Background
Chongxuan Sheng is a direct-line descendant of the Chongxuan Clan, born into a succession struggle dominated by his cousin Chongxuan Zun. Before Sheng emerged as a contender, Zun had effortlessly outclassed every other talented candidate; Sheng’s opportunity existed largely because clan power-holders needed someone capable of checking Zun’s influence. 179
His father, Chongxuan Futu, was a brilliant Current Era True Lord whose downfall became an unspoken taboo within the family. The consequences of Futu’s choices left Sheng isolated through childhood: he received cold looks, little support, and no explanation for why his branch of the family was treated differently. 379 386 1550 Chongxuan Chuliang, Futu’s brother and the feared Marquis of Dingyuan, was the only elder who openly supported Sheng. 195
The Heavenly Mansion Secret Realm was Sheng’s all-or-nothing bid to establish himself. He exchanged much of his existing resources for leadership of the expedition and used the Great Void Illusion Realm to recruit Jiang Wang from far away, trusting only Jiang and Shi Si enough to bring them into the dangerous contest. Failure in the secret realm would have ended his political prospects. 179
Appearance
Chongxuan Sheng is markedly obese, a trait that affects even the furniture he uses; he travels with specially made oversized chairs. 1550 His large build contrasts sharply with the imposing physical transformation produced when he opened his Inner Palace. 796
- Broad, heavyset frame, often described as grotesquely obese. 1567
- Requires custom-made seating because ordinary chairs cannot accommodate him. 1550
- Can expand into a colossal form through his Inner Palace cultivation. 796
Personality
Sheng is observant, socially adept, and exceptionally calculating. He treats confidence, reputation, commerce, intelligence, and personal relationships as tools that can be arranged toward a desired result. His outward extravagance early in the succession struggle was a deliberate display of momentum meant to convince others that he could contend with Chongxuan Zun. 180
He is willing to use harsh or manipulative methods and admits that he does not naturally prioritize whether others suffer grievances. 1637 However, his attachment to Jiang Wang’s integrity repeatedly restrains his own pragmatism. During the Qi–Xia War, he chose not to massacre civilians or surrendered soldiers because he cared how those actions would affect Jiang Wang. 1966
Though he often presents himself as lazy, flippant, and unbothered, Sheng relentlessly studies cultivation, politics, and military affairs. He carries deep insecurity about his upbringing and his longstanding comparison with Chongxuan Zun, but has steadily converted an overwhelming initial disadvantage into an equal rivalry. 796 1550
Abilities & Skills
Chongxuan Supernatural Power
Sheng possesses the Chongxuan Clan’s hereditary bloodline Supernatural Power, the basis upon which the clan’s Chongxuan Secret Art was developed. 1038
- Acquired the Supernatural Power upon opening his Fifth Palace. 1567
- Claims he can develop it no worse than Chongxuan Zun at the same cultivation level. 1567
- Its adaptable nature suits his extraordinary capacity for calculation and analysis. 1567
- Conceals Chongxuan Clan secret arts when fighting under an assumed identity in the Great Void Illusion Realm. 211
Great Void Illusion Realm Combat
Despite devoting much of his time to family affairs and political maneuvering, Sheng is an accomplished combatant.
- Routinely sparred with Jiang Wang in the Great Void Illusion Realm. 220
- Defeated Jiang Wang repeatedly in same-realm matches and won Merit from him; Jiang Wang had never won it back by the time of Sheng and Shi Si’s wedding. 1644
- Avoids public overexposure of his true methods, preferring to preserve hidden cards. 211 528
Political Strategy and Intelligence
Sheng’s greatest strength is his ability to identify leverage within complex situations and convert it into influence.
- Personally managed businesses, allies, and rival factions because he lacked enough trusted people to delegate to. 220
- Maintains Shadow Guards for confidential work and intelligence collection. 578
- Sent Jiang Wang detailed strategic letters while Jiang was in hiding, including contingency advice for multiple possible outcomes. 1294
- Built influence through the Official Path and the Desheng Trading Firm, forming connections across Great Qi and beyond. 2590
- Uses layered planning, gradual pressure, and coalition-building rather than Chongxuan Zun’s direct, overwhelming approach. 1623 1634
Military Command
During the Qi–Xia War, Sheng demonstrated a talent for psychological warfare, battlefield logistics, and exploiting enemy expectations.
