Potter's Law
The dragon eggs hatched much faster than Kyle had expected; just a few days after the Easter holidays, he received a letter from Hagrid.
It only had four words written on it, "Almost hatching."
The handwriting was messier than ever before, and crooked too. Kyle was certain that Hagrid's eyes had never left the dragon egg, even while he was writing this note.
If he had just glanced at the parchment, the writing wouldn't be so crooked.
However, it's understandable. After all, raising dragons has always been Hagrid's wish, and now is a crucial time for the dragon eggs to hatch. It's already quite remarkable that he even remembered to write to him.
Kyle quickly ate a few bites of grilled sausage and then hurried to Hagrid's Hut.
"You've come at the right time; it'll be out soon."
Hagrid opened the door and said excitedly, "I was so nervous last night I couldn't sleep a wink."
The egg has been removed from the fireplace and is now on the table, occasionally wobbling a couple of times.
To Kyle's disappointment, however, he did not see any cracks in the dragon egg.
"Judging from the frequency of the shaking, it will probably take another two hours before it hatches," Kyle sighed.
The dragon egg hatched around 10 a. m., when he should still be on the third floor of the castle taking his Transfiguration Class.
If only it had been a day earlier! Yesterday morning was Herbology Class, and the Third Greenhouse they went to was right next to the field. He could have easily taken a look during the break.
But not today.
After Transfiguration Class comes Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Kyle doesn't want to be late if he can.
Back at the castle, Kyle was still thinking about it.
The first three days after Dragon hatches are the best time for them to get along. At this time, the young dragons are like they have just woken up, and their bodies are still adapting. Not only are their aggressive and irritable instincts suppressed to a minimum, but they also have a natural affinity for all the creatures they see.
If you miss this opportunity, it will be much more difficult to build a good relationship with them later.
Looks like I'll have to make a few more trips to Hagrid's place over the next three days.
Of course, gifts are a must. No need to prepare anything special, just some dried meat and dried fish will do.
These are all things that the Norwegian Ridgeback likes, making them perfect for increasing its favorability.
In some ways, raising a dragon and raising a cat are not that different.
During the Transfiguration Class, Kyle listened absentmindedly to Professor McGonagall's words, then raised his wand and transformed the rabbit in front of him into a Winky, exquisite trophy.
"The styling is perfect, and not a single hair was left. If it were a month ago, I would have given you an extra five points..."
Just then, Professor McGonagall's voice suddenly came from the side.
"I understand your determination to win, but I have to remind you that what we're going to be wearing this lesson is slippers... You can't exactly walk around wearing the Quidditch Cup."
"I'm sorry, Professor..."
Kyle blushed and quickly waved his wand again, turning the trophy into a pair of fluffy slippers with cat ears.
Professor McGonagall then showed a satisfied expression.
"Don't let your mind wander during next class."
"Hufflepuff three-pointer."
Finally, noon arrived. As soon as class ended, Kyle quickly left the classroom, intending to first get acquainted with the newborn dragons.
As he passed the entrance to the Great Hall, he also saw Harry and Malfoy.
However, Kyle wasn't surprised. As long as it wasn't during class, you could always find Malfoy near Harry; it was common sense...
They just look a little different today.
Malfoy was standing next to Crabbe and Goyle, laughing loudly and smugly.
Harry looked at them nervously, as if they had been caught red-handed.
Moreover, the two were only focused on each other, and neither noticed Kyle had just walked past them.
Tsk tsk... Malfoy successfully ousted Ron and took his place?
Kyle glanced back at them with some curiosity.
However, ten minutes later, he found out what was going on.
"So, Malfoy also saw the Norwegian Ridgeback?"
"I...I'm not sure," Hagrid said dejectedly. "I only saw him leaning against the window, but I didn't notice when he arrived."
Kyle glanced back at the window Hagrid was pointing to, frowned, and said:
"I think Malfoy probably just saw something on the table, but didn't know it was Dragon."
"Really?" Hagrid asked excitedly.
If Malfoy didn't see it, doesn't that mean he doesn't need to send Norbert away?
"I'm just guessing," Kyle said.
The window wasn't high up, and it was mostly covered by curtains, leaving only a small gap. If someone were standing in front of the table, it would probably block their view.
But it's hard to say exactly how much it could block, since Kyle wasn't there at the time and didn't know Harry and the others' location.
However, as far as he knew, Malfoy never missed any opportunity to cause trouble for Harry. If he had really seen the Dragon, he wouldn't have been in the Great Hall, but rather in Snape's office.
Kyle comforted Hagrid for a few more moments, then took out a small dried fish and went over to tease the newborn dragon.
It's no wonder it's Dragon; although the little guy is only newborn and smaller than a water bottle, its teeth are already very sharp, easily biting the dried fish in half.
"Kyle... are you sure it's okay to feed it this?"
Hagrid asked somewhat nervously, "I remember the book said that it should drink chicken blood brandy at this time, and it shouldn't be fed solid food for another week."
As he spoke, Hagrid pulled out the book he had kept under his pillow, "Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit."
He's been watching this lately; although the content is somewhat outdated, it's very comprehensive, including the complete process of raising Dragon.
"What you're describing are just the standards for artificial breeding. Wild Dragon can't find chicken blood brandy."
Kyle then took out a small dried fish and said, "In fact, for some Dragon, such as the Norwegian Ridgeback or the Hungarian Horntail, they can eat normally after hatching... those sharp teeth aren't just for show."
"Is that so?" Hagrid blinked blankly.
However, seeing how happy Norbert was while eating the dried fish, he decided to believe Kyle's words.
Whether it's brandy or dried fish, as long as it likes it, that's fine.
Soon, the bag of dried fish was empty, and the little guy let out a satisfied burp, spitting out a small cluster of flames from his mouth.
"It seems Norbert likes to eat fish..." Hagrid said happily, "Oh, by the way, you probably don't know this, but I named him Norbert."
