Birth and childhood

Luffy was born in the East Blue as Monkey D. Dragon’s son and Garp’s grandson. Garp quietly brought him to Marine Headquarters, where his existence was known to high-ranking Marines but concealed from the lower ranks and the wider world. 281 282

Garp later placed him in Windmill Village rather than raising him at Marine Headquarters, believing that the special treatment Luffy would receive there would undermine his harsh training philosophy. There, Luffy met Shanks and Uta and became captivated by Shanks’ ideals of freedom, adventure, and piracy. 389

Luffy accidentally consumed the fruit kept by the Red-Haired Pirates, believing it was food. Shanks told him it was the Rubber Fruit, explaining that Luffy’s body could stretch but that he would never be able to swim again; Shanks concealed its identity as the Nika Fruit. 477

Marine upbringing
