Background / History

Military career and interest in Genkawa

Orochimaru commanded Konoha’s western front during the Third Shinobi World War. Genkawa later observes that he withdrew from the front lines as Minato Namikaze rose to prominence. By the aftermath of the Nine-Tails incident, he remains a Konoha shinobi and a renowned member of the Sannin 14 16.

After watching Genkawa at the Fourth Hokage’s funeral, Orochimaru approaches him at a training ground. He praises Genkawa’s suppression of the Nine-Tails and offers an invitation, but Genkawa identifies his interest in the innate Sage Body. Orochimaru’s subsequent surprise attack fails when Genkawa evades it with the Body Flicker Technique 14 16.

Their exchange develops into a fight using taijutsu, elemental ninjutsu, and swordsmanship. Genkawa deliberately accepts a stab wound to close the distance, takes Orochimaru’s Kusanagi Sword, and uses a momentary Sharingan illusion to sever his arm. Orochimaru acknowledges the loss, although he believes he could still defeat Genkawa if he used his full capabilities. He relinquishes the sword and provides a scabbard and an extensive ninjutsu scroll 17 18.

Collaboration with Danzō

Orochimaru works with Danzō Shimura on Hashirama-cell transplantation. Losing his arm delays the planned operation, and he reminds Danzō that the procedure depends on preparation, resources, and his expertise 18 19.

He eventually grafts Obito’s arm and Hashirama cells into Danzō. The resulting Yang Style chakra threatens to consume Danzō within approximately one or two years. Orochimaru explains that Yin Style chakra could balance it, allowing Danzō to reach the conclusion that he needs Sharingan without explicitly recommending them himself 54.

Orochimaru later agrees to perform Sharingan transplantation in return for requested materials. Meanwhile, he again tries to recruit Genkawa and warns him that Danzō has secretly contacted Obito. His research continues in multiple underground facilities, including converted Root bases staffed by former Root researchers. These experiments include human cloning and work with Hashirama cells. Resurrection schemes and the Five Kage Summit

Orochimaru agrees to provide Obito with improved Impure World Reincarnation in exchange for additional White Zetsu corpses. Obito subsequently uses the technique to reanimate Madara. Their partnership fractures over the approaching conflict. Tobirama delivers a Tenseigan research scroll from the Sage of Six Paths as an inducement to cooperate. Orochimaru recognizes the attempted recruitment but chooses Genkawa instead, judging his potential superior and believing opposition to him will end badly.
