Background / History
Yu Ming is a transmigrator who initially arrives disoriented and wary of unknown people and surroundings. He later receives a System with Personal Info, Career Mode, Exchange Shop, and Deck Edit functions, though its annual report records zero duels, points, abilities, friends, and scenarios. His starting deck, [End of Despair], consists largely of Normal Monsters without a clear strategy. 1 3
His first major trial is a Shadow Game against Bandit Keith. After being badly injured and realizing that he had treated the world as though he were merely an outside viewer of an anime, Yu Ming admits that his own overconfidence and assumptions were dangerous. He resolves to be more cautious and to respect opponents rather than dismiss them. 6 7
While working alongside Noah Kaiba's group in the Underworld, Yu Ming defeats Noah, Ogorou Daimon, Nicorophia, and other hostile duelists. He rescues Shiranui Solitaire, gains allies among card spirits, investigates Dragon Sanctuary and Dragon Soul Castle, and repeatedly confronts the Void Demon and the Necromancer King. 20 51 71 114
Yu Ming later learns that the Red-Eyes warrior connected to his past was used as a pawn and vessel in a failed ritual meant to save the world. After confronting this history and falling into despair, a witch revives him through a reincarnation ritual as the Crimson King. He ultimately chooses to take responsibility for the consequences surrounding him and protect the world rather than abandon it. 137 141 149 153
Following the Underworld conflict, surviving Vampires recognize Yu Ming as the new ruler of the Underworld and offer him a Blood Pact. He subsequently acts as an Industrial Illusions representative during Duel City, including a duel against Rishid of the Tomb Keepers. 182 200
In the Spirit World, Yu Ming becomes involved with Magician's Village. After defeating Dark Magician in a test duel, he inherits the Sky Witch's tower, research, and legacy, receiving the temporary identity of Red Magician – Fiend Type. 305 306 311 312
Appearance
Yu Ming is a young man generally depicted in dark clothing, including a dark top and black attire. His later transformations and magical encounters are associated with crimson eyes and a left eye that can flare with fire. 44 128 149 336
- Wears a trench coat during the Dragon Soul Castle conflict. 81
- Uses a mechanical Duel Disk, including one described as being covered in dragon-scale-like patterns after his Crimson King revival. 141 149
- His Crimson King form is associated with Undead attributes, fire, and a chilling armored presence. 149
Personality
Yu Ming is sarcastic, blunt, and unusually willing to mock opponents in the middle of dangerous duels. He often responds to intimidation with dry remarks, whether facing Bandit Keith, Hades, Ogorou Daimon, or the Blue-Eyes protector. 4 32 46 388
Despite this attitude, he is self-aware. After his early encounter with Keith, Yu Ming recognizes that he had been arrogant in his own way: he had assumed he understood the world and its people because of his prior knowledge. This realization makes him more deliberate and adaptable in later conflicts. 6
Yu Ming is calm under pain and pressure, often maintaining his focus during Shadow Games, mental attacks, and duels where his Life Points are critically low. His composure can appear unnerving to enemies such as Amelda and the Necromancer King. 44 112 331
He also shows a growing capacity for empathy. He encourages a disillusioned Holy Knight, promises Shiranui Solitaire that he will restore order to the Underworld, and later acknowledges guilt over leaving Zera behind. 74 117 152
