Background / History
Konoha researcher
Orochimaru was the only Sannin still in Konoha when Jiraiya and Tsunade had left to wander the world. His work focused on modifying ninja bodies, surpassing human biological limits, and ultimately achieving immortality 23 101.
He maintained an underground laboratory outside the village, keeping his expensive equipment there because his human experiments risked exposure. Living subjects were held in nutrient-filled containers with oxygen masks and monitoring tubes. Orochimaru justified their suffering as a necessary sacrifice for technological progress 102.
Ryūchi Cave encounter
Near Ryūchi Cave, Orochimaru recognized Shinji and Rin from intelligence reports and attacked them to test their strength. Rin beheaded him, but he immediately produced another head and a serpentine body, then counterattacked with the Sky Katana 96 99.
Shinji took over the fight and proved faster than Orochimaru. After losing his right arm and facing complete freezing, Orochimaru escaped through the Ten Thousand Snake Mandala Reincarnation Technique. Exhausted, he acknowledged Shinji’s superiority and proposed cooperation 97 98 99 100.
During their journey to his laboratory, the two exchanged ninjutsu insights. Orochimaru subsequently offered Living Corpse Reincarnation in return for learning how Shinji had mastered Sage Mode so quickly. He presented a youthful-looking test subject whom he claimed had originally been older than all three visitors 101 102 103.
Root raid and defection
Orochimaru brought a disguised Shinji into Root’s underground laboratory through its identity-verification procedures. After Danzō warned him against coveting the research materials, Orochimaru attacked the surrounding Root ninjas with Myriad Snake Formation 148.
The two escaped with research and exchanged experimental data. Orochimaru traded his Hashirama Cell research for Shinji’s Sage Spirit Cursed Seal, then successfully entered Sage Mode. With this objective achieved, he announced his intention to leave Konoha and seek a nation to rule 152 153.
Konoha’s Anbu concluded that Orochimaru had stolen Root’s research and defected. The Third Hokage and Minato suppressed the human-experimentation scandal temporarily while preparing to arrest him. Jiraiya pursued his former friend independently, but Orochimaru escaped north after Shinji disrupted the confrontation 154 156.
Pursuit of Sasuke
Orochimaru’s Sharingan research initially prioritized Itachi and Shisui, but their secret missions made them difficult to approach. After studying ordinary Uchiha jōnin, he concluded that bloodline talent was central to the eyes’ power and selected Sasuke as a more accessible prospect 190 197.
Disguised as a Kusagakure genin, he confronted Sasuke, Naruto, and Hinata during Sunagakure’s Joint Chūnin Exams. He tested their responses to killing intent and ninjutsu, interrupted Naruto’s attempt to summon Gamabunta, and abducted Sasuke inside a giant snake 198 199 200.
Orochimaru beat and taunted Sasuke, intending to cultivate him into a suitable body for Living Corpse Reincarnation rather than simply extract his eyes. The technique’s unresolved damage to spiritual power prevented an immediate takeover. Before retreating from Shinji’s intervention, he left Sasuke with a cursed seal and later requested that Shinji spare the boy during the impending operation 200 201 202.
The plan backfired: Sasuke became interested in Shinji’s strength, sought admission to the Ninjutsu Sect, and received a Sage Spirit Cursed Seal in place of Orochimaru’s seal 201 223 224.
Land of Birds infiltration
While Shinji attended the Five Kage Summit, Orochimaru infiltrated the Land of Birds to abduct Sasuke. He used the Vanishing Facial Copy Technique and watched Sasuke and Gaara for several days, hoping to seize Sasuke without exposing his identity 250 251.
Avian Ninja Beasts detected the suspicious outsider, allowing Rin to track and confront him. Orochimaru abandoned cooperation with the Ninjutsu Sect Office and attacked, but Rin repeatedly defeated his assaults. Even his Sage Mode and chakra-adapted snakes failed to secure Sasuke 251 253.
