Background / History
Jiraiya returns to Konoha shortly after Akiyama Shun completes his first bandit-clearing mission under Tsunade. His return is announced to Shun by Yuhi Kurenai. 23
He meets Shun and Tsunade on the way to a mission briefing, quickly taking an interest in Shun's gambling success and ability to fund Tsunade's habits. Seeking inspiration for his next book, Jiraiya shows Shun inappropriate reading material, provoking an immediate beating from Tsunade. 24
After reading a manuscript written by Shun, Jiraiya becomes determined to learn writing from him. He formally asks Shun to teach him, repeatedly addressing the much younger ninja as “Teacher.” 25 27 He continues seeking Shun's advice on literary themes after the Chunin Exams. 38
Following Shun's promotion, Jiraiya becomes part of his regular training routine and later leads him on missions alongside Aburame Takuma and Sarutobi Jun'suke. 42 45 During a Land of Grass intelligence mission, he leaves the team briefly to retrieve information, then rushes back in fear that Shun and the others have been overwhelmed. He finds them alive after Shun has annihilated the attackers with the Bone Forest. 46 47 48
At the outbreak of the Third Shinobi World War, Jiraiya leads Konoha forces toward the western front against Sunagakure. 51 He reinforces Sector C7, then leads selected troops—including Shun—to reclaim Sector C8, where he battles Chiyo with Gamaken's support. 55 56 After Shun's Wind Release: Rasenshuriken incapacitates Chiyo, Jiraiya keeps Shun at his side to help manage the broader front. 57
Appearance
Jiraiya is identified by his distinctive white, porcupine-like hair. 24
- White hair — described as resembling a porcupine's spines. 24
Personality
Jiraiya is loud, familiar, and openly lecherous. He speaks freely about gambling and adult literature, and his inappropriate behavior toward Shun repeatedly earns Tsunade's violent reprimands. 24 25
Despite this behavior, he is earnest about improving as an author. He treats Shun's literary ability seriously, humbly accepts him as a teacher, and actively seeks his guidance. 25 27 38
In the field, Jiraiya is vigilant and decisive. He warns his team about the dangers of border travel, adapts the mission around incomplete intelligence, and becomes visibly anxious when he believes his subordinates may be in danger. 45 46 47
