Background / History
Kas is the last known descendant of the Zagwell Clan, a Rishiman clan of Her Tribe whose totem is the Golden-Branch Giant Antlered Deer. His father is Malik Axe-Breaker, while his mother’s identity and origins are uncertain; Kas believes she may not have been Rishiman. He shows little interest in pursuing either parent’s history despite Morse Ironbone’s insistence that his umbilical cord could lead him to his mother. 7 8 21
At the beginning of his journey, War Chief Gona sends Kas into the Forgotten Grassland to find a wife for the old shaman Hadi. The ritual instead results in Kas becoming engaged to the cursed werewolf Aowu, later called Seneya. Although he initially treats her as an animal and tries to rationalize the outcome as a loophole in the ritual, he gradually accepts responsibility for her safety. 1 3 4
Kas travels south with Seneya and the animated skull of his ancestor, Morse Ironbone. Their investigation of Nosa’s forest cottage exposes Nosa’s control over beasts, her connection to cursed victims, and the murders hidden beneath her idyllic home. Kas ultimately kills Nosa for knowingly feeding human flesh to others and unleashing beasts against people, though he mourns the kind person she might have been. Angeli later resurrects Nosa free of her curse. 11 16 18 19
After reaching Iron Peak Mountain, Kas becomes entangled in Black Ember tribal politics. Shaman Baize recognizes his unusual affinity for spirits and teaches him alchemical principles. Kas helps create a substitute metal comparable to Radel, drawing the dangerous attention of War Chief Keck Bloodfire, his father’s blood-sworn brother. 23 26 28 31
Kas later confronts the Lady of Death, Lagrey, over the honor killings of Tina and Delin Blackheart. Refusing to accept that divine dreams or tradition justify needless death, he chooses to follow the moral demands of his own conscience. 36 40 45
Appearance
Kas is an exceptionally tall, heavily built young Rishiman man whose physique is repeatedly compared to stone or a marble pillar. 9 25
- Short orange-red hair, described as resembling dancing flames. 9
- Frost-blue eyes that give him a cold, severe presence. 9
- Battle-hardened, muscular body; his self-assessed Strength and Constitution greatly exceed a standard Southerner’s. 25
- Later grows a slight beard. 46
- Bears Rishiman tattoos, including a deer-head-related design examined during Lagrey’s dream. 42
Personality
Kas is skeptical, analytical, and stubbornly independent. He repeatedly tries to interpret unfamiliar traditions, spirits, and divine phenomena through logic, often creating internal “plans” to organize his reasoning. His confidence in these deductions can become absurdly self-assured, particularly during the ritual that makes Seneya his wife. 3 11
Despite his bluntness and occasional cruelty toward enemies, Kas is deeply protective of those he considers his own. He tends Seneya’s injuries, promises to defend her from tribal prejudice, teaches her to read, and risks confrontation with gods and spirits rather than abandon his convictions. 4 18 33 45
Kas strongly rejects the Rishiman acceptance of honor killings and fatalistic divine oracles. Tina’s suicide enrages him because he sees a life discarded for a tradition no one questioned; this outrage drives his confrontation with Lagrey and his insistence that his “oracle” comes from personal moral responsibility rather than divine authority. 36 40 45
Abilities & Skills
Physical Prowess
Kas possesses extreme strength, endurance, and combat reflexes even by Rishiman standards.
- Self-assessed attributes: Strength 40, Constitution 45, Agility 28, and Spirit 22, with a standard Southerner estimated at 10 in physical attributes. 25
- Can tear apart an oak bedframe and part of a wall with his bare hands. 13
- Deflects and disarms an armed attacker using a butcher’s axe despite suffering a shoulder wound. 36
- Reacts quickly enough to intercept Xipel Blackheart’s axe strike and counterattack at close range. 47
- In a dream shaped by the Lady of Death, recognizes his simulated future strength after stopping a charging woolly rhinoceros with one hand. 44
Plans and Inspiration
Kas receives structured “Plan” prompts tied to his reasoning and inspiration, allowing him to formulate and complete unusual solutions.
- Used Plan: Aconite Also Blooms to exploit the logic of a sacred marriage ritual, resulting in his arranged union with Seneya. 3
- Created Plan: Clear Eyes to break Seneya out of her red-eyed werewolf frenzy by slapping her. 13
- Developed Plan: Transmutation while studying alchemy; although the project ultimately failed, it led him to discover a method of transferring magical capacity between minerals. 28 31
- His system cannot generate inspiration within a lucid dream, helping him recognize Lagrey’s illusion as false. 44
Alchemy and Transmutation
Under Baize’s guidance, Kas applies philosophical reasoning and Sacred Number Theory to metalworking experiments.
- Studied an introductory alchemy manual and the rune smiths’ failed attempts to produce Radel. 28 29
- Shifted the objective from copying Radel’s recipe to reproducing its magical load-bearing properties. 29
- Created a strip of metal with properties comparable to Radel after drawing a complex pattern around a heating barrel. 30
- Learned to extract magical capacity from minerals and transfer it into another ore, producing a heavier, purer Radel-like ingot. 31
- The process consumes significant mental energy; after decoding Seneya’s cursed writing, Kas vomits blood and faints from exertion. 33
Spiritual Perception and Sacred Number Theory
Kas can perceive and interact with spirits to a degree, though he remains uncertain whether he is a shaman or a professional at all.
- Accepts the existence of spirits after receiving a dead girl’s warning through Nosa’s soup. 11
- Is recognized by Baize as someone touched by the spirits’ blessing and potentially connected to Great Shaman Hadi. 26
- Uses Sacred Number Theory as a framework of certainty against hallucinations and dream logic. 44
- Communicates with wandering spirits and calls Luna to his hand during his confrontation with Xipel Blackheart’s soul. 46
- Is marked by the Lady of Death after surviving his soul’s journey on Iron Peak Mountain. 48
