Background / History
Konoha service and recruitment of Akashi
Orochimaru’s reputation as a Sannin rests on numerous S-rank missions and his performance in the Second and Third Shinobi World Wars. He commanded the prolonged Battle of Mount Kikyo and became particularly feared by Sunagakure, whose shinobi had suffered heavily at his hands 43 52.
While heading the Konoha Official Research Institute, he learns that his former subordinate, Uchiha Akashi, has been studying biotechnology. He investigates Akashi’s notes, tests him with an ambush in the forest, and offers him an assistant’s position. Akashi initially declines, then accepts after negotiating personal ninjutsu instruction; privately, Akashi intends to act as a mole 17 18 19.
Orochimaru trains Akashi alongside Anko through demanding live combat and teaches his snake techniques. Their research expands into cellular activation, regeneration, and experiments on the captured Shinnō. Orochimaru brands Shinnō with the Heaven Cursed Seal and uses it to compel the surrender of his medical research 20 24 31 32 33.
Border command and defection
The Third Hokage sends Orochimaru to counter Sunagakure’s border harassment, with Akashi accompanying him. Orochimaru reinforces a force threatened by Pakura, summons Manda, and covers the others’ withdrawal. He subsequently purges suspicious members of the original garrison; Konoha takes the opportunity to destroy two hidden Sunagakure strongholds 43 52 53 56.
As his research outgrows the village laboratory, Orochimaru offers to leave that facility to Akashi and invites him to defect together. Akashi refuses because of his obligations to the Uchiha clan. Before fleeing, Orochimaru steals forbidden techniques and classified research, including Wood Release data and the Second Hokage’s legacy 99 111.
His departure is partly planned and partly disrupted by the Third Hokage arriving earlier than expected. Orochimaru leaves numerous subordinates behind, exposing them to purges, imprisonment, or reform. Anko’s recovered memories later reveal his human experiments in the Land of Sea and his abandonment of her after she received a Cursed Seal 143.
Conflict and renewed cooperation with Akashi
Akashi contacts Orochimaru in the Land of Rice Fields, offering a base in exchange for access to Sage Art. Orochimaru instead demands Sharingan and reveals that transplanted eyes alone are insufficient: he wants a young Uchiha’s body. Negotiations become a fight, during which Akashi manipulates him into killing the daimyo with the Kusanagi Sword 150 151 153 154.
Kakuzu’s pursuit leads to another battle, followed by Orochimaru confronting Akashi with the Eight Branches Technique. Akashi counters with Moryo, producing a stalemate, then catches Orochimaru in Sharingan genjutsu. Orochimaru acknowledges his former subordinate’s strength, and their relationship shifts from control to collaboration 154 155 156 157 158.
They agree to exchange forbidden techniques and resources. Akashi promises to bring Itachi to Orochimaru once the immortality technique is complete, while Orochimaru trades his unfinished Impure World Reincarnation for the Reaper Death Seal and additional Uzumaki sealing techniques 158.
Otogakure and the Sin Organization
Orochimaru becomes the concealed leader of Otogakure, established with the Land of Rice Fields’ support. The village provides protection in return for resources and houses several secret research facilities. Under his agreement with Akashi, he refrains from abducting innocent civilians or shinobi for experiments, using local bandits instead 176 184.
He fulfills his promise to take Akashi to Ryūchi Cave, although he has not successfully mastered its Sage Art himself. Akashi’s rapid attainment of Sage Mode exposes Orochimaru’s bodily limitations, but Akashi continues to depend on his technology, commissioning Garaga’s replacement eye 177 181 184 214.
During the Konoha–Kumogakure conflict, Orochimaru enters the battlefield to collect research material rather than assist or avenge Konoha. After obtaining a sample from Toroi, he pursues the Sin Organization on his own initiative and gains admission. His encounters there include clashes with Kakuzu and Hiruko, and an unsuccessful attempt to seize Uchiha Qing 230 238 239 240 241.
He remains in contact with Akashi, reporting Sin’s membership and Uchiha Qing’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Later, he shares his partial Chimera research and recruits Shinnō to spy on Hiruko and Leader Yomi, offering assistance with Artificial Tailed Beast research as payment 250 256 257.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slender 24.
- Face: Extremely pale, described as paper-white 18 151.
- Eyes: Golden, vertically slit pupils with eye shadow 18 151.
- Hair: Long and loose 20 230.
- Accessories: Magatama earrings in his early encounter with Akashi; snake-shaped earrings during the border deployment 18 52.
- Clothing: Initially wears a ninja uniform and Konoha forehead protector. Later appearances feature casual clothing or loose robes secured with a rope sash or shimenawa 18 99 230.
- Voice and mannerisms: Speaks in a low, hoarse voice and frequently extends his tongue or licks his lips 18 24 240.
Personality
Orochimaru seeks to understand chakra and master every technique in the world. Immortality is a means to that larger ambition: an unlimited lifespan would give him the time necessary to pursue unlimited knowledge. Unknown phenomena and valuable specimens can excite him even during combat, as demonstrated by his fascination with Moryo 24 156.
