Chapter 37: A Technician Who Surpassed Silver

Kudo Mitsunobu calmed himself, then placed his hand on the bracelet-type CAD and began entering commands. It had been a long time since he'd used a CAD that required commands to be entered manually, so he felt a little out of practice.

A faint blue current appeared in front of Kudo Mitsunobu's fingers. Though it made no sound, the charred mark on the wall proved that he had successfully cast a spell.

"Mitsunobu, how do you feel?"

It was Saegusa Mayumi who spoke. As soon as Kudo Mitsunobu finished casting [Shock], she rushed straight into the testing room.

"Don't worry."

Kudo Mitsunobu first reassured Saegusa Mayumi, then explained to Jumonji Katsuto and the others, who were waiting expectantly for the results.

"The Magic Formula started up smoothly, and I didn't feel any discomfort. Even if I'd made the adjustments myself, I couldn't have done a better job."

No one present disagreed with Kudo Mitsunobu. Even the first-year student who'd been arguing with them had nothing to say.

They could all see clearly with their own eyes that the Magic Formula had run smoothly and the spell had been cast successfully. Besides, Kudo Mitsunobu showed no signs of discomfort.

That left them no room to insist that he was faking it.

"Then it's settled. Shiba will join the technical team and handle CAD adjustments for the male newcomers competing in the rookie event."

Jumonji Katsuto nodded with satisfaction, making the decision final.

However, he still wouldn't break the rules by letting Shiba Tatsuya handle the CADs for the second- and third-year main-event competitors.

"Sorry, Chairman, but I don't want Shiba Tatsuya adjusting my CAD."

Morisaki Shun jumped to his feet. Several other Course 1 Students competing in the main event, who were sitting with him, stood up as well.

"Chairman, we can't accept that either."

Their vehement protests made Jumonji Katsuto furrow his brow. Saegusa Mayumi and Watanabe Mari also looked troubled.

Under normal circumstances, Jumonji Katsuto would have reprimanded Morisaki Shun and the others for being unreasonable, then told them it was an order and they had to accept it.

But this was different. If competitors couldn't get along with the technicians adjusting their CADs, an accident was bound to happen.

But in the current situation, Shiba Tatsuya couldn't be assigned to adjust the female competitors' CADs either. As mentioned before, a magician's CAD was practically an extension of their entire being. Having a man handle the CADs of unmarried women would only cause even more resentment!

"President, please let Tatsuya handle my CAD!"

"Mine too!"

Mitsui Honoka and Kitayama Shizuku stood up and spoke firmly.

In the end, the people Shiba Tatsuya took on weren't limited to those three. After hesitating for a while, the remaining girls also asked to have him as their technician.

Saegusa Mayumi breathed a sigh of relief.

After all, it wouldn't do to waste resources by having Shiba Tatsuya serve as a technician for just one person.

After the meeting ended, the technicians took their respective teams to meet with them.

As for Kudo Mitsunobu and Saegusa Mayumi, who could adjust their own CADs perfectly well, there was nothing for them to do.

Saegusa Mayumi had wanted to take Kudo Mitsunobu out for a stroll, but he turned her down, saying he had something important to do.

He wasn't brushing her off. He really did have something to take care of. He was headed to the company he planned to establish after the Nine Schools Competition.

"Sorry, young master. You've had to come here in the blazing sun on a day like this."

The one waiting to greet him at the company entrance was Kuki Ken, the Kudomi Family's butler.

"I should be the one apologizing. I ought to be handling all this myself."

"Instead, I've left everything to you, Grandpa Kuki."

Kudo Mitsunobu scratched his head sheepishly.

"And, Grandpa Kuki, who is this?"

Kudo Mitsunobu had naturally noticed the man standing behind Kuki Ken.

He looked around twenty-four or twenty-five, and had a refined, scholarly air. He didn't look like the sort of magician who specialized in combat.

"This is my eldest grandson, Kuki Uichi."

"He graduated from Magic University last year. Since he isn't interested in combat, I thought I'd have him work at your company, young master."

"Feel free to put him to work however you like!"

"'Put him to work' sounds a bit harsh, Grandpa Kuki."

"Uichi, I'll be counting on you to handle the company's affairs from now on. I still have to attend school, after all, so I won't have much time to come here."

Kudo Mitsunobu said this to Kuki Uichi.

Kudo Mitsunobu immediately understood that his grandfather had to be behind this.

He'd heard Kudo Retsu talk about Kuki Uichi. Though Uichi hadn't pursued a career as a combat magician, even his grandfather had praised Uichi's skill in CAD development.

How could someone so talented be as unremarkable as Kuki Ken had made him sound?

This could only mean that Kudo Retsu had told the Kuki and Kudomi families that he would become the next head of the family.

The Kuki and Kudomi families had acknowledged Kudo Mitsunobu's abilities, so they'd brought their grandsons to pledge their allegiance to him.

It was something his biological father, Kudo Shingen, had spent his entire life trying and failing to accomplish.

There were two requirements for the Kuki and Kudomi families to swear allegiance to a Kudo family heir of the same generation.

First, Kudo Retsu had to acknowledge him.

Second, he had to earn the recognition of the Kuki and Kudomi families.
