Class A underwent a silent reshuffling of power following the exam results.
Arisu Sakayanagi sat quietly in a corner of the classroom, leaning on her cane as she listened to Masumi Kamuro report the grades. Every student in Class A had passed; not a single person was expelled, perfectly meeting the expectations for an elite class. Yet, the true deciding factor of this exam was not the grades, but the hearts of the students.
Kohei Katsuragi led the solidarity faction in intensive tutoring, ultimately ensuring everyone's safety and proving through results that "mutual aid" was not in vain. Arisu's theory of survival of the fittest temporarily lost its absolute persuasive power in the face of a 100% pass rate.
Following this silent contest, Class A established a path led by Kohei Katsuragi for the time being. A moderate, steady approach that prioritized the collective replaced the cold, exclusionary tactics as the mainstream choice for Class A at this stage.
Arisu Sakayanagi did not care in the slightest, even nodding with a faint smile: "This is fine, too. It's more interesting this way."
Her gaze was never fixed on the internal affairs of Class A, but rather on the entire chessboard of the first-year students.
The stability of Class B, the violent integration of Class C, the desperate self-rescue of Class D, as well as the ever-elusive Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, and Yoshikage Kira, who only wished to live a quiet life.
The chessboard was becoming increasingly lively.
Shortly after, Kohei Katsuragi asked to speak with Arisu Sakayanagi, choosing the class point bulletin board as their meeting spot.
"Class C is starting to falter. Is this Ryuen's doing? He truly is a dangerous man." Kohei Katsuragi was requesting an exchange of intelligence with Arisu, having apparently received news that Kakeru Ryuen's violent consolidation of his class had led to a deduction of class points.
"How boring." Arisu Sakayanagi leaned on her cane and walked away slowly, a silent rejection of his request.
Meanwhile, in Class B.
The results were announced: everyone had passed.
After a brief moment of cheering, the class quickly returned to its gentle and orderly state. There was only the relief of the dust finally settling.
Honami Ichinose stood in the center of the classroom, a look of relief and a gentle smile on her face, sincerely thanking everyone: "Thanks to everyone's hard work, we were all able to make it through this exam safely." In reality, Ryuji Kanzaki and Ichinose had also obtained the old test questions through various channels, though they had little time to use them.
"It's all thanks to Ichinose-san!"
"That's right, you were the one leading our study sessions!"
Ryuji Kanzaki stood to the side, nodding slightly in acknowledgment of the result. Class B was like a ship sailing smoothly, moving steadily through the wind and waves.
Yoshikage Kira remained seated in the last row by the window, watching it all calmly.
A full pass rate was exactly as he had anticipated. The unity, self-discipline, and mutual aid of Class B were, by nature, the most solid of shields.
The first special exam had concluded.
The landscape of each class was now firmly set:
Class A was steadily in the lead, Class B was firmly and gently in second place, Class C had formed a violent dictatorship, And Class D had barely managed to gain a foothold in the face of despair.
Kira looked out the window; the sunlight was perfect.
Barely half a day had passed since the end of the first special exam, yet the atmosphere throughout the entire first year had changed completely. Some had been pulled back from the brink of expulsion, some had achieved dominance through violence, some had seized leadership through stability, and some were moving forward steadily in harmony. Four vastly different paths were unfolding across the campus of Advanced Nurturing High School, watching one another as undercurrents surged.
Class B remained the most peaceful sanctuary.
There was no rowdiness after school; many students volunteered to stay behind to organize notes and review incorrect answers, creating an atmosphere that was both gentle and fulfilling. Honami Ichinose moved between the desks, patiently answering lingering questions, her voice soft yet reassuring. Ryuji Kanzaki sat in the back, occasionally offering key insights; he spoke little, but every word was precise. Shibata Sou kept the mood light, adding a sense of ease to the slightly tedious review process. Everything was in perfect order.
Yoshikage Kira sat in his usual spot in the last row by the window, his notes organized with meticulous care. He did not participate in the review, nor did he leave early; he simply followed his own rhythm, analyzing the characteristics and rule loopholes exposed by each class during the exam.
