Terminology
The term Judge is used for two related but distinct concepts:
- A temporary Dungeon identity, such as Yuki's role in Yadu Town, which required him to purge fanatical Believers while avoiding harm to ordinary people and shallow believers 108.
- The larger Judge organization: a special group of Players serving as the Reincarnation Game's executioners and carrying out Judgment Missions 331 572.
Hierarchy and Organization
| Position | Requirements / Authority | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Judge / Adjudicator | Must undergo a trial that requires killing those closest to them to prove fairness and loyalty to the Reincarnation Game 572 | Ordinary Judges have no authority within Judgment Domain and serve as combat specialists and search forces 572 605 |

Abilities and Authority
Judgment Missions
Judges are assigned missions to pursue and eliminate designated targets. These missions continue independently of Dungeon main quests, allowing the Judge to operate as an external threat within Dungeons 349 432.
- Judgment targets may be placed on a wanted list that cannot be erased 436.
- The Judge's pursuit of Taiyi is treated as a Reincarnation-level judgment mission, requiring all ten Grand Judges to gather 381.
- The organization has limited resources; Taiyi's decoys and other wanted targets can force it to divide its attention 487.
Faction Judgment
Faction Judgment is a high-level authority that can isolate an Outpost from the Reincarnation Game.
- A Grand Inquisitor must enter the target Outpost to activate it 551.
- Once activated, it can lock an Outpost and cut it off from outside interference for a limited period 577 581.
- A single infiltrating Judge can create a passage for reinforcements if an Outpost's defenses contain a vulnerability 551.
- The authority is not absolute: the Judges' uncertainty over Taiyi's ability to bypass isolation repeatedly makes them reluctant to commit fully 610 611.
Judgment Domain
Judgment Domain is the Judges' Outpost, appearing as a desert containing hundreds of folded spaces represented by stars 572.
- Each star is an independent kingdom assigned to a Grand Judge 572.
- Grand Judges may visit one another's kingdoms, while ordinary Judges are restricted to their assigned domains 572.
- Judges are forbidden from fighting one another within the Domain 572.
- After a Grand Judge's death, that Judge's subordinates are redistributed to preserve the organization's combat power 572.
Hundred Eyes of True Knowledge
The Judge uses Hundred Eyes of True Knowledge for investigation, tracking, and information analysis.
- It can identify roots and connections used to locate Players 381.
- Its surveillance and reverse resonance are powerful enough to threaten even major factions, though Taiyi has repeatedly deceived or bypassed it 551 610.
- Yuki later gains the ability to sense Judgment Missions after devouring Hundred Eyes of True Knowledge 432.
Methods
- Judges prioritize discretion during Judgment Missions; their principle is to avoid unnecessary complications rather than openly overwhelm local factions 448.
- They cannot directly contact Dungeon-native races during the Great Game and must work through a Player serving as an assistant to a participating race 448.
- Their squads are designed with specialized combat roles, including attackers, defenders, scouts, support, and detection specialists 456.
- Ordinary Judges are deployed in large numbers for searches and attrition, while Grand Judges respond to powerful opponents 605.
- Grand Judges can instantly assemble and may be able to invade separated spaces, making direct isolation tactics hazardous for their enemies 605.
Weaknesses and Limitations
- Judges do not undertake Dungeon main quests and are treated as outsiders to the Great Game, making them a potential threat to every native race 453.
- Their mission deadlines can force aggressive action and expose flaws in their planning 456.
- Their resources are finite; simultaneous false leads, wanted criminals, and resistance movements can overstretch their surveillance and deployment capacity 487.
- Grand Judges lack a unified will. Their differing ambitions and fear of becoming another's stepping stone undermine Aizen's ability to command them absolutely 610 611.
- Faction Judgment restricts the Judges themselves from interfering with events inside the affected faction under certain conditions 577.
- The deaths of Dio Brando and other Grand Judges prove that the organization is not invincible, encouraging wider resistance among Players 487 493.
Relationships
- Reincarnation Game — The Judge acts as the Game's blade, enforcing its will in exchange for a separate path of advancement and protected domains 331 572.
- Taiyi / Yuki Sorajima — Primary judgment target and the Judge's most persistent adversary; his use of aliases, factions, and loopholes repeatedly disrupts their investigations 381 493.
- Aizen Sōsuke — A leading Grand Judge and strategist who coordinates the hunt for Taiyi, though he lacks absolute control over the other Grand Judges 380 610.
- Dio Brando — Grand Judge who led a Judge squad during the Race War; he was killed, becoming a major symbol of the Judge's vulnerability 456 487.
- Boros — Grand Inquisitor killed by Yuki during the Outpost conflict, deterring other Grand Inquisitors from entering Judgment Domain 614.
- Valhalla — Hostile faction whose former king, Solomon, became a Judge after betraying and slaughtering his subjects 393 423.
- Machine Intelligence — A faction opposed to the Judge and targeted by its investigations while sheltering wanted Players 486 487.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Pursuit of Taiyi
The Judge begins pursuing Taiyi after traces connect him to Thorny Rose, the Tower of Asura, and the fabricated identities surrounding “Li Dan” and “Head Hunter.” Its members are wary of confronting him directly because they believe multiple powerful factions may be protecting him 330 332.
Yuki kills a Judge during the Witch God's Dungeon and receives a reward choice from the Reincarnation Game, confirming that Judges can be defeated and looted like other hostile Players 342.
Investigation of Li Dan and Head Hunter
Unable to directly locate Taiyi, the Judge investigates the purported roots of Li Dan and Head Hunter. It gathers all ten Grand Judges because the operation is considered a Reincarnation-level judgment mission, but its efforts are repeatedly misdirected by Yuki's layered identities and truthful-but-incomplete witnesses 380 381.
Race War
During the Great Game, Dio Brando leads a Judge squad seeking Ikaros. The Judges ally with humanity because they cannot directly approach Dungeon-native races, believing Yuki's apparent loyalty to humanity makes him controllable 448 455.
Yuki instead manipulates the Judges into becoming a common enemy for several races. Their coordinated squad is divided across the battlefield and ultimately wiped out by the combined forces of multiple factions 458 460 463.
Faction Judgment Conflict
The Judge launches Faction Judgment against Night Parade of One Hundred Demons to lure Taiyi into the open, only for Yuki to exploit the authority's restrictions and reveal his plan to free the faction from the Reincarnation Game 567 577.
Later, the Judge attacks Thorny Rose's Outpost with thousands of ordinary Judges and multiple Grand Judges. Its forces search the Outpost's expanded exclusive spaces while Taiyi uses guerrilla warfare, isolated battlefields, and ambushes to divide them 604 605.
Final Outpost War
As the conflict escalates, Yuki turns the Judge's caution into a weapon, creating the impression that any isolated battlefield could kill a Grand Judge 611. He kills Boros, occupies Judgment Domain, and forces the remaining Grand Inquisitors to hesitate over direct intervention 614.
By the beginning of the final confrontation, Yuki has eliminated four Grand Judges and compelled the surviving Judges to fight separately rather than as a unified force 615.
Trivia
- Becoming a Judge requires killing one's closest companions, making the organization simultaneously feared, hated, and desired by Players seeking power and authority 572.
- Each Grand Judge's kingdom is customized to its ruler; Dio Brando's domain is known as Eternal Night London 572.
- The Judge's ordinary members are described as more combat-efficient than typical Players because their evaluations contain little “inflation” from impractical skills or items 551.
