Background

Tang San arrives in Suotuo City with Xiao Wu to enroll at Shrek Academy on their teacher’s recommendation. Before reaching the academy, the pair intervene in an apparent debt dispute that proves to be a staged honey trap. Dai Mubai rescues them after the disguised victim attacks Xiao Wu with a poisoned dagger. The incident teaches Tang San to be more cautious of strangers and deceptive appearances. 32 33

Dai Mubai’s strength—four rings at an age only a few years above Tang San’s—shakes Tang San’s confidence in his own talent. Having been regarded as a genius in Nuoding City, he realizes that the wider Soul Master world is far more competitive and becomes determined to improve. 33

At Shrek, Tang San’s understanding of Soul Master theory is further challenged when Xiao Qing reveals three thousand-year soul rings and three contracted thousand-year soul beasts. Tang San later joins Xiao Wu, Zhu Zhuqing, and Ning Rongrong in the entrance assessment against Xiao Qing, acting as the team’s control core and tactician. Though his plan briefly restrains Xiao Qing, he is deceived by a decoy and eliminated from the field. 36 37 38

Personality

Tang San is protective, measured, and strongly loyal to Xiao Wu. When she regrets nearly endangering them through kindness, he reassures her that compassion is not a fault and silently resolves to protect her. 33

He is highly self-reflective. Encounters with stronger peers and defeats do not break his resolve; instead, they create urgency to cultivate and improve. 33 34 39

Tang San can also be secretive when protecting those close to him. After Xiao Wu’s connection to the Titan Giant Ape raises suspicion, he gives the group a false explanation that she was mentally controlled by the beast, despite recognizing that his account is uncertain. 52

When Tang Hao appears to repel the Titan Giant Ape, Xiao Wu disappears in the resulting chaos. Tang San becomes frantic and self-reproachful, then rescues her after Zhao Wuji and Xiao Qing lure the beast away. 46 47 49 50

Protecting Xiao Wu’s Secret

After returning from the forest, Tang San claims that the Titan Giant Ape mentally controlled Xiao Wu. Xiao Qing and Zhao Wuji recognize inconsistencies in the story but remain silent to preserve the team’s unity. 52