He treats people instrumentally and accepts lethal experimentation without hesitation. When testing the Cursed Seal, he dismisses the possibility of Shinnō dying because a regeneration technique that cannot survive the test would not interest him. He also cooperates with Danzo to obtain funding and materials through fraudulent requests 32 102.
His confidence in his talent coexists with resentment toward bloodline advantages and his own physical limitations. Seeing Itachi’s Sharingan convinces him that effort cannot overcome every disparity. Akashi’s mastery of Sage Mode provokes jealousy, while defeats involving the Sharingan only intensify his desire to possess it 153 157 184 240.
Despite his cruelty, he can be an effective teacher and pragmatic collaborator. He recognizes Akashi’s aptitude, provides hands-on instruction, accepts their changed balance of power, and honors the restriction against experimenting on innocents in Otogakure 20 158 184.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases snakes from his sleeves to attack or restrain targets; he teaches it to Akashi 18 20.
- Hidden Shadow Multi-Snake Hands: Uses multiple larger snakes for rapid attacks and capture attempts 24 153 184.
- Snake Clone Technique: Employs snake-based decoys and teaches the technique during Akashi’s early training 18 20.
- Manda: Summons the giant snake for battlefield support and transport to Ryūchi Cave. Manda demands payment, but becomes less assertive as Orochimaru grows stronger 53 177.
- Covert transport and communication: Uses a python to swallow and transport Shinnō without revealing the laboratory’s location; creates white snakes specifically for coded communication 33 143 150.
- Venom: Incapacitates Kakuzu through an unexpected snake-poison attack, though the same tactic is unlikely to work once Kakuzu understands it 154 155.
Cellular Activation and Regeneration
- Cellular activation: Increases available physical energy and chakra, supporting prolonged combat 24 155.
- Body regeneration: Restores vitality and stamina through cell multiplication and accelerated division 157.
- Limit: Regeneration consumes lifespan while his immortality research remains unfinished; he avoids unnecessary use 24 157.
- Personal substitute technique: Escapes a charred, mutilated body by emerging intact from its mouth 240.
Cursed Seals
- Heaven Cursed Seal: Implants a three-tomoe mark through a bite to the neck. Its natural-energy-derived power strengthens the recipient’s body 32.
- Control: Uses the seal to threaten Shinnō and force cooperation. Shinnō continues to experience pain at the mark when encountering him 32 33 230 238.
- Development limits: The initial version has a high mortality rate and unverified controllability 32.
- Soul connection: The seal is described as capable of storing a soul backup and enabling resurrection. However, Akashi explicitly questions whether Orochimaru’s early prototype has reached that stage 32.
Eight Branches Technique
- Transformation: Becomes a colossal, snow-white, eight-headed serpent known as Yamata no Orochi 156.
- Regeneration: Repeatedly repairs severe damage; its exceptional vitality sustains a stalemate against Moryo 156 157.
- Additional attacks: Can wield enormous imitation swords through the serpent heads and use elemental ninjutsu while transformed 156 157.
- Limits: The confrontation does not establish a decisive victory over Moryo. Akashi abandons brute-force pressure in favor of attacking Orochimaru himself with genjutsu 157.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Combat
- Chakra natures: Described as possessing every chakra nature 157.
- Demonstrated techniques: Water Release: Water Formation Wall, Wind Release: Great Breakthrough, Earth Clone, and fire attacks during the Eight Branches transformation 20 154 157.
- Close combat: Combines speed, swordsmanship, snake attacks, and precise counters; Akashi and Anko together cannot match him during early training 20.
- Defensive option: Possesses Rashomon, but cannot deploy it in time against Kakuzu’s close-range combined attack 155.
- Offensive limitation: His conventional arsenal lacks sufficient large-scale destructive power to easily overcome Kakuzu, pushing him toward his signature techniques 155.
Genjutsu and Sealing Knowledge
- Genjutsu expertise: Ranked among Konoha’s strongest practitioners; detects and dispels Akashi’s illusion, though only after suffering its effects 157.
- Sharingan vulnerability: Akashi’s surprise genjutsu defeats him, while Uchiha Qing’s gravity-based ocular technique later pins him down 157 240.
- Seal analysis: Recognizes Danzo’s control seals as techniques inherited from the Second Hokage and claims exceptional knowledge of that legacy 39.
- Research utility: Uses sealing techniques to handle large equipment, including Garaga’s cultivation tank 214.
Biotechnology and Forbidden Research
- Organ cultivation: Can grow replacement organs from biological source material; Garaga’s cultivated eye is successfully transplanted by Akashi 184 214.
- Bloodline replication: Discusses cultivating Sharingan, unsealed Byakugan, and other rare bloodlines, while stressing that replication does not guarantee mastery of their power 185.
- Living Corpse Reincarnation: Develops a body-transfer technique requiring destruction of the target’s soul before possession; completion is not confirmed in the supplied events 177 241.
- Impure World Reincarnation: Researches the Second Hokage’s resurrection technique, initially unable to produce functioning, obedient summons 158.
- Chimera analysis: Investigates bloodline fusion, bodily strain, conflicting chakra natures, and possible soul changes. Later reconstructs part of Hiruko’s formula 238 241 256.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
