Background / History
Founding Clan and Political Isolation
The Uchiha are one of Konoha’s founding families, with Uchiha Madara identified as a village founder. Despite that position, they remain outside Konoha’s political center for so long that Senju Tobirama eventually agrees that an Uchiha becoming Hokage is necessary for genuine integration 8 23 41.
At the beginning of the story, it is Konoha Year 52, six months after the Nine-Tails Incident. The clan is forbidden from leaving the village. Witnesses having seen the Sharingan in the Nine-Tails’ eyes fuels suspicion from Konoha’s leadership and distrust among villagers 1 2.
Fugaku calls a meeting to discuss the clan’s future, but advocates of integration and radical resistance nearly come to blows. Yan’s proposal to overthrow the Third Hokage excites the radicals, while his alternative of complete submission also meets opposition 2 3.
The Casino Plan
Yan proposes using gambling’s emotional highs and lows to awaken the Sharingan. His experiment assigns clansmen unequal casino credit limits and requires participants to spend at least six hours there daily, deliberately creating differences in wealth and status 4 10.
The awakenings increase Yan’s prestige and persuade Fugaku to provide further funding. However, addiction, jealousy, family conflict, and discrimination against those without awakened eyes spread through the clan. Its civilian economy approaches collapse, and repeated bloodshed requires intervention by clan personnel and the Military Police Force 12 13 15.
Riot, Autonomy, and New Leadership
Konoha’s leadership approves the clan’s relocation without informing Fugaku beforehand. Hiruzen promises reimbursement but requires the Uchiha to pay the costs initially. Rumors of betrayal, followed by Xiuren’s announced defection to the Hokage faction, trigger a riot; Yan has secretly instructed Xiuren shortly before the announcement 16 17.
More than a thousand ordinary clansmen leave the compound in groups accompanied by ninja. Under orders not to kill, they forcibly search homes, smash property, beat residents, and seize villagers. More than two hundred captives are reported during the confrontation 18 19.
Yan negotiates autonomous rights over a region of Konoha and returns with the agreement. The elders apologize, Fugaku accepts the leadership change, and the clan recognizes Yan as its new head 22 23.
Special Zone Development and the “God-Making Plan”
Yan develops the Uchiha Special Zone through cooperation with the Ninja Cat Clan, commercial investment, and recruitment. He invites other ninja clans into a Commercial Street project and recruits Yakushi Nonō to improve medical services while offering to relocate and fund her orphanage 25 27 28 32.
His God-Making Plan culminates in a shared black-and-white Susanoo. By pooling the clan’s ocular power and chakra, then establishing Bloodline Resonance, Yan turns his Susanoo into a power sustained through the clan’s bloodline. He subsequently leads the clansmen against forces gathered at the Special Zone’s boundary 36 37.
Konoha later cooperates with the Uchiha in a public narrative blaming Danzō for the clan’s damaged reputation and the Nine-Tails Incident. This is presented as a change in public opinion, not an independently established account of the incident 60.
War, Territory, and an Uchiha Hokage
The Uchiha Ninja Army defeats Kumogakure forces and captures Thunder-Moon Canyon before the Raikage’s reinforcements arrive. The Special Zone subsequently claims five of the ten leading war-merit positions: four Uchiha members and one military commander 76 78 92.
Yan becomes the Fifth Hokage, fulfilling the clan’s ambition to place one of its own at Konoha’s political center. Territorial rewards then create a choice between clan-managed holdings and independent development. Sora and Tekka surrender their territories for clan management, while two other members leave with relatives and friends, change their names, and establish new ninja clans 93 94 95.
Loyalty During Yan’s Disappearances
After Yan disappears on the Land of Demons expedition, the clan opposes selecting a Sixth Hokage. Its territorial influence and military strength make that opposition difficult to disregard, and Tobirama instead serves as acting Hokage 139.
After more than three years, Fugaku, Shisui, and the Special Zone leadership prepare nearly five thousand ninja to invade the Land of Wind and reach Yan. They disregard Tobirama’s warnings until Yan returns and stops the march. Fugaku explains that their bloodline connection confirmed Yan was alive, but they feared he was trapped 141 142.
Following a later disappearance, Yan remains absent for five years. During this period, the clan follows Tobirama’s orders under Yan’s arrangements rather than continuing its earlier expansion 228.
Fourth Great Ninja War and Reconstruction
Obito, now the Fifth Mizukage, destroys Kumogakure and advances against the Uchiha-controlled forces. Even several Kage-level fighters cannot stop him. Yaoguang keeps the clan fighting through chakra replenishment and healing, but Obito targets the sphere to remove that advantage 228 229.
Fugaku and Tekka create an opening for Shisui to use Kotoamatsukami. Obito ultimately resists, forcing the clan to abandon the Land of Moon and Land of Hot Water and retreat toward the Land of Fire and Land of Rice Fields. Shisui is left severely injured and unconscious, with irreversible damage to his vision 230 231 234.
The clan investigates Yan’s research with Tobirama while facing renewed Kirigakure attacks. Hashirama and Tobirama reinforce its struggling army. After Yan’s return and Obito’s defeat, the Uchiha army massacres the remaining Kirigakure ninja 235 236 240.
The Uchiha subsequently repair Konoha’s damaged buildings and construct facilities including a ninja training center and medical research laboratories. Itachi and Shisui teach the next generation to use the Sharingan responsibly and reject an uncontrolled pursuit of power 243.
