Background

Li Qingyan spent much of her life in the Northern Border, where years of warfare left her with little sibling attachment to the imperial family and established her fearsome military reputation. She is known widely as a “female killing god.” 228 231

Li Yaoxuan later states that he deliberately sent Qingyan to the Northern Border, groomed her as a potential successor, severed her ties with the Crown Prince, and cultivated her hatred of the sects through repeated personal losses. Qingyan herself makes clear that her hostility toward the sects is rooted less in abstract patriotism than in the people she lost to them. 272 764

When Beifeng City’s frontier officers attempted to use the northern gate to evacuate their families and property, she exposed their scheme, executed Captain Nie for insubordination, and forced Commander Qi to submit. 237

Her political judgment is pragmatic rather than partisan. She initially declares that she will support whoever can resolve Great Yan’s internal and external crises, regardless of which claimant they are. Later, when offered a path to the throne, she recognizes both its appeal and the legitimacy problems created by her alliance with Xu Yuan. 240 762

Behind her stern public image, Qingyan is intensely protective of those she accepts as her own. She exposes the officers’ evacuation scheme, executes Captain Nie, compels Commander Qi’s obedience, and launches the Black Scale Army’s southern-gate attack on the Barbarian camp. 237

She then recruits Xu Yuan as her personal guard, while making clear that her support in the succession conflict belongs to whoever can solve Great Yan’s crises rather than to any particular prince. 240
