Background / History

Sarutobi Hiruzen serves as Konoha's Third Hokage and one of the village's principal power brokers alongside Shimura Danzō. Early in the story, he is portrayed as monitoring ambitious members of Konoha's great clans—particularly Hyuga Seigo—and viewing their independent strength as a danger to village control 1 5.

During Shisui Uchiha's ambush by Root, Danzō tells Shisui that the operation had Hiruzen's approval, exploiting Shisui's trust in the Hokage to break his resolve. The statement is Danzō's own claim, but it leaves Shisui convinced that Hiruzen had betrayed him 10.

Following the Uchiha clan's annihilation, Hiruzen publicly frames Itachi as the sole perpetrator, bows in apology, and pledges to protect Konoha despite his age.
