Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Completed immortality jutsu 65 Reveals his success to Hiruzen while displaying a youthful body. The technique’s completion predates this announcement.
Body-transfer ritual 72 73 Transfers bodies after his condition deteriorates following Hiruzen’s sealing attack. His strength recovers, but his hands remain unusable.
Restoration of his hands 73 Regains the sealed portions of his arms when the Shinigami’s stomach is opened, then performs Impure World Reincarnation for Naruto.

Background

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and the pupil Hiruzen favored most for his talent and resemblance to himself. He also fought alongside Minato Namikaze before Naruto’s birth, giving him firsthand familiarity with the Flying Thunder God Technique 49 65.

Before becoming rogue ninja, Orochimaru and Hiruko were comrades in Konoha and both worked for Danzo. Their research interests overlapped, but their methods caused mutual contempt: Orochimaru dismissed Hiruko’s bloodline-fusion ambitions, while Hiruko regarded Orochimaru’s theft of other people’s bodies as a wicked path 93.

Orochimaru’s earlier ambition was to learn every advanced jutsu. His later work concentrated on immortality, desirable bloodlines, and the creation of a perfect body 50 65 153.

Appearance

  • Golden eyes with vertical pupils are visible during his Forest of Death encounter and later negotiations with Naruto 48 149.
  • Pale complexion, turning ashen when his condition worsens after losing the use of his hands 71.
  • Youthful face despite his age; Hiruzen notes that Orochimaru is older than Asuma when confronted with his immortality technique 65.
  • Grass-ninja clothing serves as his disguise during the Chunin Exams 46 48.
  • Laboratory clothing is worn when Naruto unexpectedly summons him during his research 224.

Personality

Orochimaru’s scientific curiosity can override his original objectives. Naruto’s unexplained Sharingan and multiple bloodlines fascinate him enough to redirect his attention from Sasuke toward Hiruko’s research. Later, learning about the Ōtsutsuki causes him to reconsider bloodline fusion as a route to ultimate strength 49 91 149.

He treats research achievements as works of art, openly admiring both his immortality technique and the purified Byakugan he creates. His desire to possess exceptional powers persists even when he recognizes that their owners are far stronger than he is 93 153 158 170.

Despite his pride, Orochimaru is pragmatic about survival. He suppresses his anger over Naruto’s permanent Flying Thunder God mark rather than fight immediately after recovering his arms. His dealings with Naruto remain transactional, mixing genuine cooperation with attempts to obtain Naruto’s cells 74 158.

He is also an accomplished deceiver. After the confrontation involving Isshiki, he combines truth and fabrication to mislead Nagato about Isshiki’s identity and abilities 170.

Abilities & Skills

Immortality and Body Transfer

Orochimaru prolongs his existence by taking over other bodies 65 71.

  • A body transfer can be performed only once every three years 71.
  • He initially reserves a transfer opportunity for Sasuke, but rejects taking him immediately because his Two-Tomoe Sharingan is insufficiently developed 71.
  • Changing bodies does not restore the portions of his arms sealed by the Dead Demon Consuming Seal 72 73.
  • Naruto considers permanently killing him difficult because of the unknown number of people bearing his Heavenly Cursed Seal 50.

Snake Techniques and Bodily Alteration

Orochimaru uses snakes, elongated body parts, and unusual substitution methods in combat 48 49.

  • Summoning Jutsu: Calls forth two giant snakes against Naruto’s Shadow Clones 48.
  • Ten Thousand Snake Strangling: Transforms his arms into masses of attacking snakes 48.
  • Neck extension: Pursues Sasuke across a retreat of more than ten meters and bites his neck 48.
  • Snake-like substitution: Produces another Orochimaru from his mouth to replace his previous body 49.
  • This substitution cannot remove Naruto’s Flying Thunder God mark or remedy the damage caused by Hiruzen’s sealing technique 49 71.

Heavenly Cursed Seal

Orochimaru implants the Heavenly Cursed Seal into Sasuke through a bite, sending chakra into his body and causing him to lose consciousness 48 49.

  • Naruto identifies Senjutsu as the seal’s underlying power 50.
  • Naruto suppresses Sasuke’s seal with the Five Elements Seal rather than removing it completely 50 51.
  • The cursed seals contribute to Orochimaru’s ability to return after apparent death 49 50.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru can summon the dead through Impure World Reincarnation 73.

  • Revives Minato for Naruto after recovering his hands 73.
  • Leaves no means of controlling Minato during that agreed-upon summoning 74.
  • Later summons Kushina for the Akatsuki and releases the technique after Madara extracts her Nine-Tails chakra 224.

Human Experimentation and Bloodline Research

Orochimaru is an expert in human anatomy, cell research, and experimental fusion 71 93.

  • Hashirama Cells: Possesses samples and the technology to make them usable; supplies a sample to Naruto through Kabuto 72 82.
  • Chimera Technique: Helps Hiruko complete a more advanced version of his bloodline-fusion technique 137 144.
  • Bloodline selection: Persuades Hiruko to pursue Wood Release instead of Kakashi’s Sharingan 137.
  • Technical limits: Neither he nor Kabuto can solve his sealed-arm condition through their anatomical expertise alone 71.

Byakugan Cloning and Purification

At Naruto’s request, Orochimaru cultivates Byakugan for Toneri using Himawari’s cells 149 150.

  • Chooses Himawari because her Byakugan is purer than any then available in the Ninja World 150.
  • Discovers that cultivated Byakugan can devour one another to increase their purity 150.
  • Arranges dozens of eyes into a sphere inside a glass cylinder during the experiment 150.
  • Produces one final pair with formidable visual power after the other eyes lose theirs 158.
  • The experiment does not establish that Orochimaru awakened a Tenseigan 158.

