First Appearance Chapter 12: We Are the Private Armed Force “Celestial Beings”

Background / History

Celestial Being emerged publicly in CE 71 through Luther Deikun's full-frequency broadcast following the destruction of Heliopolis. Calling itself a private armed organization, it declared its commitment to Zeon Zum Deikun's Newtype philosophy and denounced the war between PLANT and the Earth Alliance as contrary to that ideal. 12

During the broadcast, Celestial Being released surveillance footage and intelligence linking Orb, ZAFT, and the Earth Alliance to the Heliopolis incident. It exposed Orb's secret G-Series development for the Earth Alliance, criticized both belligerents for disregarding civilians, and accused Rau Le Creuset's team of conducting a prepared seizure operation. 12 13

Luther subsequently revealed the Coordinator fertility crisis and argued that neither Naturals nor Coordinators were humanity's true enemy. Instead, Celestial Being identified the military-industrial interests behind Logos, Blue Cosmos, and their agents as the forces perpetuating war and social division. 14

PLANT investigations found no trace of Celestial Being or Zeon Zum Deikun before CE 70. Investigators detected unknown encoded signals and gravitational-wave fluctuations near L2 on January 18, CE 71, then inferred that the force traveled through L4 before its flagship reached L3. 48 49 Celestial Being is later identified as a group of visitors from the UC World operating in the Cosmic Era. 130

Ideology and Objectives

Celestial Being's stated philosophy centers on humanity's eventual migration into space and evolution into Newtypes. It presents Newtypes as people with heightened intuition and intermittent precognitive perception, regarding their existence as evidence that Zeon Zum Deikun's prophecy will be fulfilled. 14

Its public platform includes:

  • Rejecting the division of humanity into Naturals and Coordinators. 14
  • Exposing and opposing war profiteers, particularly Logos and Blue Cosmos. 14
  • Pursuing those it holds responsible for the destruction of Heliopolis as war criminals. 15 134
  • Protecting civilians and noncombatants while mediating between hostile forces. 134
  • Building a new international order rather than merely ending the immediate war. 690
  • Expanding humanity's access to space and allowing Earth's ecology to recover. 14

“We are the private armed organization ‘Celestial Being,’ dedicated to realizing the Newtype philosophy of my father, Zeon Zum Deikun, and guiding all of humanity toward a brand-new era.” 12

Organization

Celestial Being is a small, tightly connected organization with a relatively flat and personable internal culture, though its members retain meaningful differences in class, authority, and responsibility. 927

Membership Classes

Class Description
Fourth-class citizens Outsiders under Celestial Being's strategic personnel system. 371 373
Third-class citizens Peripheral members. 372 373
Second-class citizens Full members, including those who arrived with the original group and peripheral members promoted through the formal process. Promotion requires Mika's approval and Monica's review. 372

Command Personnel

  • Luther Deikun — Commander-in-chief and public leader; directs strategy, diplomacy, and Newtype-related policy. 12 361
  • Teresa “Tessa” Testarossa — Fleet commander; commands the Gwameir and develops major campaign plans. 15 256
  • Aina Sahalin — Senior strategist involved in alliance policy and operational decision-making. 338
  • Monica Cadillac — Special Operations Captain; led the recovery and filtering of Heliopolis surveillance records and reviews applications for full membership. 13 372
  • Cima Garahau — Oversees Celestial Being's mobile suit forces while also serving as Luther's maid. 376
  • Ginias — Oversees mobile-weapon experimentation and modification projects at Mendel. 37

Military Assets

Fleet

Asset Description
Gwameir Celestial Being's large crimson flagship and supreme command center. It is a high-speed, long-endurance warship with three twin-mounted main beam guns and extensive close-in defenses. 54 136
Escort vessels Green light warships assessed by PLANT as broadly comparable to vessels between the Nazca and Laurasia classes. 49 54
Mendel Celestial Being's operational base and site for converting captured resources into further military strength. 36 64
Ptolemy Mobile suit carrier used to host formal discussions with Human Reform League representatives. 444

Mobile Weapons

  • High Mobility Zaku II — Celestial Being's mass-produced mobile suit. Its performance against Moebius units is roughly comparable to a Ginn, with some units performing better but not exceeding a CGUE. 54
  • Bigro Custom — Standard large mobile armor designed primarily for engaging warships, space fighters, and smaller mobile armors. It carries a high-powered beam weapon, quad missile launchers, configurable hardpoints, and multipurpose mechanical arms. 54 136
  • Newtype-use Bigro Custom — A Newtype-operated variant used by Haman Karn and later Cagalli Yula Athha. 31 134
  • Newtype-dedicated mobile weapons — Specialized machines and systems whose combat capability prompted ZAFT to seek comparable equipment of its own. 218

