Background / History
Shen Lang was an orphan taken in by the secret organization code-named Yin Serpent. The organization trained him in martial arts, stealth, disguise, and other criminal techniques. At fifteen, he swallowed one of Yin Serpent's immortal pills, gaining a feathered body capable of flight but suffering severe permanent deformation and dependence on further pills to avoid madness. 142
He became infamous across the Northern Lands as a thief who could penetrate even heavily guarded residences. Rather than stealing wealth, he abducted women and confined them in hidden locations to force them into “play house” scenarios; he later released them without sexually violating them. His conduct nevertheless made him a feared scourge among officials and noble families. 137
Three years before his capture, Shen Lang accepted a duel with the Golden Blade Sect's former leader. The public believed he died after leaping from a snowy cliff during an ambush, but he had arranged the apparent death because he could fly. Shen Lang later claimed that he faked his death to escape the Flame King after someone used his identity in the abduction and assault of Governor Yang's daughter. 137 141
After reappearing, Shen Lang was blamed for the massacre of the Golden Blade Sect leader's household. He denied responsibility, claiming Governor Yang framed him through the use of Corpse-Rot Immortal poison, which had become associated with him. 137 141
Appearance
In human form, Shen Lang appears as an exceptionally handsome young man in white robes, without a visible weapon. He wears a crimson silk sash around his waist. 140
- Has a calm, refined bearing before combat. 140
- His transformed form is a grotesque, nearly human-sized bird-like monster. 140
- Pale white feathers erupt across his body during transformation. 140
- His arms become enormous feathered wings capable of flight. 140
- The transformation is painful and leaves only traces of his former human features. 140
Personality
Shen Lang is secretive, theatrical, and deeply eccentric. His habit of abducting women solely to make them act out domestic or fantastical roles is portrayed as perverse, yet he does not abduct them for lust or murder them indiscriminately. 137
He initially presents himself as composed and even regretful about violence, warning Lu Chen to stop investigating rather than immediately trying to kill him. Once overwhelmed, however, his calm facade breaks into panic and desperation; he attempts to escape, tries to kill Lu Chen in a mutual fall, and ultimately gives up sensitive information to survive. 140 141
Despite using A-Yuan as leverage against Yan Ke, Shen Lang states that he kept the child alive and unharmed, refusing to harm a child. 141 142
