| Big Ball Rasengan | 236 | Under Jiraiya, stabilizes a chakra sphere over two meters across. Jiraiya estimates his reserves at roughly two hundred times Kakashi’s and praises his improved control. |
Background / History
Childhood and Academy life
Naruto enters the Ninja Academy without parents accompanying him and longs for the Third Hokage’s presence. Adults and children call him a fox demon, while his own ambition is to become Hokage so that everyone will acknowledge him. Iruka’s decision to praise his first classroom introduction and lead the applause nearly moves him to tears 5.
His early academic performance is poor: he fills examination papers with declarations about becoming Hokage rather than answers. He clashes constantly with Sasuke, particularly over Sasuke’s dismissive attitude and Sakura’s affection for him. Their classroom rivalry culminates in an unwanted kiss, after which Sasuke’s admirers swarm and beat Naruto 7.
Despite their arguments, Naruto worries deeply when Sasuke is hospitalized after the Uchiha massacre. He eagerly brings Qingwu to visit when Sasuke wakes, having felt an unexplained emptiness during his absence 15.
Graduation and Mizuki’s betrayal
Naruto graduates successfully and proudly shows Iruka his forehead protector. Mizuki then tries to exploit his desire for recognition, claiming that Iruka wants him to secretly obtain the Scroll of Seals and learn its techniques 86 87.
Naruto senses that something about Mizuki is wrong and ultimately helps turn the scheme against him. When exposed, Mizuki attacks Naruto emotionally, claiming that he is the fox responsible for Konoha’s losses and that Iruka hates him. Qingwu explains to Naruto’s watching friends that the Fourth Hokage sealed the Nine-Tails inside his son to save the village, and that the disaster was not Naruto’s fault 88 90.
The provocation triggers a Nine-Tails eruption. Iruka admits that he once resented Naruto but explains that he came to love him as an innocent, hardworking child. Naruto and the other eight rookies subsequently defeat Mizuki and bring him to justice 91 92.
Formation of Team 7
Naruto is assigned to Team 7 with Sakura and Sasuke under Kakashi Hatake. He initially celebrates being paired with Sakura, then protests Sasuke’s inclusion. Iruka explains that Naruto ranked last overall and that the team balances him with Sasuke’s top-student results and Sakura’s first-place theoretical knowledge 94.
Their cooperation improves through training and missions. During their first B-rank mission in the Land of Waves, Naruto remains enthusiastic and trains diligently while Sasuke and Sakura handle their own responsibilities 137.
Appearance
- Blond hair and blue eyes 9 155.
- Six whisker-like facial marks, which help Jiraiya recognize him as Minato’s son 232.
- Orange tracksuit and a forehead protector that he sometimes wears crookedly 206.
- Beastlike changes during a Nine-Tails eruption: protruding canines, sharpened nails, and a ferocious expression 91.
Personality
Naruto is loud, competitive, and hungry for recognition. He boasts about becoming Hokage, plays pranks to attract attention, and reacts strongly to even small acts of kindness. Iruka describes him as innocent and kind despite his troublesome behavior, emphasizing that his attention-seeking pranks have not hurt anyone 5 88 91.
His recklessness creates practical problems. In the Forest of Death, repeated injuries leave blood trails that make Team 7 easier to track. He also mistakes Sakura’s concern while treating him for romantic interest 172.
Qingwu’s influence makes him less easily deceived and more willing to adapt. He notices Mizuki’s malice, learns caution during training, and changes tactics while Neji is overwhelming him. His poor written answers persist, but they do not reflect the ingenuity he shows in combat 88 164 173 209.
Naruto’s loyalty is particularly fierce when his teammates are threatened. Injuries to Sasuke drive him into a furious attack against the Orochimaru clone, and he repeatedly puts himself between Sasuke and incoming attacks. His refusal to surrender also underpins his belief that effort and will can overcome a genius 177 206 209.
Abilities & Skills
Chakra Reserves and Recovery
- Possesses enough chakra to sustain hundreds of shadow clones and prolonged, large-scale attacks 207 232.
- His reserves are compared to approximately one hundred Kakashis during special training and two hundred Kakashis during Jiraiya’s instruction 124 236.
