Background / History

Zoro operated in the East Blue as the feared Pirate Hunter Zoro. His bounty hunting was inconsistent because of his chronic lack of direction, leaving him dependent on chance encounters and guides such as Yosaku and Johnny. He pursued bounties for food and money while holding fast to his ambition of becoming the World's Greatest Swordsman. 6 7

He encountered Daide Babaya while both pursued the Tulip Pirates. Drawn by Yubashiri, Zoro accepted Daide's wager: if he could break Daide's defense, he would claim the sword; if he lost or drew, he would sail with him. Despite using Three Thousand Worlds, Zoro could not leave a mark on Daide's barrier and joined the crew, retaining Yubashiri. 7 8

As a member of the Big Daddy Pirates, Zoro trained and sparred continually with Daide, seeking to overcome the Barrier-Barrier Fruit's defenses. He fought Kuro at Syrup Village, cut down Sham and battled Buchi, participated in the campaign against the Krieg Pirates, and defeated Gin the Man-Demon in a decisive duel. 9 13 23

Zoro later gained Hana Shu from Mr. 11, giving him three famous blades. He defeated Kuro to become the crew's second-in-command, fought Fish-Men during the assault on Arlong's territory, and continued pursuing stronger swordsmen. 16 19 28 45

Appearance

Zoro is a muscular, green-haired swordsman. He was seen training shirtless on a sailboat and is described as 178 centimeters tall. 6 11

  • Green hair.
  • Muscular build.
  • Uses a bandana when becoming serious in battle.

Personality

Zoro is intensely single-minded about swordsmanship. He measures himself against strong opponents, seeks difficult battles, and views becoming the World's Greatest Swordsman as a promise he cannot abandon. His inability to cut through Daide's barrier becomes a personal benchmark rather than a reason to retreat. 8 9 13

He is blunt, competitive, and easily provoked by challenges to his rank or strength. His rivalry with Kuro and El Drago is particularly open, though he respects strength wherever he finds it. 19 20

Unlike Daide and Kuro, Zoro does not take interest in killing weak enemies. He prefers opponents worth cutting down and supports Daide's decision to spare the defeated Krieg Pirates. 14 24
