Background / History

The Undead element was originally regarded as dark arts and forbidden magic before being incorporated into the magic system. It remains unrecognized by some countries because its users form contracts with undead, while certain Undead Mages create exclusive undead by killing living beings. 3

The element has two historical creators: Huaxia's Ancient King and Egypt's Pharaoh King Khufu. Although both systems concern undead, their origins differ: Eastern undead derive from secret arts such as corpse-raising and ghost-raising, whereas Western undead arose from curse-based immortality. 46

The Eastern Undead System once prospered through numerous sects, including Maoshan, Xiangxi Corpse Herding, Yinshan, and Lushan. During a dynastic change, Undead Mages used widespread death and unearthed tomb undead to pursue an Undead Dynasty. Their defeat in the Great Undead Calamity led to a complete ban, the destruction of sects, and the burning of texts on powerful undead secret arts. 353

As a result, the Eastern system rapidly declined. Pearl Institute has so few Undead element students that its department is merged with the Summoning System Academy and generally has only one student per grade. 29 Egypt, by contrast, maintains a thriving Undead Mage tradition. 43

Characteristics

The Undead element resembles the Summoning System in that its users can call undead from the Underworld and maintain them through contracts. Its source is the Dark Plane rather than the Summoning System's origin, however, and its Undead Space follows different rules. 3 47

• Undead are exceptionally difficult to kill, do not feel pain, and do not tire. 3 40
• An Undead Space expands with the mage's cultivation; contracting additional undead does not create a second space. 47
• Intermediate-level cultivation normally opens the Undead Space and enables Undead Contracts. 47

Undead Summoning

The core Beginner magic calls undead from the Underworld for combat. Jiang Yuan's first summon was a White Skeleton Soldier; later, the same undead evolved into the Three-eyed Underworld General. 3 28

Jiang Yuan's Undead Space can absorb and store Soul Essences, an abnormal innate talent that standard magic theory does not attribute to Undead Spaces. 5