- Recovers rapidly from injuries, although serious attacks, chakra exhaustion, and Gentle Fist interference can still incapacitate him 172 179 209.
- Breaks through an examination-hall genjutsu barrier by forcing an enormous surge of chakra through it 149.
Nine-Tails Chakra
- Strengthens his physical attacks and produces a chakra cloak that can force an opponent away 124 125.
- Forms foxlike claws and a defensive chakra shield during the Orochimaru clone battle 177.
- Can empower a Rasengan with violent tailed-beast chakra 177.
- Emotional distress can destabilize his control. The Orochimaru clone claims that Naruto cannot control even a tenth of the power available to him 91 177.
- Shows improved restraint when he suppresses the impulse to release the Nine-Tails during Seigo’s killing-intent test 157.
Shadow Clone Techniques
- Uses large numbers of clones for confusion, encirclement, diversions, and coordinated attacks 207 210.
- After Qingwu refines his Cursed Seal, his clones synchronize closely enough to execute layered Wind Release formations 207.
- Uses a clone to absorb Neji’s follow-up palm strikes and escape close-range pressure 209.
- Creates fifty clones as a screen for the maneuver that wins his match against Neji 210.
- Deploys two hundred clones across Konoha to search for Jiraiya 232.
- Neji’s Byakugan can distinguish Naruto’s original body because its chakra is denser and steadier than that of his clones 207.
Rasengan and Variants
| Technique | Documented use and limitations |
|---|---|
| Rasengan | Shreds Sasuke’s Great Fireball into sparks; also used against chakra snakes and Gaara’s sand attacks 125 177 179. |
| Rasengan: Close-Quarters Strike | A smaller, tightly condensed Rasengan delivered to the Xinshu Point on Neji’s back, disrupting a critical chakra-network junction 210. |
| Prototype Wind Release: Rasenshuriken | Incorporates Wind Release into a spiraling shuriken-shaped attack. Its shape is crude, its chakra unstable, and one use consumes nearly half Naruto’s reserves 209. |
| Big Ball Rasengan | Exceeds two meters in diameter and leaves a crater over twenty meters across. Jiraiya describes it as three times as powerful as a normal Rasengan, with higher chakra consumption 236. |
- Can coat his fist with some of a Rasengan’s chakra to enhance a physical strike 208.
- Jiraiya warns that increasing size without sufficient control can injure him; compression and rotation matter more than size alone 236.
Wind Release
- Coordinates Great Breakthrough, Wind Cutter, and Wind Dance through successive rows of clones 207.
- Layers numerous low-ranked techniques until their combined power approaches a B-rank attack 207.
- Uses other clones to hold the opponent’s attention while the attacking clones form seals, compensating for his slow seal execution 207.
- His refined Cursed Seal gives these attacks a trace of senjutsu; this is not documented as mastery of Sage Mode 207.
Qingwu’s Taijutsu
| Technique | Function |
|---|---|
| Steel Fist | Increases punching strength and speed through chakra reinforcement 206. |
| Boxing Step | Concentrates chakra in both ankles for an explosive lunge while stabilizing his landing 208. |
| Cannon Fist | Packs nearly thirty percent of his chakra into one punch; a missed strike fractures the arena paving 209. |
| Ejection Step | Uses rapidly changing chakra flow and Body Flicker principles to create irregular movement and interfere with prediction 209. |
| Steel Fist Step | Carries him behind Neji under cover of a shadow-clone diversion 210. |
| Vortex: Super Naruto Mighty Whirlwind Fist | A Nine-Tails-powered punch demonstrated during his spar with Sasuke 125. |
- His footwork remains rough, and Neji’s evolved Byakugan can still predict its chakra changes 209.
- Shouting an attack gives Neji warning of its timing and trajectory 209.
Cooperation with Gamakichi
- Practices combining Gamakichi’s water jet with a Big Ball Rasengan 236.
- Jiraiya identifies synchronization as the main obstacle: Naruto and Gamakichi have different chakra frequencies and must practice their timing 236.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Konoha forehead protector — received after passing the graduation examination 86.
