Background / History

Garp found Tsugikuni Yoriichi on Dragon Roar Island while investigating the destruction of a Marine unit and the island's town. Mistaking the boy for a pirate, he knocked him unconscious, then took him aboard his warship. After investigating the attack, Garp pursued the responsible pirate crew and rescued the abducted women and children 4 5.

Garp brought Yoriichi into the Marines and later took him to sea, objecting to the delay in teaching him combat techniques. His pursuit of the Roger Pirates brought his crew into repeated conflict with Roger, including battles in which Garp and Roger fought each other directly 13 14 36 37 119. Garp repeatedly refused promotion to admiral and remained a vice admiral despite his standing within the Marines 13 114.

Years later, Garp joined Marine Headquarters' force on Starting Island to capture Yoriichi, who now led the New Marines. Garp refused to back down during their fight and was killed. His coffin was returned to Marineford, where Luffy attended his funeral 540 542 543 558.

Appearance

Garp is broad and powerfully built, with a rugged face. He had black hair when Yoriichi first met him; his temples had grayed by their later reunion 4 305.

Personality

Garp is informal, headstrong, and willing to defy superiors, but his recklessness does not prevent him from assessing risks. After his crew was injured fighting the Roger Pirates, he ended the pursuit to repair his ship and gather stronger support 14 43. He trains children harshly because he wants them to become capable Marines, while showing concern for their futures 13 307 397.

He protects subordinates against outside interference, confronting CP0 when its agents sought to take Yoriichi 130. Although he fights pirates aggressively, he can judge them by their actions rather than their identity alone: after clashing with Shanks, he let him go in recognition of what had been accomplished in the Kingdom of Goa 306.

Garp fights primarily with Haki-enhanced fists and regards Haki as more important than Devil Fruit powers 4 542.