His final attempt to merge with Sasuke through a white snake was stopped by Haku’s concealed Ice Release attack. Rin vaporized Orochimaru’s body, and the Sky Katana was recovered and awarded to Sasuke 255.
Rebirth and later alliances
Orochimaru survived through Soul Transfer Jutsu and was reborn in Otogakure. Weakened and deprived of Sage Mode, he went into hiding, left Kabuto in charge of his ninjas, and sent him to Amegakure to approach Nagato 256.
Through Kabuto, he offered to heal Nagato and enhance his power using Hashirama Cells. He later treated Nagato’s hidden injuries and cooperated with him specifically to turn him against Shinji. During their discussions, Orochimaru suggested that Impure World Reincarnation could explain how Madara might remain active despite his age 257 304.
In the finale, Sasuke joined Orochimaru after again leaving Konoha. Orochimaru offered to enhance Sasuke’s Rinnegan with Hashirama’s cells; their alliance rested on shared opposition to Shinji, though Orochimaru retained his own concealed motives 328.
Appearance
Orochimaru is tall and thin, with an unnaturally pale complexion, long black hair, and narrow eyes with yellow-green slit pupils. At Ryūchi Cave, he wears wooden sandals and a loose white kimono with blue trim 96.
- Tongue: Unnaturally long and thin; he frequently uses it to lick his lips 148 197.
- Voice: Male, but described as feminine, sinister, and eerie 197.
- Serpentine form: Can emerge as a human-headed creature with a long snake body 96 151.
- Sage Mode: Skin becomes chalk-white, scales appear on his cheeks, pupils turn crimson, and his hair becomes numerous small black venomous snakes. His elemental spirit snake also turns white and develops scales 153 253.
- After rebirth: Wears a loose kimono over a heavily bandaged body, with only his yellow-green eyes visible 256.
Personality
Orochimaru pursues knowledge without accepting ordinary ethical restraints. He treats human suffering as an acceptable cost of progress and remains smiling while experimental subjects struggle in pain. His pride in advanced equipment and fascination with unfamiliar techniques accompany this disregard for his victims 98 102 103.
He is calculating and adaptable, but his habit of testing opponents can expose him to dangers he initially underestimates. When Shinji nearly kills him, he shifts from combat to negotiation rather than insisting on a hopeless duel. Later, fear of Shinji does not stop him from risking an infiltration to obtain Sasuke 99 100 250.
His loyalties are conditional. He betrays Danzō, severs cooperation with the Ninjutsu Sect Office when it obstructs his ambitions, and uses Nagato’s hostility toward Shinji to advance his own interests. Nevertheless, leaving Konoha evokes genuine melancholy, and Nagato’s trustworthiness earns an unusual measure of admiration 148 153 251 304.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Summoning and Modification
Orochimaru holds a summoning contract with Ryūchi Cave. His combat snakes are summoned creatures whose capabilities can be altered through his secret techniques, rather than naturally possessing every ability they display 96 97 98.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases venomous snakes from his sleeves to bite and bind targets. Its later improved version is fast and durable enough to resist Sasuke’s sword 96 251.
- Rock-Breaking Green Snake: Summons six fast green snakes while he simultaneously attacks with his sword 97.
- Scorching Flame Red Python: Produces a giant flaming python. It exhausts Shinji’s six Ice Crystal Snakes, but is itself frozen 98.
- Scorching Flame Red Snake: Creates a defensive net of fire-charged venomous snakes; Shinji’s Ice Release tears through it 99.
- Myriad Snake Formation: Unleashes hundreds of blue-black venomous snakes against surrounding enemies 148.
- Giant snakes: Used to surround opponents, interrupt summoning, swallow Sasuke, and transport him underground 199 200.
Regeneration and Shedding
Orochimaru’s modified body survives injuries that would kill an ordinary human. He recovers from decapitation and emerges uninjured after Shinji slams him into the ground 96 97.
- Produces a new head and serpentine torso from his apparently dead body 96.