Technology

Minovsky Technology

Celestial Being employs Minovsky Particle technology, including Minovsky nuclear fusion reactors that remain functional despite neutron interference. The Gwameir disperses Minovsky Particles to conceal its movement and complicate enemy detection. 15 346 347

Natural-Compatible Operating System

Celestial Being developed a mobile suit operating system supported by an “action library,” allowing Naturals to imitate advanced control patterns with substantially reduced training demands. The system's effectiveness depends on access to the corresponding motion library. 234 421

  • Enables Naturals to become proficient with mobile suits after comparatively simple training. 421
  • Has been incorporated into mobile suits supplied through Orb. 686
  • Does not eliminate the value of customized libraries designed around particular pilots. 686

Newtype Technology

Celestial Being fields Newtype-exclusive systems, Bio-Sensor equipment, simulation pods, and specialized backpacks. Its technicians also provide Newtype-related equipment and support to allied factions. 36 420 769 908

  • Claims that Newtypes can perceive events across time to a limited and intermittent degree. 14
  • Uses Newtype-compatible equipment in mobile suits and mobile armors. 31 37
  • Provides foundational Newtype technologies to partners, raising suspicions regarding its long-term political aims. 417

Major Operations

Heliopolis Declaration

Celestial Being entered world affairs by broadcasting the destruction of Heliopolis and presenting evidence against Orb, ZAFT, and the Earth Alliance. It used the incident to establish public credibility and announce its ideological program. 12 13 14

Assault on Artemis Fortress

The Gwameir attacked Artemis Fortress to demonstrate Celestial Being's military power. Its enhanced main-cannon attack, the Spear of Divine Retribution, breached the fortress's Light Wave Defense Belt, an achievement previously believed impossible for a warship's main guns. 29 30 54

Celestial Being then deployed mass-produced mobile suits and Newtype-use mobile armors. Cima's forces were ordered to minimize unnecessary killing, disabling enemy weapons and propulsion where possible rather than destroying every target. 31

Pursuit of the Archangel

Celestial Being publicly declared that it would pursue the Archangel and Rau Le Creuset's team to bring them to trial over Heliopolis. The pursuit also served as a means of projecting power and establishing contact with outside factions. 15 36 43

Armed Intervention near Heliopolis

Celestial Being intervened in a confrontation between ZAFT and Earth Alliance forces, demanded a ceasefire, and called for an investigation into Heliopolis-related war crimes. It protected Lacus Clyne, George Allster, the Silver Wind, and a diplomatic shuttle while engaging the Vesalius. 134

Campaign Against Blue Cosmos

Celestial Being's leadership regarded its campaign against Blue Cosmos as critical to the organization's cause. The campaign relied on Tessa's battle planning and the communication network of the Junk Guild's “Professor” faction. 256

Orb's assistance through Morgenroete was considered a major factor in Celestial Being's successful defeat of Blue Cosmos. 338

External Relations

  • Orb Union — Celestial Being exposed Orb's role in the G-Series project but later developed cooperative ties with Orb through Cagalli and Morgenroete. Orb's support was instrumental against Blue Cosmos. 12 27 338
  • Cagalli Yula Athha — Volunteered to join Celestial Being after hearing its philosophy and rejecting Orb's wartime political conduct. 27
  • PLANT and the Clyne Faction — Initial contacts led to pragmatic technical exchanges; Lacus later formed an Anti-War United Front with Celestial Being and Orb. 50 136
  • ZAFT and the Zala Faction — The Zala Faction treats Celestial Being as an outside force, and its emergence deepened divisions between those willing to trust it and those who opposed it. 390
  • Earth Alliance — Celestial Being's relationship with the Alliance combines military confrontation, civilian protection, and unofficial diplomatic outreach through Deputy Foreign Minister George Allster. 88 90 92
  • Human Reform League — The two sides discussed deep cooperation, Newtype technology, Natural-compatible systems, and a proposed framework involving investment and L4 development rights. 410 421 444
  • Junk Guild — Served as an early channel for non-armed contact, technical exchanges, intelligence, and campaign communications. 50 256
  • Logos and Blue Cosmos — Publicly identified by Celestial Being as primary enemies responsible for sustaining war and persecution. 14

Trivia

  • PLANT's early estimate placed Celestial Being's overall military strength at only 10–30% of PLANT's, despite the force's outsized strategic impact. 50
  • Its sudden emergence, untraceable history, unfamiliar technology, and references to nonexistent people led outside observers to speculate that Celestial Being came from another world. 48 98
  • The organization has sold mobile weapons despite recognizing the risk of escalating conflict, treating arms trade as part of its broader strategic policy. 366 370
