Background / History
Yan Kai had studied under Li Heshan for roughly half a year when Shi Wen arrived at the Fist Academy. Though still young, he had already entered the Inner Courtyard and become a Blood-Tempering Realm martial artist. His affluent family background gave him access to far better clothing, food, medicinal resources, and business connections than most disciples possessed. 2 3
His family operates the Yan Family Chamber of Commerce, and Yan Kai treats his martial status as a way to recruit capable fighters for the family enterprise. He has sponsored several disciples, including Wei Shan, and many Inner Courtyard disciples hold paid positions with the chamber. 5 33
Yan Kai first met Shi Wen when the latter sought an apprenticeship. Seeing Shi Wen could not cover the full nine-guan tuition, Yan Kai supplied the remaining two guan and personally taught him the Baji Fist Introductory Foundation for two days. Li Qianqian later revealed that Yan Kai had repeatedly spent money assisting disadvantaged juniors. 2
Shi Wen eventually repaid the loan, becoming the first recipient of Yan Kai's aid to do so. Yan Kai subsequently helped Shi Wen obtain Stone Raw Meat, Blood-Nourishing Paste, Red Python Meat, and Blood Strengthening Powder through his family's channels. 6 9
Appearance
Yan Kai is a young man of about seventeen whose wealthy upbringing is immediately apparent from his martial attire. 2
- Fine cotton martial arts tunic with brocade-trimmed collar and cuffs. 2
- Cinched shorts, soft-soled leather boots, and a brocade belt. 2
- Leather wrist bracers, knee pads, and a forehead headband. 2

Personality
Yan Kai is sociable, approachable, and habitually generous. He speaks informally to Shi Wen, refuses to let the junior feel indebted over the tuition loan, and repeatedly tries to help him gain resources or employment. 2 6 10
His kindness is not limited to Shi Wen; Li Qianqian states that he had assisted many struggling disciples during his first half-year at the academy. However, this habit also brings criticism from fellow disciples who consider his aid wasteful or improper. 2 10
Alongside his goodwill, Yan Kai is commercially minded. He recruits promising martial artists for the Yan Family Chamber of Commerce, supplies cultivation materials at preferential prices, and remains aware that favorable deals cannot be extended indefinitely. 9 33
