Background / History

Makarov is Fairy Tail's Third President and a mage recognized among the Ten Wizard Saints. Before the story's main events, he brought Natsu to the orphanage jointly supported by several mage guilds, including Fairy Tail; he also personally brought Ul there in the past. 2 9

When Ul learned magic and applied to Fairy Tail, Makarov verified his ability, formally welcomed him, and had the guild mark placed on his chest. He continued to oversee Ul's progress, promoting him from D-rank to C-rank after his sustained completion of D-rank jobs. 9 16

After Ul destroyed Mount Palipali, Makarov negotiated with the Magic Council to prevent a conviction. His stated concession—that Fairy Tail would not participate in the next Ten Wizard Saints selection—was not actually a condition Fairy Tail had established. 207

Makarov's health sharply deteriorated during Laxus's revolt and the Phantom Lord conflict. Emotional strain and a lack of medication caused him to collapse during the Thunder Palace crisis, and Porlyusica later delivered grave news regarding his condition. 337 345 After regaining consciousness, he immediately asked after the guild's members and accepted responsibility for compensating Magnolia's residents for Fairy Tail's destruction. 349 350

On Tenrou Island, Makarov confronted his former master Precht after Precht became hostile in pursuit of the “abyss of magic.” He formally ordered Precht to leave Fairy Tail's Sacred Land before fighting him alongside the guild. 396 398

During the period in which Fairy Tail's leaders were absent, Ul served as Acting Guild Master. Makarov later resumed the position after Gildarts briefly succeeded him but abandoned the role after roughly a month. 413 495

When Tartaros targeted Jellal's sealing magic circle, Makarov activated the Guild Summoning Order and mobilized Fairy Tail against the dark guild. After Tartaros's defeat, he personally escorted the captured Nine Demon Gates to the Magic Council with Ul and Gildarts. 488 493 494
