Background / History

Madara was once the head of the Uchiha Clan and fought alongside Hashirama Senju before the two founded Konoha. Though he later betrayed the village, Itachi concludes that Madara's actions were tied to his own vision of peace for the Ninja World. 223

For much of the early story, Obito Uchiha operates under Madara's name while wearing a mask. His impersonation collapses after Genkawa counters Kamui, defeats him in Konoha, and exposes his identity. 32 35 43

Obito eventually revives the real Madara in the Land of Birds through Impure World Reincarnation, using a special White Zetsu as the vessel. Madara immediately recognizes the danger posed by Genkawa, condemns Obito for ignoring him, breaks the control seals placed upon his reanimated body, and takes control of the operation to retrieve the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and begin collecting Tailed Beasts. 120 121

Madara confronts Genkawa directly and recognizes him as a worthy opponent after their taijutsu and kenjutsu duel.