- Crawls out through his mouth in a fresh body, abandoning one threatened by freezing 98.
- Uses a white snake substitute to evade Rin’s lethal sword strike 253.
- Ten Thousand Snake Mandala Reincarnation Technique: Explodes the doomed body into venom and countless small snakes, which gather and reconstruct Orochimaru elsewhere. The escape leaves him severely depleted 99 100.
Body Possession and Soul Survival
Orochimaru researches Living Corpse Reincarnation as an “Art of Immortality,” seeking to occupy another body and inherit its advantages 102 200.
- Plans to cultivate Sasuke before possessing him, preserving both the Sharingan and its compatible Uchiha body 200.
- His research weakens his spiritual power, creating an obstacle to Sage Mode and delaying his intended use of Living Corpse Reincarnation 153 200.
- Keeps talented kidnapped ninjas at his strongholds and places special cursed seals on selected subjects, preparing replacement bodies if his current form dies 256.
- Soul Transfer Jutsu: Enables his rebirth after Rin destroys his body. Haku initially suspects Soul Splitting, and Shinji subsequently confirms that Orochimaru had put it into practice 255 256 257.
- Rebirth costs him much of his strength and requires a lengthy recovery 256.
Sage Mode
Shinji’s Sage Spirit Cursed Seal gives Orochimaru an Earth Release spirit snake that assists in absorbing and balancing natural energy. Orochimaru demonstrates exceptional control once the seal compensates for his soul-related weakness 153.
- Sage Art: Myriad Serpent Killing Formation: Surrounds the battlefield with white snakes and provides cover for his movements 253.
- Sage Art: Serpent Refining Technique: Infuses snakes with a chosen chakra attribute; he uses it to adapt them to Rin’s Fire Release chakra 253.
- Limitation: The enabling seal is attached to his body. Its destruction leaves his reborn form unable to enter Sage Mode 256.
Elemental Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Intimidation
Orochimaru has mastered all chakra natures, with Earth Release being his most frequently used nature 153.
- Water Release: Water Formation Wave: Expels a high-pressure torrent from his mouth 199.
- Genjutsu: Suppresses a test subject’s pain and induces a calm, vacant state before interrogation 103.
- Killing intent: Temporarily immobilizes Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata. Sasuke overcomes it through pain, while Naruto breaks free through willpower 198 199.
- Vanishing Facial Copy Technique: Changes his face for infiltration, though his distinctive aura and eyes can still reveal his identity 251.
Research and Intelligence
Orochimaru specializes in biological modification, forbidden arts, and ninjutsu development. His work provides information valuable enough for Shinji to exchange the Sage Spirit Cursed Seal for his Hashirama Cell research 100 101 152.
- Uses Hashirama Cells to treat Nagato’s hidden injuries 304.
- Studies Sharingan transplantation and recognizes its burden on non-Uchiha hosts 197 200 304.
- Deduces that Pain is a puppet and Nagato is the concealed Rinnegan wielder through observation and historical intelligence 257.
- Understands Impure World Reincarnation, although the supplied context does not show him performing it 304.
- Acknowledges that Shinji and his research team have surpassed his own forbidden-arts research 304.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sky Katana: One of the ten Kusanagi Swords. A double-edged longsword that can extend and retract; Orochimaru wields it by hand or from his mouth. Its durability rivals Rin’s True Flame Tachi. Rin gives it to Sasuke after destroying Orochimaru’s body 96 97 255.
- Sage Spirit Cursed Seal: Implanted near his shoulder blade and linked to an Earth Release spirit snake. Lost with his original body 153 256.
- Laboratory equipment: Nutrient containers, oxygen masks, monitoring devices, and experimental records stored outside Konoha 102.
- Chūnin Exam disguise: Conical hat, earth-colored robes, and a Kusagakure forehead protector 197.
- Scroll of Earth: Swallows it to challenge Naruto’s team to kill him for the scroll they need 198.