Alternate-World Counterpart
During Yan’s journey to another world, he encounters a history in which the Uchiha were exterminated. He explicitly distinguishes that clan from his own, telling Sasuke that the Uchiha in his world survived and that Sasuke’s parents remain alive. Yan declines to retaliate over the other world’s extermination 176 186 191.
Organization and Governance
Traditional Structure
- Clan head and elders: Fugaku presides over meetings from the highest seat, flanked by elders. The Great Elder is among the surviving members born during the Warring States period 2.
- Meeting eligibility: Attendance is restricted to jonin or members possessing a Three-Tomoe Sharingan 1.
- Internal factions: The established groups are the clan head’s faction, conservatives, radicals, and neutrals. Yan’s organization initially threatens to become a separate fifth power 5.
- Military Police connection: The clan’s police personnel can be mobilized alongside other clansmen to contain internal disorder 15.
Special Zone Policies
- Commercial Street: Participating clans receive a reduced tax rate of 30% for two years and access to a Business Alliance for information and resource exchange. Shops failing the zone’s standards can be removed 28.
- Medical and orphan care: Nonō is recruited primarily for medical development. The Special Zone promises land for a larger orphanage and responsibility for its expenses 32.
- Territorial management: Members who transfer rewarded territory to the clan relinquish ownership and management rights in exchange for proportional annual dividends 94.
- Universal Ranking System: Uchiha membership automatically raises an individual’s assigned rank by one level, capped at V3. This is a status benefit, not a demonstrated increase in combat strength 97 98.
Military Growth
The Special Zone’s forces include recruited ninja as well as Uchiha clansmen; army totals are not equivalent to clan population.
| Period | Documented Strength | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Early clan organization | Over 1,000 ninja 5 | Most are genin or chunin; roughly fifty to sixty are jonin, with just over forty possessing Three Tomoe. |
| Before the Thunder-Fire War | Over 3,000 Special Zone soldiers 74 | Private troops obeying the Uchiha leadership, excluding weak genin assigned to public security. |
| Search mobilization | Nearly 5,000 ninja 141 | The army assembled to march out of Konoha in search of Yan. |
| Report after Yan’s return | Over 10,000 forces under clan command 142 | Fugaku attributes the expansion to the effort to locate and rescue Yan. |
Territorial Influence
- Uchiha Special Zone: Autonomous territory within Konoha 22 74.
- External holdings: By Yan’s first prolonged absence, the clan controls the Land of Rice Fields, Land of Hot Water, Land of Moon, and Kumogakure in the Land of Lightning 139.
- Political backing: Nearly one-third of the ten feudal lords within the Land of Fire support the clan during the succession dispute 139.
- Wartime withdrawal: The clan abandons the Land of Moon and Land of Hot Water following Obito’s breakthrough 231.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan develops through intense emotional changes, with additional tomoe associated with greater strength and more comprehensive combat capabilities 1 4.
- Provides clearer vision, attack prediction, and the ability to identify an opponent’s openings 12 236 243.
- Supports genjutsu used to disrupt enemy movements 229 235.
- Higher-form awakening through extreme stimulation places severe pressure on the mind; Itachi warns that it can cause profound mental damage 243.
Mangekyō Sharingan
Documented wielders include Yan, Fugaku, Shisui, and Itachi, though the provided chapters do not establish every member’s awakening date 27 36 230 236 253.
- Kotoamatsukami: Shisui’s technique can rewrite another person’s will, but Obito eventually resists its influence 230 231.
- Ocular strain: Shisui’s overuse leaves him without hope of recovering his vision 234.
- Research goal: Safer Mangekyō awakening for every clansman remains a possibility under investigation, not a completed achievement 243.
Bloodline Resonance and Shared Susanoo
Yan’s Bloodline Resonance Jutsu combines Mangekyō ocular techniques, Yin-Yang Release, summoning, and sealing to connect his Susanoo to the clan 36 37.
- Allows Sharingan-awakened ninja to summon miniature black-and-white Susanoo without individually possessing the Mangekyō 37 141.
- Makes the clan’s growing power strengthen Yan’s Susanoo in turn 37.
- Establishes a connection through which the clan can sense that Yan remains alive 142.
- Supports blade- and bow-equipped manifestations used in coordinated battlefield assaults 230.
Coordinated Warfare
The Uchiha army combines formations, ninjutsu squads, and taijutsu squads rather than relying solely on individual ocular power 76 78.
- Taijutsu troops employ the Eight Inner Gates alongside auxiliary equipment 78.
- Fire Release provides large-area offensive pressure, including Tekka’s Gōka Mekkyaku 235.
- Susanoo formations serve as defensive barriers for allied forces 235.
- Discipline and equipment do not eliminate casualties; concentrated attacks can overwhelm armored troops 78.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Chakra Armor: Protective battlefield equipment that can crack under concentrated enemy attacks 78.
- Ninja weapons: Blades, kunai, and shuriken are carried by the Special Zone army 78 141.
- Identity Cards: Cards with interactive light screens display Universal Ranking System levels and receive policy updates 97.
- Yaoguang: A floating support sphere created through cooperation between the Konoha and Special Zone research institutes, incorporating Star Force, the Six Paths Treasure Box, and other treasures. It replenishes chakra, repairs severe injuries, and absorbs dispersed battlefield chakra to sustain itself; it remains vulnerable to Obito’s attacks 229 230.
