Background / History

Konoha service and defection

During the Third Shinobi World War, Orochimaru commanded several theaters, including the Mist Battlefield where Shisui served. His ruthless orders preserved combat strength but left Shisui with recurring nightmares. Shisui nevertheless judged many of those decisions correct and considered him a credible alternative to Minato as Hokage 34.

Orochimaru resented Hiruzen’s decision to choose Minato rather than him, though he still regarded Minato as the greatest shinobi genius since Hashirama. After defecting, he took copies of numerous Konoha forbidden techniques, including Impure World Reincarnation, and became an S-rank missing-nin pursued by the village’s Anbu 31 70.

Danzō’s commission and the Uchiha ambush

Orochimaru renewed his partnership with Danzō in exchange for research funding, intelligence on his pursuers, and unusual experimental subjects. Danzō asked him to take Sora’s eyes and disclosed that Minato was dead and the apparent Fourth Hokage was an impostor. Orochimaru chose to investigate Sora himself rather than accept Root escorts 31.

He intercepted Sora and Shisui in the Land of Wind alongside Sasori, initially offering them a place in his organization. Once fighting began, Sora summoned Akainu despite Orochimaru’s anti-summoning barrier. Orochimaru fought Akainu while the two Uchiha defeated and captured Sasori 34 35 38.

Repeated bodily destruction failed to kill Orochimaru, but Akainu’s elemental body and stamina left him without a clear route to victory. After Akainu defeated Manda, Orochimaru escaped behind a mass of snakes produced by the Mandara Formation 37 39.

Back in the Land of Rain, he reported Sasori’s apparent death to Pain. His technically true statements concealed that only two Uchiha had fought them and that Sasori’s core had been captured. He obtained recovery funds from Akatsuki while already regenerating his injuries 40.

Alliance with Sora

Following the Uchiha victory over Kumogakure’s invasion force, Orochimaru approached Sora through Kakashi. He hoped to identify someone Sora wanted resurrected and use that attachment as leverage, while seeking access to Akainu’s tissue. Sora instead offered a prospective division of Pain’s Rinnegan—one eye each—and requested help locating Kimimaro and another captive of the Kaguya clan 70 71.

Their arrangement gave Orochimaru access to slain or captured Kumogakure shinobi for research. He observed Sora’s destruction of the village through a white snake carrying his consciousness 77.

At Naka Shrine, Sora marked Orochimaru’s shadow clone with Heavenly Imprint. When the mark transferred to his original body and began influencing his urge to approach Sora, Orochimaru confronted him and demanded its removal. The offer of interworld travel and borrowed power persuaded him to join Sora’s side and test the mark in the Sea Realm 111 112.

Sea Realm research

In the East Blue, Orochimaru considered joining the New Navy but avoided it because of Akainu’s sensory abilities. He instead pursued research independently, trapping Buggy and dissecting him to investigate the Chop-Chop Fruit’s unusual effects 116 117.

After experiencing a small permanent benefit from a power loan, he sought to establish a company as a fast way to accumulate reputation. Sora also tasked him with finding the Uzumaki Clan Mask Hall and breaking the Dead Demon Consuming Seal to enable Minato’s return 118.

Working with Aramaki and Sea Realm Lineage Factor technology, Orochimaru cultivated a powerful vessel from Hashirama’s cells. His research also combined Caesar Clown’s and Vinsmoke’s work with ninjutsu and produced a partial extraction of Kurozumi Orochi’s fruit abilities 143 144.

Return to Konoha and Akatsuki negotiations

Orochimaru accompanied Sora back to Konoha, wanting to demonstrate that Hiruzen had been wrong not to choose him as Hokage. He summoned Hashirama, Tobirama, and Minato through Impure World Reincarnation, then asserted that he could control Tobirama even though Hashirama was beyond his control 144 147 149.

He later participated in the Land of Fire’s governing council and offered to negotiate the Land of Rain’s merger into it. Although still an Akatsuki member, he supplied the loan platform with the organization’s intelligence and continued trading research benefits for its funding and assistance 188 191.

With Minato accompanying him, Orochimaru approached Amegakure openly and explained to Konan that the Fourth Hokage had genuinely returned to life, rather than merely being summoned as a reincarnated dead man 191.

