Background / History

Earlier Worlds

Shifu had already crossed through at least thirty-two worlds before the world he later identifies as his thirty-third. He accumulated inheritances, techniques, and combat experience across those journeys, allowing him to grow powerful even when beginning in a new world from scratch. In one earlier world, he helped turn his organization into the largest educational institution there; its students were later wiped out in a crisis after his departure. 459

He has repeatedly acted through unusual states of existence. While guiding Bell Cranel, he could manifest through Bell’s body and describe his condition as comparable to a transformation ability; Bell later met him directly within his mental world. 152 165 Shifu taught Bell to actively use Qi through techniques such as the Golden Light Mantra and Lightning Method. 210

Soul Society and Pirate World

After graduating his students and the Arrancar following Yhwach’s defeat, Shifu departed the Soul Society. His Zanpakutō transformed into a ball-like entity as he left for another world. 301

He next appeared as a soul residing in Monkey D. Luffy’s body, introducing himself as Luffy’s Master and immediately correcting Luffy’s training. 301 He also offered Roronoa Zoro more efficient physical conditioning, Haki development, and swordsmanship training. 304 During this journey, he demonstrated advanced swordsmanship against Mihawk, guided Brook in exploiting the Revive-Revive Fruit’s spiritual properties, and used overwhelming Conqueror’s Haki to restrain Garp, Sengoku, and the Admirals at Marineford. 313 386 400

Clover Kingdom

Shifu entered the Clover Kingdom in a normal human body and received a one-page grimoire. Recognizing Asta’s potential despite his lack of magic power, he became Asta’s master and taught him how to wield the Demon-Slayer Sword. 401 402

He and Asta joined the Black Bulls, where Shifu became the squad’s primary trainer with Yami Sukehiro’s approval. He improved members’ fundamentals, magical control, recovery, and combat methods while repeatedly supporting the squad against the Eye of the Midnight Sun, the elves, devils, and the Spade Kingdom. 405 425 444 455

Following the defeat of Lucius Zogratis, Shifu created an independent body for Julius, sealed Lucius with a delayed destructive seal, and transferred his power to Asta and Yuno before leaving the world. 472

Jujutsu World

Shifu was reborn in a middle-school classroom as a cursed spirit formed from students’ resentment toward teachers who ignored bullying and persecution. His occupation of the body caused it to resemble his human appearance rather than its intended monstrous form. 473

After a spar with Gojo Satoru, Shifu joined Jujutsu High as an instructor. He taught Gojo, Suguru Geto, Shoko Ieiri, Kento Nanami, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and other students; he also altered or customized several students’ techniques. 474 476 478 494 508

During the Shibuya Incident, Shifu identified Kenjaku’s objective and warned Yuji that he could be forced to consume most of Sukuna’s Fingers. 516 He later extracted Sukuna from Yuji, transformed Sukuna’s former body into a viable cursed-spirit vessel, and ultimately chose to leave this world as well. 522 524

Appearance

Shifu’s appearance changes with the body or form he occupies. He generally presents as a calm young man, though he states that he is far older than he looks. 420 492

Despite his detached wording, Shifu is protective and considerate. He prepares meals and medicinal baths for the Black Bulls, shields Asta during his tribunal, offers Riko Amanai a choice beyond her expected fate, and reassures Ijichi that he will not allow civilians to die in Shibuya. 406 452 484 516
