emphasizes obsession and possessiveness, particularly through Illumi’s belief that he alone should control Killua’s environment. Killua’s struggle reflects the theme of ambition turning into recklessness, while the hidden surveillance and mounting hostility create a strong sense of impending conflict.

Character interactions

Tsubone and Illumi form an uneasy alliance: she values his abilities but worries about his instability. Killua’s indirect connection with Moyu—shown through his decision to save Moyu’s number—becomes the central source of Illumi’s jealousy and anger. Moyu and Illumi do not directly meet in the chapter, but their past conflict and mutual awareness drive the tension toward an imminent confrontation.

Ch. 199As Expected, It Had to Be Done Soon!

Chapter Summary: “As Expected, It Had to Be Done Soon!”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Illumi discovers that Killua bought a phone because of Moyu and saved Moyu’s number instead of contacting his family. Feeling possessive and threatened, Illumi decides that Moyu must be eliminated soon.
  • Overwhelmed by jealousy and anger, Illumi releases a powerful aura for several seconds. Tsubone warns him that this may alert the mysterious watcher observing them.
  • Tsubone questions Illumi about his claim that Moyu investigated him after their previous encounter. Illumi refuses to explain, prioritizing his plan to deal with Moyu first and the watcher afterward.
  • From Illumi’s reaction and information previously provided by Milluki, Tsubone deduces that Moyu likely knows Illumi’s background and may also know Killua’s identity. However, she considers finding the watcher more important than Illumi’s personal grudge.
  • Moyu arrives after receiving a message from Killua, suspecting that Killua may be under attack. He senses Illumi’s malicious aura and rushes toward Killua’s location.
  • Before Moyu can reach him, ten vacant-looking men block Killua’s path. Killua immediately becomes wary and prepares to defend himself.
  • Moyu activates Ken and notices that roughly thirty nearby pedestrians have also become unnaturally motionless. They turn toward him like puppets, revealing Ball-Headed Needles embedded in their heads.
  • Moyu realizes that the attack is not from an ordinary enemy of the Zoldyck Family, but from someone using needle-controlled people—strongly implying Illumi is behind the ambush.

Character Developments

  • Illumi: His possessiveness toward Killua becomes explicit. Moyu’s influence over Killua triggers intense jealousy, causing Illumi to lose control and expose his hostility. Despite recognizing his mistake, he remains committed to killing Moyu.
  • Tsubone: She remains calm and analytical, carefully piecing together Illumi’s hidden motives and Moyu’s possible knowledge of the Zoldycks. Her priorities differ from Illumi’s: she focuses on identifying the mysterious watcher and protecting Killua.
  • Moyu: He demonstrates sharp Nen awareness and quick judgment. His immediate response to the hostile aura shows concern for Killua, while his use of Ken and recognition of the needles reveal his combat readiness and observational ability.
  • Killua: Though still unaware of Nen, Killua senses danger and maintains vigilance when confronted by the controlled men. His growing connection with Moyu is shown through their exchanged phone numbers and Killua’s decision to contact him.

Significant Themes

  • Possessiveness and control: Illumi views Moyu’s friendship with Killua as something stolen from him, reflecting his obsessive desire to control Killua’s relationships.
  • Family protection versus personal obsession: Tsubone seeks to protect Killua and uncover the larger threat, while Illumi is consumed by his personal hatred of Moyu.
  • Surveillance and hidden knowledge: The mysterious watcher, Moyu’s investigation into Illumi, and the possibility that Moyu knows Killua’s identity create an atmosphere of suspicion and concealed motives.
  • Manipulation and loss of agency: The needle-controlled pedestrians symbolize Illumi’s ability to turn ordinary people into tools, contrasting with Killua’s struggle to act independently of his family’s influence.

Character Interactions

  • Illumi and Tsubone clash indirectly: Tsubone attempts to obtain information and keep the situation under control, while Illumi dismisses her questions and pursues his own agenda.
  • Moyu and Killua are about to reunite after Killua contacts Moyu, but Illumi’s controlled puppets intervene.
  • Moyu’s concern for Killua leads him into the confrontation, while Illumi remains hidden and manipulates the surrounding crowd to isolate and threaten them.

