Background / History

Xiao Yan was initially regarded as a genius of the Xiao family. After reaching Two-Star Fighter, he became arrogant and repeatedly challenged Xiao Bai, only to be defeated each time. His cultivation subsequently fell to the third stage of Dou Zhi Li, damaging both his confidence and standing within the clan. Despite this setback, he remained stubbornly determined to grow stronger. 1 2

His inability to cultivate was caused by the ring left to him by his mother. Once the ring was removed, he discovered that it contained the soul of Yao Chen, who had been observing him for years. Yao Chen accepted Xiao Yan as his disciple and resumed guiding his cultivation. 22

Xiao Yan later recovered his cultivation, pursued alchemy under Yao Chen's instruction, and prepared to settle his Three-Year Agreement with Nalan Yanran. His identity as the alchemist Yan Xiao/Bai Xiansheng was eventually exposed during the conflict at Yun Lan Sect. 120 227 229

In Central State, he continued to seek powerful inheritances and flames. Tang Zhen allowed him to remain in Fen Yan Valley after he passed an assessment for the Heavenly Flame Three Mysterious Transformations, a skill Xiao Bai identified as originating from the Xiao family. 316

Xiao Yan is resolute, competitive, and highly motivated by humiliation or challenges. The prospect of facing Nalan Yanran repeatedly drives him to train harder, even when the difference in their strength is daunting. 174

He is also resourceful and opportunistic. When Yao Chen assigns him costly cultivation materials, he tries to borrow money from Yao Chen, Xiao Bai, and Xun Er rather than abandoning the task. 25 He can be playful and provocative, such as when he snatches an enrollment test crystal and antagonizes older Canaan Academy students. 125