- Captured Ximing City with minimal resistance by intimidating, persuading, and reorganizing surrendered defenders. 1579
- Used Jiang Wang’s reputation for trustworthiness to secure the cooperation of Xia soldiers. 1579
- Correctly predicted that Chongxuan Zun would come to defend Ximing City, turning his cousin’s desire for military merit into a calculable weakness. 1580
- Forced Shou’an City’s surrender through threats, pressure, and a precise reading of its defenders’ morale. 1592
- Led Qi forces through Fengli Prefecture and contributed to the eastern front’s rapid collapse of Xia defenses. 1592 1608
- Coordinated closely with Jiang Wang and used military formations to create openings against stronger enemies. 1615
Relationships
- Jiang Wang — Initially recruited as a retainer for the Heavenly Mansion Secret Realm, but treated by Sheng as a true friend. Sheng values Jiang’s integrity, trusts him in decisive matters, and considers him his closest friend and brother in arms. 180 308 1644
- Yi Shi Si — His longtime armored protector and later wife, the Marchioness of Bowang. She protected Sheng through his isolated youth, while he ensured she could remain emotionally unguarded despite the burdens of noble life. 1644 2046
- Chongxuan Zun — His cousin, rival, and eventual fellow student at Jixia Academy. Their contest for the Chongxuan inheritance contrasts Sheng’s layered strategy with Zun’s direct and overwhelming style. 1550 1634
- Chongxuan Chuliang — His uncle, the Marquis of Dingyuan. Chuliang is Sheng’s clearest familial supporter and was willing to challenge Jiang Mengxiong over the attack on Sheng and Shi Si. 195 548
- Chongxuan Yunbo — His grandfather and the old Marquis of Bowang. Their conversations concerning Chongxuan Futu help Sheng confront his father’s legacy. 379
- Chongxuan Futu — His deceased father, whose political downfall and unresolved choices shaped Sheng’s childhood and place in the clan. 379 386
- Chongxuan Xin — A clan relative Sheng regards as unreliable but useful. After Xin’s failed attempt to act against him, Sheng forgave him and accepted his renewed pledge of loyalty. 182
Story Role / Major Arcs
Heavenly Mansion Secret Realm
Sheng leads the Chongxuan Clan’s expedition into the Heavenly Mansion Secret Realm, asserting his authority to give Jiang Wang one of the clan’s quotas. The expedition is his decisive gamble against Chongxuan Zun’s entrenched advantage. 161 179
“I give the spot to whoever I want.” 161
Succession Struggle in Linzi
After the secret realm, Sheng expands his political base in Linzi while facing Chongxuan Zun’s countermeasures, including the defection of the Treasure Gathering Chamber of Commerce. He hosts banquets, builds alliances, seeks imperial audiences, and leverages his uncle’s status to force recognition from the court and noble houses. 352 362 363 372
His maneuvering helps send Chongxuan Zun to Jixia Academy, but Zun’s later return renews their contest on a larger scale. 370 790
Cultivation and Recovery
Following the conflict surrounding Wang Yiwu and the attack that left him severely wounded, Sheng withdraws from public contention to perfect his Soaring Dragon foundation. He eventually opens his Heavenly Mansion Inner Palace, disproving rumors that his potential had been damaged. 546 796
Qi–Xia War
As commander of Victory Camp, Sheng turns the eastern front into the central arena of his contest with Chongxuan Zun. He captures Ximing City, draws Zun into defending it, takes Shou’an City, pushes through Fengli Prefecture, and exploits Xia’s redeployment of high-level combatants toward the north. 1579 1580 1592 1608
His campaigns show that his greatest battlefield weapon is not personal force, but the ability to make every available resource—including fear, surrender, reputation, and enemy pride—serve his plans. 1579
Marquis of Bowang and Jixia Academy
By the time he is recognized as Marquis of Bowang, Sheng has inherited a hereditary title but chafes at the burden it places on future generations. 1728 Chongxuan Zun later forces him into Jixia Academy, where their rivalry becomes a relationship of tense instruction and competition rather than open succession warfare. 1634
Divine Presence and Later Affairs
Sheng reaches Divine Presence in a controlled breakthrough after confronting a Dragon Palace envoy. Chongxuan Zun acknowledges his new strength and invites him to adapt to the realm at his residence. 2046 He continues to operate as a major political figure, investigator, and strategist, capable of pursuing long-term suspicions for more than a decade before acting. 2880
Notable Quotes

“No need to rush. Even if you don't reach Divine Presence this time, I'll still definitely win.” 1580
Trivia
- Sheng’s oversized chair at Chongxuan Chuliang’s residence is more than twice the width of Jiang Wang’s chair. 1550
- He once described Jiang Wang as a “protagonist from a storyteller’s script,” while casting himself as the scheming villain. 1406
- His military and political style is defined by solving tangled problems through many interconnected arrangements, in direct contrast to Chongxuan Zun’s preference for decisive, direct action. 1634