Appearance

  • Pale complexion and purple eyeshadow, accompanied by dark golden, vertically slit pupils 31 71.
  • Serpentine expressions and movements, including a cold snake-like smile and a mouth capable of opening far beyond normal human limits 31 39.
  • Highly extensible neck, stretched dozens of meters during his fight with Akainu 36.
  • Sharp snake fangs, revealed when he prepared to test his cursed seal on Buggy 117.
  • Black cloak with red clouds while serving in Akatsuki 40.

Personality

Orochimaru’s central ambition is to attain eternal life and understand the truth of all things. Minato’s death reinforces his belief that even exceptional people are vulnerable to the brevity and unpredictability of human life. He values powerful bloodlines, unusual bodies, and unfamiliar energy systems as research opportunities 31 37 71.

His cooperation is transactional. He demands funding and experimental subjects from Danzō, covets Pain’s Rinnegan while benefiting from Akatsuki’s resources, and considers abandoning Sasori if Rayquaza appears. His report to Pain demonstrates a preference for misleading truths over easily exposed lies 31 35 40 71.

Despite his fascination with dangerous experiments, he is cautious about opponents he cannot reliably overcome. He abandons efforts to defeat Akainu, questions whether he and Sora can take Pain’s eyes, and initially attends the Uchiha gathering through a shadow clone rather than risk his original body 37 71 111.

He fiercely rejects interference with his own will. On discovering Heavenly Imprint’s influence, he considers killing himself and resurrecting through Anko preferable to accepting mental control. Later, exposure to infinite dimensions diminishes his hatred of Konoha: pity for those unaware of that wider reality begins to outweigh resentment 112 188.

Abilities & Skills

Immortality and bodily replacement

  • Heaven-Earth Curse Mark: Provides a foundation for resurrection. A successfully implanted mark and living cells can be used to restore Orochimaru 112.
  • Replacement bodies: During the Akainu battle, another Orochimaru emerges from a slain body; even incineration can be followed by his reappearance from a nearby snake 37.
  • Regeneration: Charred scabs fall away and new flesh grows after his return to Akatsuki 40.
  • Limits: Sora identifies sealing techniques and Mangekyō genjutsu as effective against him. His ability to survive defeat does not make him immune to injury or capture 37 40.

Snake techniques and summons

  • Snake-mediated movement: Emerges from a white snake’s mouth at Danzō’s residence and later dissolves into a white snake when leaving 31.
  • Remote observation: Places his consciousness in a white snake to witness Sora’s Kumogakure campaign 77.
  • Manda: Summons the giant serpent of Ryūchi Cave. Manda demands one hundred living sacrifices as payment 39.
  • Ninpō: Mandara Formation: Releases an enormous swarm of snakes, used to obstruct his enemies long enough to escape 39.
  • Ryūchi Cave extraction plan: Considers having its snakes summon him away after obtaining a tissue sample from Akainu; this is a proposed escape method, not a confirmed success 37.

Ninjutsu and sword control

  • Earth Style defenses: Raises several thick barriers against Akainu’s magma-infused slash, though the attack destroys them 35.
  • Elemental versatility: Akainu finds his range of elemental techniques more complex than the Devil Fruit users he knows 37.
  • Sora’s Tachi: Secret technique used to control the Kusanagi Sword remotely, making it appear to fight on its own 67.
  • Extended reach: Combines the sword’s extension with his elongated neck to attack across dozens of meters 36.
  • Shadow Clone Technique: Uses a clone for negotiations at Naka Shrine, keeping his original body away from the gathered Uchiha 111.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Acquisition: Takes a copied version of the forbidden technique when leaving Konoha 70.
  • Early limitations: Initially uses it mainly as research reference and says the reincarnated dead are weaker than their sacrifices 70.
  • Improvement: Works under Sora’s pressure and shares part of his research with Akatsuki to accelerate development 111 191.
  • Demonstrated summons: Reincarnates the First, Second, and Fourth Hokages during Sora’s return to Konoha 147.
  • Control limits: Can restrain Tobirama but acknowledges that controlling Hashirama is beyond him 149.