- Kunai — drawn when Team 7 goes on guard against the concealed Orochimaru replica 173.
- Cursed Seal — implanted on his neck by the Orochimaru clone and later refined by Qingwu; initially causes pain and unconsciousness 178 207.
Relationships
- Hyuga Qingwu / Hyuga Seigo — friend and principal early mentor. Teaches him combat techniques, refines his Cursed Seal, defends him from misplaced blame, and directs him toward Jiraiya 45 90 207 231.
- Sasuke Uchiha — rival, teammate, and deeply important companion. Their arguments and mutual protectiveness are accompanied by an unwanted first kiss and recurring romantic teasing from observers; the passages do not establish a formal romantic relationship 7 15 45 123 177.
- Haruno Sakura — teammate and crush. Naruto seeks chances to impress her, while Sakura treats his wounds and protects both boys when they are incapacitated 45 95 172 179.
- Umino Iruka — Academy teacher and fatherlike source of affection. His acceptance counters Naruto’s isolation and becomes crucial during Mizuki’s attempt to break him emotionally 5 86 88 91.
- Kakashi Hatake — Team 7’s supervising jōnin. Oversees the team’s development and is surprised when Naruto demonstrates Wind Release nature transformation in his Rasengan 94 137 209.
- Jiraiya — later teacher. Accepts Naruto after Qingwu’s intervention and trains his Rasengan control, while reflecting on his obligations to Minato and Naruto’s possible role as the Child of Prophecy 231 232 236.
- Minato Namikaze and Kushina — deceased parents. Minato sealed the Nine-Tails inside Naruto to save Konoha; Jiraiya remembers their wedding and Minato entrusting Naruto’s care to him 90 232.
- Hinata, Kiba, and Shino — friends and members of Team 8, which rescues Team 7 from the Sand siblings. Naruto promises to risk his life for them in return 179 181.
- Neji Hyuga — Chunin Exam opponent. Challenges Naruto’s belief in effort over inherited talent and acknowledges his strength during their match 206 210.
- Mizuki — betraying instructor who tries to use Naruto to obtain the Scroll of Seals, then provoke a Nine-Tails disaster to facilitate his escape 87 90.
- Gamakichi — toad training partner for combination ninjutsu 236.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Chunin Exams: Selection and Forest of Death
Naruto openly confronts hostile examinees and survives Seigo’s killing-intent selection. Although he passes the written stage, his paper again consists largely of boasts and admissions that he does not know the answers 155 158 164.
In the Forest of Death, Team 7 defeats the Sound trio and takes their Scoreboards. Sasuke stops Naruto from pursuing them, suspecting that the encounters are deliberately steering the team into a trap 172.
An Orochimaru replica then overwhelms Team 7. Naruto and Sasuke combine their attacks, but both are badly injured and marked with Cursed Seals. After briefly recovering, they are injured again during an encounter with Gaara’s team; Sakura carries them away, and Team 8 intervenes to save them 173 177 178 179.
Central Tower Crisis
Naruto fights alongside the other Konoha rookies when Cursed Seal attackers trap the examinees in the arena. Afterward, he challenges Hiruzen’s description of ninja as tools and vows to surpass Qingwu and become Hokage 186 187 190.
Preliminary Match Against Neji
Neji repeatedly defeats Naruto’s clone assaults and disrupts his chakra with Gentle Fist. Naruto counters with coordinated Wind Release, irregular footwork, and his prototype Rasenshuriken, but remains under severe pressure 207 208 209.
He wins through a final diversion: fifty clones conceal his movement behind Neji, allowing a tightly condensed Rasengan to strike the Xinshu Point on his back. The victory depends on deception and precise placement rather than simply overpowering Rotation 210.
Training Under Jiraiya
Qingwu encourages Naruto to seek Jiraiya by linking the apprenticeship to his dreams of defeating Sasuke and becoming Hokage. Naruto searches Konoha with two hundred clones before finding him 231 232.
Under Jiraiya, Naruto masters the Big Ball Rasengan and begins experimenting with Gamakichi’s water attacks. Jiraiya tempers his eagerness to build an even larger Rasengan with warnings about control and self-injury 236.
