Prophecies and first contact

Tianyan first becomes known through Ran Qingmo, to whom she reveals predictions concerning the Sword Sect’s destruction and Emperor Jiajing’s death. She disappears while Ran Qingmo is cultivating, leaving Xu Yuan to identify her art as the Heaven Derivation Art, a technique capable of deriving heaven’s secrets. 88

Xu Yuan later encounters Tianyan in the form of a small, golden-eyed girl. Her childlike appearance contrasts with the divine bearing in her gaze and the overwhelming threat she presents; Luo Daofan cannot determine whether her cultivation is Second Grade, First Grade, or even Saint-rank. 103

The illusion realm

Tianyan accompanies Xu Yuan into the Self-Forgetfulness Illusion Realm. The Spirit Soul Chapter of her Yantian Art protects her from self-forgetfulness, allowing her to retain her identity while most people within the realm cannot recognize its nature. 125

Her technique can alter her apparent age and personality. In her younger form, she is markedly more talkative and playful than her aloof childlike form, though she temporarily loses her ability to see the future. 106

After reaching Third Grade, Tianyan becomes Xu Yuan’s sparring partner and ally. Xu Yuan removes the Love-Inducing Curse he had used to restrain her, accepting that her continued growth is necessary for their survival. 130

When Shen Weixiu attempts to seize her constitution for the Charm God Cherry Tree, Tianyan fights him with the Four-Direction Seal and forces him to retreat. 137

Seven years on the run

Tianyan and Xu Yuan spend seven years fleeing the Heavenly Oversight Pavilion and other pursuing powers within the illusion realm. Her knowledge of the Yantian Art lets them counter the Pavilion’s divinations and survive repeated manhunts. 139 393

Their prolonged dependence develops into a close but volatile bond. Tianyan helps Xu Yuan treat injuries, monitors their pursuers, and ultimately admits that he is the only person she can trust. 393 394

Tianye and the possession crisis

Tianyan encounters Tianye, a Holy Maiden from the illusion’s era whose golden eyes and Heavenly Oversight Pavilion arts mirror her own. Tianyan reveals that she is not from that era and that the world around them is an illusion that died twenty thousand years ago. 415

Tianye eventually attempts to possess Tianyan’s body in order to escape the illusion’s destruction. Although the Yantian Divine Soul is normally immune to possession, Tianye temporarily occupies Tianyan’s body; Tianyan remains conscious and can contest control. 426 627 660

Return to the present

After the illusion’s events, Tianyan and Xu Yuan separate amid mutual suspicion, but agree that he will help purge her Charm God poison every half month. 428

When Tianyan learns that the Heavenly Oversight Pavilion has assassinated Xu Yuan, she immediately understands that he had forced her away to protect her. Her loyalty to him conflicts directly with her position in the Pavilion. 453 467

She later appears at the Sword Sect as the Heavenly Oversight Pavilion’s Holy Maiden, enters the Tianyuan Grand Competition at Mortal Shedding, and publicly announces her intent to kill Xu Yuan. 787 788

Tianyan is a petite, exceptionally beautiful golden-eyed woman whose appearance shifts with the Yantian Art. She is first seen as a young girl, but can present herself as an older maiden or a divine, white-clad Holy Maiden. 103 106 787

Beneath this composure, she is emotionally direct and comparatively inexperienced with ordinary interpersonal conflicts. She becomes flustered when teased, reacts strongly to jealousy, and may withdraw rather than admit what she feels. 122 394 413