Ch. 200Won't You Pull Out the Needle?

Chapter Summary: “Won’t You Pull Out the Needle?”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • Illumi unexpectedly appears at Heavens Arena, despite Tsubone already being assigned to protect Killua. Moyu concludes that Illumi has come partly because of his personal grudge from their previous encounter.
  • Illumi uses more than thirty innocent civilians as Needle People, controlling them through Ball-Headed Needles and enhancing their strength with Nen.
  • Moyu activates Soul Echo, creating a Shadow Clone from his own shadow to protect his rear and reduce the pressure of the encirclement.
  • Moyu discovers that striking the Ball-Headed Needles can disrupt Illumi’s control. He and the Shadow Clone rapidly defeat the Needle People, though the victims have effectively lost their consciousness and behave like corpses.
  • Illumi observes the battle from a rooftop, studying Moyu’s shadow-based Nen Clone and suspecting that it possesses a hidden special ability.
  • A young girl is used as part of a coordinated attack against Moyu. Although Moyu hesitates briefly at the sight of her, he and the Shadow Clone switch positions, allowing the clone to take the needle attack and defeat the girl and her accomplice.
  • Once all the Needle People are incapacitated, Illumi finally reveals himself instead of attacking from hiding. He points out the Ball-Headed Needle lodged in the Shadow Clone and challenges Moyu to remove it so that he can distinguish the original from the clone.
  • When Moyu looks toward the girl’s body with visible tension, Illumi coldly remarks that Moyu was the one who killed them.

Character Developments

  • Moyu: Demonstrates exceptional combat skill, tactical awareness, and control over his Nen Clone. He remains cautious of Illumi while efficiently dismantling the Needle People. However, his brief hesitation upon seeing the little girl reveals his compassion and discomfort with killing or harming innocents, even when they are being used as weapons.
  • Illumi: Is shown to be vindictive, manipulative, and emotionally detached. Unlike the professional restraint associated with Silva and Zeno, Illumi uses civilians without remorse and carefully studies Moyu’s abilities before engaging him directly. His final statement deliberately attempts to provoke Moyu psychologically.
  • The Shadow Clone: Functions not merely as a duplicate fighter but as an independent tactical asset capable of switching positions with Moyu. It protects Moyu from the girl’s needle attack, though the embedded needle may give Illumi a way to identify or manipulate it.

Significant Themes

  • Professional ethics versus personal obsession: The contrast between Silva and Zeno’s disciplined approach to assassination and Illumi’s personal grudge highlights the danger of allowing emotion to influence a killer’s actions.
  • Manipulation and loss of humanity: Illumi’s victims are stripped of their consciousness and turned into weapons, emphasizing the dehumanizing nature of his Nen ability.
  • Compassion amid violence: Moyu’s hesitation at the sight of the little girl shows that he has not become emotionally numb despite operating in a brutal environment.
  • Psychological warfare: Illumi does more than fight physically; he analyzes Moyu’s abilities and attempts to burden him with guilt over the deaths of the controlled civilians.
  • Identity and deception: The chapter centers on the distinction between Moyu and his Nen Clone, with Illumi seeking to exploit the clone’s visible weakness and determine which body is the real one.

Character Interactions

  • Moyu and Illumi do not directly fight yet, but the entire battle functions as a confrontation between them. Moyu counters Illumi’s controlled civilians while anticipating a hidden attack.
  • Illumi studies Moyu from a rooftop, gathering information about Soul Echo and its shadow-based mechanism.
  • Moyu’s interaction with the little girl exposes his reluctance to harm innocents, while Illumi’s use of her demonstrates his willingness to exploit that hesitation.
  • At the end, Illumi directly taunts Moyu, framing the deaths of the Needle People as Moyu’s responsibility and setting up a psychological and physical clash.
