Background / History

Learning the Witch Race’s Future

Houtu reveals the Chat Group to her siblings after its arrival causes a fluctuation in her aura. Zhu Jiuyin cannot detect its workings, but reasons that anything capable of entering Pangu Hall must have Pangu’s permission. Chen Yu then shares prehistoric-themed novels, exposing a tragic possible future for the Witch Race 383.

Rather than treating that future as inevitable, Houtu asks the group for ways to protect her race. She passes along suggestions for combination techniques and seeks opportunities to earn merit. Li Changshou recommends repairing the western earth veins, while discussions about Mount Buzhou prompt her to search for gifts or answers left by Pangu 386 387.

Hosting Chen Yu

Houtu interrupts her climb of Mount Buzhou to welcome Chen Yu to Pangu Hall and compensate him for his advice. She discourages Dijiang from accompanying her because Chen Yu is too weak to safely withstand an excited Ancestral Witch’s attention 390.

She takes Chen Yu to the Ancestral Witches’ treasury and lends him two Jade of Creation fragments containing the Laws of Soul and Reincarnation. Although she initially lacks a primordial spirit to study them directly, observing his transformations lets her deepen her understanding of Earth and Reincarnation 391 392.

Seeking Pangu’s Help

Houtu guards Chen Yu during his early climb of Mount Buzhou, then rejoins her siblings near the summit. There she discovers that the Nuwa she previously met in the Prehistoric World is also the Nuwa in the Chat Group 394 395.

Reaching the summit before the others, Houtu suspects that the destruction of the Western Continent has weakened Pangu’s will. She prays about the world’s condition and the Witch Race’s future, with her siblings, Nuwa, and Fuxi joining her plea. She later delivers Pangu’s gifts—the Twenty-Fourth Grade Creation Azure Lotus and a Jade of Creation fragment—to Chen Yu 396 400.

Overcoming the Lack of a Primordial Spirit

The Ancestral Witches compel the Three Pure Ones to exchange primordial spirit origin for Ancestral Witch blood essence. Before absorbing it, Houtu uses the Chat Group Mall to inspect the origin and discovers Laozi’s hidden soul imprint. She removes it with the Six Paths Reincarnation Wheel 404.

Houtu successfully forms a primordial spirit, then offers the remaining origin to her siblings. Zhu Jiuyin consumes the remainder to form his own. Houtu credits Chen Yu’s proposal with allowing her to achieve this without waiting for the future opportunity Pangu had mentioned 405.

Establishing Reincarnation and the Witch Race

With Hongjun occupied in Chaos, Houtu acts on the plan to establish the Underworld. Above the Blood Sea, she declares six reincarnation paths and dissolves her Ancestral Witch body around the Six Paths Reincarnation Wheel. Her siblings also merge their bodies into reincarnation to strengthen the emerging Earthly Dao 430 431.

The Heavenly Dao clashes with the Earthly Dao until the Great Dao intervenes. After the Twelve Ancestral Witches are reborn, Houtu establishes the Witch Race under a mandate to guard the Earthly Dao and protect the Prehistoric World, using Pangu Hall to suppress its fortune 431 432.

Building the Underworld

Houtu appoints Chen Yu as the Fengdu Great Emperor, making him the Underworld’s second-in-command. Its establishment brings Great Dao and Earthly Dao merit: Houtu receives 50%, Chen Yu receives 30%, and the Underworld receives 20% 433 434.

She recruits officials, appoints ten Great Witches as the Ten Yama Kings, and directs her eleven siblings to lead the Witch Race in clearing earth veins. When the resulting influx of dead souls overwhelms the Underworld, she supports Chen Yu’s proposal to bring in temporary workers from other worlds 435 436 437.

Strengthening the Earthly Dao

Houtu and Nuwa prevent Hongjun from retaliating against Chen Yu after he disrupts Hongjun’s plans. She accepts three top-grade innate treasures to settle the associated karmic ties and passes them to Chen Yu. She also approves his proposed earth-vein protection regulations 453 454 455.

After claiming the Thirty-Fourth Heaven, Houtu establishes the Earth Vein Creation Array to stabilize the Prehistoric Continent. The stronger Earthly Dao gives her greater confidence against Hongjun. She later obtains Hongyun’s Hongmeng Violet Qi in exchange for an Earthly Dao fruition position and negotiates a three-thousand-year loan of the Jade of Creation for Chen Yu’s use 459 463 465.

Appearance

  • Described as a stunning woman with beautiful eyes, delicate dark brows, and a lovely smile 383 387 392.
  • After forming her primordial spirit, her formerly cold, weighty gaze gains a compassion described as embracing all things 405.

Personality

Houtu’s compassion is closely tied to her cultivation. Recalling battlefield corpses and souls wandering without a destination accelerates her comprehension of Reincarnation. She ultimately gives up her original body to establish an ordered cycle of life and death 392 431.

She is protective without dismissing weaker people’s contributions. She asks mortals in the Chat Group for advice, lends Chen Yu valuable fragments she cannot yet use, and postpones her own mountain climb to guard him 387 392 395.

Her gentleness does not prevent retaliation. She punishes Chen Yu for disrespectful remarks, reacts with killing intent to Laozi’s tampering, and attacks Hongjun without waiting for his consent to a sparring match. Her earlier beating of Chen Yu is nevertheless measured enough not to truly injure him 394 404 434.

As a ruler, she delegates work and expects initiative. When Chen Yu brings her the Underworld’s workload crisis, she asks for his proposed solution rather than solving everything herself. She also refuses his initial plan to fill every post with outsiders, directing him to recruit local cultivators 436 437.
