Ordinary boys would always come over to comfort Saegusa Mayumi when she looked like that, apologizing without even thinking twice.
But Kudo Mitsunobu wasn't affected by her Magic Face, and at this point, he had little interest in wasting time cheering her up.
Watching Kudo Mitsunobu walk off without a second thought, Saegusa Mayumi stopped pretending to be angry.
A faint smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
Kudo Mitsunobu didn't head straight back to his classroom. Instead, he went directly to the Practical Simulation Test Room.
That was why he hadn't been in a hurry to return to class at lunchtime. For the practical test, students only needed to be present when their turn came.
Of course, Saegusa Mayumi was taking the same class.
After enrolling in Magic High School, both Course 1 and Course 2 Students regularly took practical tests, usually about twice a week.
These tests served a purpose: they let students clearly see whether their magic skills had improved.
"{200ms}, Mitsunobu, your magic activation speed is still astonishing."
The teacher in charge of the test beamed as he spoke, looking as though Kudo Mitsunobu's results had something to do with him.
It wasn't entirely wrong of him to think so. When the principal had called for a vote on whether Kudo Mitsunobu should join the Student Council, he had been among those who voted in favor. The better Kudo Mitsunobu did, the more it proved his decision had been right, so he naturally felt proud.
"Not at all. Thank you for the praise, Sensei. It was nothing."
Kudo Mitsunobu bowed politely, then stepped down from the testing platform. There were other students waiting to take their turns.
"Thanks for your hard work, Mitsunobu."
A broad, imposing figure blocked Kudo Mitsunobu's way. It was Jumonji Katsuto.
"So the class testing in the room next door today is yours, Jumonji-senpai!"
Kudo Mitsunobu had finished all three tests, and he had nothing else scheduled. He followed Jumonji Katsuto and took a seat with him.
"Did you want to talk to me about something, Jumonji-senpai?"
As soon as they sat down, Kudo Mitsunobu asked Jumonji Katsuto. They weren't close enough to chat for no reason; usually, they only sought each other out when there was something to discuss.
"Don't be so serious. It's nothing important."
"I just heard that your class was in the room next door, so I came over for a chat."
"I see. What would you like to talk about, Jumonji-senpai?"
"Nothing much. I just wanted to discuss Blanche's recent activities at school."
As soon as Jumonji Katsuto finished speaking, a blue hemispherical dome enveloped them, forming a barrier much like a soundproofing field.
I didn't expect Jumonji Katsuto to be able to use magic similar to the Juyama Family's.
Kudo Mitsunobu thought this to himself, but outwardly he put on an admiring expression.
"Impressive as always, Jumonji-senpai. But this soundproofing barrier doesn't work quite like an ordinary one, does it?"
Jumonji Katsuto gave Kudo Mitsunobu an approving glance before replying.
"That's right. An ordinary soundproofing barrier uses vibration magic to cancel out sound. It doesn't stop outside sounds from reaching those inside."
"My barrier simply increases the density of the wall. Our voices can't get out, and outside sounds can't get in."
"In that case, let me set up the barrier instead. It would be troublesome not to receive any information from outside."
Jumonji Katsuto nodded, and Kudo Mitsunobu took over.
"That should do it. You wanted to ask me how to deal with Blanche, right, Jumonji-senpai?"
"Exactly."
"I'm not particularly interested in them. Besides, most of what we've heard about Blanche's activities at school is based on deductions from the clues we have."
"There's no concrete evidence, so there aren't many avenues we can investigate."
"I suggest we wait for now. If they're plotting something, they won't just keep making small, meaningless moves like this."
"Once they slip up, we can wipe them out and arrest them all at once."
That was Kudo Mitsunobu's original plan. If not for his conversation with Shiba Tatsuya at lunchtime, he wouldn't even have asked anyone to investigate.
"Is that what you think, too?"
"At least, I think it's the most appropriate solution."
Kudo Mitsunobu shrugged.
"I see. Then let's do that."
Just as they were about to end the conversation, say their goodbyes, and leave, a shrill sound blared from the loudspeaker on the wall.
Kudo Mitsunobu immediately took down the soundproofing barrier, wanting to see what was going on.
"Students of the school, we are the League of Aspiring Individuals, an organization dedicated to abolishing discrimination on campus."
"We demand that the Student Council, the Disciplinary Committee, and the Club Alliance negotiate with us as equals."
Hearing the announcement over the loudspeaker, Kudo Hironobu let out a scornful laugh.
"Jumonji-senpai, it seems they've just shown us their hand."
The Nine Schools Competition arc is coming up soon. I'll wrap up the Enrollment Arc in about ten chapters.
I only have four chapters saved up right now, hahaha.