Genetic engineering and Devil Fruit research

  • Hashirama vessel: Cultivates a body from Hashirama’s cells with Aramaki’s assistance and Lineage Factor technology 143.
  • Zoan extraction: Separates part of Kurozumi Orochi’s soul to acquire some Snake-Snake Fruit power; further purification requires time and preservation of his sole test subject 144.
  • Paramecia and Logia research: Describes their powers as more conceptual and identifies Lineage Factor as a route to replication 144.
  • Experimental subjects: Studies Buggy’s survival while separated into hundreds of pieces and considers whether his vitality can withstand a cursed seal 117.
  • Laboratory design: Uses underground facilities to isolate temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure, improving the reliability of long-term genetic experiments 143.

Heavenly Imprint and power loans

  • Interworld access: Sora’s mark permits travel to the Sea Realm and access to otherworldly power loans 112.
  • Payment requirement: Borrowed power has a price; Sora states that Orochimaru could even summon him if he could afford it 112.
  • Persistent benefit: A completed loan produces a small improvement in Orochimaru’s physique 118.
  • Mark resistance: Sealing attempts and removal of the marked flesh fail to erase Heavenly Imprint 112.
  • Will interference: The mark draws him toward Sora when Sora initiates a summon. Sora claims it cannot compel self-harming actions, but Orochimaru disputes the safety of approaching him involuntarily 112.
  • Loan brokerage: Persuades Minato to sign a fifty-credibility-point loan agreement and provides Akatsuki intelligence as a bonus 188.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Chakra-metal-containing blade with exceptional hardness and extension capability; can be spat from his mouth and controlled through Sora’s Tachi 28 36 67.
  • Copied Konoha forbidden techniques — Research materials taken during his defection, including Impure World Reincarnation 70.
  • Hashirama-cell vessel — Laboratory-grown body held in a nutrient tank, prepared to receive Hashirama’s summoned soul 143.
  • Sea Realm research equipment — Uses stolen equipment during his dissection of Buggy 117.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Sora — Initially a target, later his patron and dominant collaborator. Sora calls Orochimaru a teacher in recognition of the techniques that inspired his own developments, while using Heavenly Imprint to bring him into the loan system 31 112.
  • Uchiha Shisui — Former wartime subordinate. Shisui fears his cruelty but admires the military judgment behind his orders; they later work within Sora’s faction 34 139.
  • Shimura Danzō — Research sponsor and conspiratorial partner who commissions the attack on Sora in exchange for funding, intelligence, and subjects 31.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher. Orochimaru’s resentment over being passed over for Hokage drives his wish to prove Hiruzen’s choice wrong 31 144.
  • Jiraiya and Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and old friends. Jiraiya once sought to persuade him to return rather than kill him; Tsunade condemns his submission to the Uchiha during the Konoha confrontation 113 149.
  • Pain / Nagato — Akatsuki leader and prospective Rinnegan target. Orochimaru benefits from his organization but doubts his own ability to defeat him 71 188.
  • Konan — Akatsuki funding contact and later technology-trade partner. He negotiates over physical-enhancement research and explains Minato’s resurrection to her 71 188 191.
  • Sasori — Akatsuki teammate marked by mutual contempt. Orochimaru conceals the circumstances of his capture when reporting him dead 35 40.
  • Akainu / Sakazuki — Overwhelming opponent and coveted research subject. Orochimaru escapes their battle and later avoids the New Navy because of Akainu’s sensory abilities 37 39 116.
  • Anko — Potential resurrection route through his cursed mark. Orochimaru considers using her to escape Heavenly Imprint’s influence 112.
  • Namikaze Minato — Respected genius despite their Hokage rivalry; later a reincarnation subject, loan customer, and companion on the Amegakure diplomatic mission 31 147 188 191.
  • Aramaki — Research collaborator who helps develop the Hashirama-cell vessel 143.

Trivia

  • The “Orochimaru” who leaves a message for Chiyo at Sunagakure is actually Sora using a transformation. Orochimaru does not personally arrange that Heaven and Earth Bridge meeting 41.
  • Sora draws on Orochimaru’s Eight Branches Technique when addressing energy overload, copies his traits into Ryuzuki, and uses his techniques as inspiration for Heavenly Imprint 112.
  • Jiraiya suspects that Orochimaru’s unusual, seemingly living chakra might indicate Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode, but the passage does not confirm that identification 147.