Perception and Intimidation

  • Detects Naruto noticing his approach and recognizes the boy’s unusually sharp perception 48.
  • Releases killing intent powerful enough to make Hinata faint 49.
  • Recognizes Naruto’s mastery of the Nine-Tails, but is immobilized inside Naruto’s Sharingan illusion during their negotiation 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Hashirama Cell samples — Research material supplied to Naruto as part of their agreement 72.
  • Dust Release training method — Obtained for Naruto after his request to learn powerful predecessors’ techniques 75 149.
  • Cultivated Byakugan — Experimental eyes purified into a final pair and handed over to Naruto 150 158.
  • Kusanagi Swords — Collects and studies these weapons; his expertise allows him to identify Naruto’s Ame-no-Murakumo Sword 180.

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Recurring client, research fascination, and potential source of the perfect body. Their cooperation begins under pressure from Naruto’s Flying Thunder God mark and develops into exchanges of techniques, biological material, and information. Naruto repeatedly refuses to provide his own cells 49 72 149 158.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Trusted assistant who monitors his health, prepares rituals, distributes research samples, and accompanies him to Hiruko’s hideout 71 72 73 93.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and favored mentor. Orochimaru attacks him during the invasion of Konoha; Hiruzen seals his hands before dying 65 67 76.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Initially targeted as a future body and marked with the Heavenly Cursed Seal. Orochimaru abandons efforts to lure him after seeing Naruto’s success, though Sasuke’s later Susanoo renews his interest in the Sharingan 48 71 91 144.
  • Hiruko — Former comrade and research rival turned collaborator. Their joint work improves the Chimera Technique, but they differ over which bloodlines to pursue 93 137 144.
  • Danzo Shimura — Former superior and fellow possessor of Hashirama Cells. Danzo correctly suspects Orochimaru’s involvement when Naruto demonstrates Wood Release 82 93.
  • Toneri Ōtsutsuki — Recipient of the purified Byakugan commissioned by Naruto 149 158 160.
  • Himawari Uzumaki — Source of the cells used in his Byakugan-cloning experiment 150.
  • Nagato — Deceived by Orochimaru’s account of Isshiki, leading the Akatsuki to monitor him 170.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chunin Exams and the First Agreement

Orochimaru infiltrates the Chunin Exams disguised as a Grass ninja and initially focuses on Sasuke. During their Forest of Death battle, he implants Sasuke’s cursed seal, but Naruto exploits the opening to mark Orochimaru’s neck with Flying Thunder God 46 48.

After failing to shed the mark, Orochimaru witnesses Naruto’s Nine-Tails power and Sharingan. He agrees to provide Hashirama Cells in exchange for Naruto’s assurance that he seeks power rather than interference in Orochimaru’s plans 49.

Attack on Konoha and Recovery

Orochimaru launches his attack during the exam finals, confronting Hiruzen inside the Sound Four’s Four Violet Flames Formation. Hiruzen’s final sealing attack deprives him of the use of his hands 65 67.

Naruto subsequently offers a solution while requesting Hashirama Cells and Minato’s reincarnation. Their agreement restores Orochimaru’s hands and enables Naruto to meet his father 71 72 73.

Collaboration with Hiruko

Naruto’s multiple bloodlines convince Orochimaru that bloodline fusion is possible. He seeks out Hiruko, learns that his experiments remain unfinished, and eventually joins him in developing the technique 50 91 93 136.

Orochimaru helps Hiruko conduct the first experiment and uses its results to refine his own plans. During the conflict in the Land of Demons, Hiruko demonstrates the enhanced technique, including Wood Release 137 144 148.

Orochimaru’s redirected attention also changes Sasuke’s course: without his temptation, Sasuke remains in Konoha under Kakashi’s instruction 108.

Byakugan Research and Isshiki

After delivering Dust Release, Orochimaru learns about Himawari’s future origins and the Ōtsutsuki Clan. Naruto commissions pure Byakugan for Toneri, opening a new direction in Orochimaru’s research 149 150.

Upon completing the eyes, Orochimaru requests Naruto’s cells. Naruto refuses and instead supplies information about the weakened Isshiki, encouraging Orochimaru to involve the Akatsuki as a means of testing him. Orochimaru later conceals the truth from Nagato and presents Isshiki as Asura 158 170.

Kushina’s Release

When Naruto’s attempt to reincarnate Kushina fails, he discovers that Orochimaru has already summoned her for the Akatsuki. They arrange for Madara to extract her Nine-Tails chakra before Orochimaru releases his summoning. Naruto then reincarnates Kushina himself and restores both parents to living bodies with the Rinnegan 224.

Future-World Counterpart

The Orochimaru encountered alongside Adult Naruto is a future-world counterpart whose research centers on Ōtsutsuki remains 165 167.

Research area Documented findings
Ōtsutsuki physiology Identifies their cells, high-quality chakra, and Rinnegan as especially valuable research materials 165.
Research specimens Keeps Ōtsutsuki remains and several Rinnegan, including eyes associated with Object Control and Space Ability 165 167.
Transplantation risks Avoids personally experimenting with the eyes because residual Ōtsutsuki power can create a risk of revival or possession 166.
Research limitations Studies the eyes themselves but cannot directly investigate their Dōjutsu 167.

He still seeks the younger Naruto’s cells and offers additional Rinnegan in exchange. Although he guards against theft, Naruto secretly summons the remaining eyes, drains their ocular power, and returns them without discovery 167.

This counterpart also acknowledges that his substitution technique cannot match Naruto’s Nine Fox Technique against attacks affecting chakra and the soul 178.
