Bloodline Hierarchy
Dragon society distinguishes dragons from creatures carrying dragon blood 180.
| Classification | Description |
|---|---|
| Dragon | The offspring of two dragons remain dragons 180. |
| Dragon Heir | A non-dragon descendant with sufficiently pure dragon blood to be recognized as a dragon’s child 180. |
| Dragon Kin | Dragonblood Creatures classified by bloodline concentration; creatures granted origin dragon blood also fall into this category 180. |
| Dragon Servant | A creature with a very thin dragon bloodline, including one granted ordinary dragon blood 180. |
Dragon blood can also enter a lineage through prolonged exposure to a dragon’s power, consumption of dragon blood, or reproduction between dragons and other creatures 180. Purifying a Dragonblood Creature’s bloodline can raise its growth potential; two Frost Dragonkin evolved into Frost Dragons after absorbing Frost Dragon origin blood 368 375.
Growth and Abilities
- Inherited memories — Dragon hatchlings carry knowledge that reduces their need for parental instruction. Medivh’s dragon children became independent shortly after hatching 296 317.
- Elemental powers — These vary by lineage. Blue Dragons specialize in lightning and secondarily in wind; Azure Wave Dragons specialize in water and secondarily in wind. Veledra, born of both lineages, wields lightning, water, and wind 184.
- Bloodline suppression — Dragons can counter Dragonblood Creatures through the superiority of their bloodlines; Sindasa believed this would help him fight Dragon-Blood Lizardmen 202.
- Transformation — Sindasa can take human form through a dragon transformation technique and gives Medivh an inheritance scroll containing the Dragon Transformation Art 179 180.
- Physical strength — Dragons’ size and physique contribute substantially to their combat power 584.
Dragon Clans and Revival
The Dragon-Breath Wilderness on the Blackstone Plane once housed several dragon clans. After the Necrotic Scourge, Ragnarok, and the War of Ten Thousand Races, only the Red Dragon Clan remained there as a pure-blooded clan; the others survived as mixed-blood Dragon Kin or ancestral remains 241 354.
Medivh later helped restore lost lineages by purifying Dragonkin bloodlines and resurrecting willing ancestral spirits as Bone Dragons. With the restoration of the Frost Dragon Clan, the wilderness again housed four dragon clans 354 368 369.
- Red Dragons — Preserved their territory in the Dragon-Breath Wilderness and later supplied dragon bones for resurrection 401 476.
- Blue Dragons — Ancestral remains were resurrected as Thunder Bone Dragons during the rebuilding of their clan 354.
- Rock Dragons — Rebuilt with Medivh’s help, including the creation of Rock Bone Dragons 243 369.
- Frost Dragons — Re-established around the Frost Dragon Tomb and Ice Dragon City; Frost Dragonkin sought their blood to purify their own lineages 368 381.
- Gem Dragons — Their plane’s recovery allowed long-dormant eggs to hatch. Some Gem Dragons remained there, while others joined dragon communities on different planes 585 586 587.
Pacts and Relations with the Wrynn Family
- Dragon City-State Pact — A guardianship agreement: a dragon defends the contracted city or territory when it is attacked. Sindasa signs one to become Kurd City’s guardian, and Veledra later becomes a guardian of Dragon Gate Ferry 179 183.
- Partner Pact — Distinct from a guardianship pact and more difficult to obtain. Oriana initially refused one even under threat of death; she eventually agreed after Medivh’s threat to keep her as a blood slave, on the condition that her blood not be used to cultivate others without permission 149 179.
- Resources and blood — Dragons under Wrynn patronage can receive support for guarding territory, while periodic blood donations bring additional compensation. Their blood is used to cultivate Bone Spirits and Dragon Kin 226 230 372.
- Freedom — Enslaving or imprisoning dragons is treated as a serious boundary in relations with their clans; Medivh avoids binding the Frost Dragon hatchlings with slave or partner contracts 204.
