Background

Xiao Yan was an early member of the Chat Group and had informed Zhang Sanfeng about the events of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber before Chen Yu joined 2. He was later shown anime clips revealing his future, leaving him shocked and uncertain about how to proceed 6. When the soul within his ring, Yao Lao, awakened, Xiao Yan faced a dilemma: reveal what he knew and risk losing Yao Lao's wholehearted guidance, or remain silent and endure three years as a “trash” figure 11.

Xiao Yan ultimately chose not to reveal his foreknowledge and endured the three-year period as a “waste” figure. By the end of that period, Yao Lao had become his master, and Xiao Yan intended to train in the Magical Beast Mountain Range after bringing Yao Lao to his side 15. Yao Lao later assisted him in harvesting immortal herbs from the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well 33.

He later traveled between worlds through the Chat Group. Although invited to Suotuo City, he declined because using another Transmigration Talisman required Yao Lao's consent 11. By the New Year gathering, he had brought Xiao Yi Xian to Chen Yu's residence, while Xiao Xun'er’s changed attitude and expectations that he support her sisters left him feeling pressured 59.

Xiao Yan strongly dislikes being perceived as weak or worthless. His uncertainty over Yao Lao stems from wanting both to avoid years of humiliation and to retain the guidance of a powerful Dou Zun alchemist 11.

He can be competitive and eager to display his accomplishments, becoming overjoyed after awakening his Twin Martial Souls and wanting to show them off 76. He also participates in the group's teasing and banter, laughing at Ye Fan's predicament while avoiding questions about his own unusual behavior 89.

Xiao Yan is quick to trade barbs with Chen Yu and Ye Fan, though he is particularly sensitive when their teasing involves Xiao Xun'er, Queen Medusa, or his prospective daughter 311. He is confident in his own strength, even claiming that he could suppress Chen Yu if they fought at the same cultivation level 291.

Xiao Yan ultimately chose not to reveal what he knew, accepting the three years in which he would be regarded as a waste rather than risk losing Yao Lao's guidance 15.

Three-Year Appointment

By the time Chen Yu emerged from two years of seclusion, Xiao Yan's three-year appointment had already concluded. Xiao Yan stated that he had handled it alone and did not summon the Chat Group members to support him 40.

Immortal Herb Collection

Chen Yu invited Xiao Yan and Yao Lao to the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well to collect and refine immortal herbs. Yao Lao assessed the herbs and directed Xiao Yan in harvesting them, including the Infernal Delicate Apricot and Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass 33.
