"I personally think you've already done quite well; at the very least, your strength has completely exceeded the scope of what a high school student should possess."
A hint of bitterness touched the corners of Saegusa Mayumi's mouth. Originally, she had been quite confident in her own strength; even against those long-renowned A-rank magicians, she would have dared to pat her chest and declare she could win.
Since she had entered the school, she and Jumonji Katsuto, hailed as the rising star of the Jumonji House, had traded victories and defeats.
But ever since she met Kudo Mitsunobu, she felt her confidence being shattered bit by bit by the boy before her.
This, of course, was not just in terms of magical prowess, but in every aspect.
For instance, while Saegusa Mayumi was relatively skilled in the practical application of magic, her engineering and technical abilities, though excellent, still could not compare to those who specialized in such fields, like Ichihara Suzune or Nakajo Azusa.
The casting and usage of A-rank magic were not difficult tasks for Saegusa Mayumi, but that was beside the point.
But what about Kudo Mitsunobu, who stood before her? He possessed immense power, was already capable of designing superior finished CAD products, and could simultaneously create new types of A-rank magic—this was simply beyond the scope of humanity!
"It's alright, I suppose."
Kudo Mitsunobu accepted Saegusa Mayumi's praise as a matter of course.
"But Mayumi, don't you need to practice for the Nine Schools Competition?"
"If you aren't fully prepared and end up losing the chance for a triple crown, don't come crying to me then!"
Kudo Mitsunobu spoke to Saegusa Mayumi in a teasing tone.
"Is that so? Then would you like to test whether my strength has weakened?"
Both of them enjoyed this way of interacting, or perhaps it was simply that their personalities were very similar.
"I'll have to respectfully decline that."
Kudo Mitsunobu shook his head hurriedly. He had no desire to be on the receiving end of a frantic barrage of dry ice bullets for no reason. If he could fight back, it would be one thing, but the problem was that he didn't dare to retaliate at all and would just be beaten for nothing.
"Hmph!"
Saegusa Mayumi gave a light huff, then continued.
"Regardless, you shouldn't use that magic when practicing Ice Pillar Break in the future. It's a real hassle for me to keep applying to the department head to have the arena repaired."
"The department head has already told me that if you destroy the arena this severely again, you'll have to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket."
As Saegusa Mayumi spoke, she mimicked the tone of the department head, who was only just past fifty but already had very little hair left on his head.
"Is that so!"
Kudo Mitsunobu nodded indifferently. After all, the practice arena didn't have to be at school, and besides, even if he had to pay damages, such a sum meant nothing to him.
Although this training hadn't been enough to make Kudo Mitsunobu break a sweat, he still went to the shower room for a quick rinse.
"Have you decided to sign up for Ice Pillar Break and Speed Shooting?"
"Actually, Monolith Code is much more eye-catching when it comes to the men's events."
Saegusa Mayumi asked as they headed toward the Student Council room. She still remembered that Kudo Mitsunobu bore the task of shining brightly at the Nine Schools Competition!
"It can't be helped. If Monolith Code were a singles format, I would have chosen to participate. Among the Course 1 Students, I feel that only Jumonji could coordinate with me."
Kudo Mitsunobu was also in a difficult position regarding this situation. The quality of the male students among this year's Course 1 Students was truly a bit low and simply could not compare to the female side.
Monolith Code was a three-person team event, and aside from Jumonji, he didn't believe anyone could keep up with him.
"What's more, Third High School has the Bloody Prince of the Ichijo House this year. Even I wouldn't be able to quickly finish him off in a short time while restricted from using high-lethality magic."
"In a three-on-two situation, I don't think my victory would feel like a crushing one."
As Kudo Mitsunobu spoke, he noticed that after hearing his words, Saegusa Mayumi was covering her mouth to stifle a laugh, her shoulders trembling as she struggled to keep from making a sound.
"Is there something funny?"
Saegusa Mayumi shook her head, her long eyelashes drooping over her eyes, a trace of lingering amusement still on her lips.
"Well, Mitsunobu, you really are confident in your own strength! If the prince of the Ichijo House heard you, he would probably be very angry!"
"It can't be helped. The Ichijo House's magic, Baryon Lance, manipulates the body fluids within a person, but even if I stood right in front of him, it would be fundamentally impossible for him to lock onto my position."
"This is a matter of magical compatibility."
"As for using other counter-magic, I don't think Ichijo Masaki knows more counter-magic than I do."
The words Kudo Mitsunobu spoke were not born of blind arrogance, but based on rational, logical analysis.
The magic he had already mastered could be said to have reached a level that could not even be contained by two general-purpose CADs. [A general-purpose CAD has a storage capacity of approximately 99 magic sequences.]
This was also the reason he carried three CADs with him year-round.
"But if you don't participate in Monolith Code, won't people think you're avoiding Ichijo Masaki?"
What Saegusa Mayumi said made perfect sense, because compared to Ichijo Masaki, who had already carved out a name for himself, Kudo Mitsunobu had nothing worth noting before entering high school other than his excellent academic performance.
After all, in the eyes of those who didn't know the truth, Ichijo Masaki was certainly stronger, and Kudo Mitsunobu not participating in the highly competitive Monolith Code would be seen as fear.
"That won't happen. I think that besides Monolith Code, the only other event Ichijo Masaki will participate in is Ice Pillar Break."
"Ah!"
Kudo Mitsunobu's hint made Saegusa Mayumi react immediately.
"Is it because Baryon Lance is well-suited for Ice Pillar Break?"
"Exactly!"
