"Yes!"
"The entrance exam at our school determines a student's status for their entire three years, correct?"
"We only need to change one of the rules slightly to make the school function like a normal one, Senior."
"Could it be..."
Saegusa Mayumi was, after all, born into the Saegusa Family, and her father was renowned for his strategic mind; it was impossible for her intelligence to be lacking.
Naturally, she had already deduced what it was that Kudo Mitsunobu was suggesting they change.
"Exactly."
Kudo Mitsunobu nodded with a smile.
"Isn't there a final exam at the end of every semester? Those who perform well among the Course 2 students are promoted to Course 1, and those who perform poorly among the Course 1 students are demoted to Course 2."
"This way, Course 1 students will fear being overtaken by Course 2 students, terrified of becoming the very 'second-class' students they once looked down upon, and will work hard at their magic."
"And Course 2 students will strive to shed their label as 'waste' and fight for better treatment, working just as hard to become Course 1 students."
"What do you think, Senior?"
Kudo Mitsunobu spread his hands, smiling as he looked at Saegusa Mayumi.
Saegusa Mayumi's expression shifted from contemplation to delight, then, after a brief moment, settled into a calm composure before she shook her head and spoke.
"Junior Mitsunobu, a magic high school is different from a normal school."
"Students in ordinary schools can achieve results through greater effort than the average person, but mages are different. In the world of magic, innate talent determines everything."
Indeed, in the world of magic, innate talent determined everything.
However, magical aptitude was a fragile thing; students could easily be forced to drop out if an accident rendered them unable to use magic.
That was the origin of the [Course 2] system; Course 2 students existed to fill the vacancies created by such accidents.
That was the reason Course 2 students were considered backups for Course 1.
"Therefore, it is fundamentally impossible for a Course 2 student to become a Course 1 student. The rare case of one succeeding every two or three years is hardly persuasive."
Kudo Mitsunobu raised a finger and shook it. "Saegusa Senior, surely you aren't saying you don't know how to use a few minor tricks?"
"You mean?"
He couldn't tell if this senior was playing dumb, but he didn't believe for a second that Saegusa Mayumi was someone who wouldn't know how to handle such a situation.
Kudo Mitsunobu sighed and glanced around to ensure no one was nearby.
After all, this wasn't the sort of thing that should be overheard; it was better to be a little cautious.
Chapter 3: The Exquisite Doll
Still, just to be safe, Kudo Mitsunobu activated the earring on his right lobe, which emitted a faint blue glow, casting a sound-insulating barrier made of Psions around the two of them.
"That was fast magic activation."
Saegusa Mayumi's beautiful eyes flickered; he was truly worthy of being the leader of the younger generation of the Kudo Family.
Kudo Mitsunobu looked at Saegusa Mayumi and began to speak.
"Then let me explain my method. Your family should have several branches that aren't publicly declared, right?"
Saegusa Mayumi nodded silently.
Every magic family had such arrangements; these branches served as the private forces of the main house.
"Have the children from those families hold back during the entrance exam, and then have them successfully promote to Course 1 during the major exams in their second or third year. This shouldn't be difficult for you, Senior, right?"
Saegusa Mayumi couldn't help but fall into deep thought. In truth, the method Kudo Mitsunobu proposed was the very same one she had conceived.
As the eldest daughter of the Saegusa Family, how could she not understand such simple political maneuvering?
In fact, the moment Kudo Mitsunobu provided his line of reasoning, this was the first solution that had surfaced in her mind.
She had simply wanted to see if Kudo Mitsunobu's approach matched her own.
"Hmm?"
Kudo Mitsunobu noticed a girl, shorter than Saegusa Mayumi, rushing directly toward them.
Kudo Mitsunobu quickly dispelled the sound-insulating barrier surrounding them.
"Saegusa Senior, it seems your friend is coming over."
Kudo Mitsunobu hurriedly reminded Saegusa Mayumi, who was still lost in thought.
Distracted, Saegusa Mayumi quickly looked up, waved at the petite girl rushing toward her, and offered a knowing smile.
"President, why are you still here?"
The girl's voice was soft and sweet, like a wounded little animal; just standing there, she gave off an aura that made one want to tease her.
"Junior Mitsunobu, let me introduce you. This is our Student Council Secretary, Nakajo Azusa."
"Commonly known as Azusa-chan."
Saegusa Mayumi walked over to Nakajo Azusa, patted her head, and said with a mischievous grin.
Before Kudo Mitsunobu could even say anything, Nakajo Azusa's pink cheeks puffed up at a speed visible to the naked eye, making her look exactly like an enraged pufferfish.
Her two small hands flailed up and down incessantly.
"President, please don't call me Azusa-chan in front of the underclassmen; I have a reputation as a senior to maintain."
Although the petite senior tried her best to maintain a senior-like demeanor in front of Kudo Mitsunobu, in his eyes, she looked more like a small animal.
A rabbit, perhaps!
Though Kudo Mitsunobu thought this to himself, his etiquette remained flawless.
"Hello, Senior Nakajo."
"My name is Kudo Mitsunobu. I look forward to working with you."