After finishing with the questions at hand, Honami Ichinose walked lightly to Kira's desk, a gentle smile on her face: "Kira-kun, we really owe you for this. Many people have said that your explanations are exceptionally clear."
Kira looked up, his tone steady: "It was part of my duty. Class B passing in its entirety is everyone's achievement."
"But Kira-kun has been silently helping everyone all along." Ichinose looked at him earnestly, her eyes filled with sincerity. "Please continue to look after us in the future. Let's work together to keep Class B peaceful."
"Mm." Kira nodded slightly and lowered his head once more.
He was not adept at handling such direct kindness, but he would not refuse it either. This stability was exactly what he needed most at the moment.
For Kira, the value of Class B lay precisely in this undisturbed order.
Honami Ichinose was the gentle center, gathering everyone onto a stable track, free from strife, conspiracy, or sudden storms. He only needed to remain quietly in his corner to enjoy this hard-won daily life. It fit perfectly with the life he pursued.
Throughout the hallways and school buildings, the post-exam state of each class was clear at a glance.
Most students in Class A appeared calm and slightly relaxed. Kohei Katsuragi was surrounded by several classmates discussing future study arrangements; the leadership of the moderate faction had been solidified. His tone was firm as he emphasized continuing their mutual aid and not abandoning anyone, winning over many supporters.
On the side where Arisu Sakayanagi stood, it remained quiet and detached. Masumi Kamuro followed by her side, reporting the subsequent movements of the other classes in a low voice. Arisu nodded gently from time to time, a faint smile always lingering on her pale face, as if it mattered not to her who led Class A.
"Class B is becoming increasingly threatening," Masumi Kamuro whispered. "Honami Ichinose's ability to unite the class is stronger than I imagined."
"The problem isn't Ichinose," Arisu said softly, her gaze passing through the hallway as if she could see directly into that corner of the Class B classroom. "The people who try the hardest to hide are often the ones who become the key to breaking the stalemate."
She was in no hurry, simply waiting quietly.
Class C, however, was in an entirely different atmosphere.
Kakeru Ryuen sat on a desk, surrounded by his cronies like Daichi Ishizaki, arrogantly laying out his next tasks: "Keep a close eye on Class D and Class B from here on out. Class D dared to play tricks under my nose, and Class B... keep in mind that they're just pretending to be the good guys."
Mio Ibuki leaned against the wall, complaining about how "troublesome" it was, yet she did not leave; Albert stood silently to the side, neither echoing his words nor resisting. The two remained awkward, yet they had already defaulted to accepting Ryuen's leadership.
Everyone in Class C knew—follow Ryuen, and you survive; resist Ryuen, and you will be the first to be eliminated.
The obedience under a violent regime was both solid and cold.
Ryuen's gaze swept across the class, a cruel smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
For the next exam, he would bare his fangs at the other classes without a moment's hesitation.
Class D remained caught in the aftershocks of the recent turmoil.
Ken Sudo was being pulled along by Yosuke Hirata, offering endless thanks with gratitude written all over his face. He still did not fully grasp how he had been saved, knowing only that he would not be expelled. Kanji Ike, Haruki Yamauchi, and the others surrounded him, feeling a mix of relief and lingering fear.
Yosuke Hirata continued to play the role of the nice guy, moving about to soothe everyone and striving to restore stability to the class. Yet, he knew deep down that the stability of Class D was fragile and could collapse again at any moment, and he had no good solution to offer.
Kikyo Kushida drifted through the crowd with a perfect smile, comforting everyone while secretly taking in the reactions of every person present. Who was sincere, who was fake, who was afraid, and who was calculating—it was all crystal clear to her.
Suzune Horikita remained alone in the corner, watching it all with a cold eye. She did not care for social niceties; she only cared whether the class was stable and whether they could continue to climb higher. This collaboration with Kiyotaka Ayanokoji to save Sudo had made her take a bit more notice of that blank-slate boy.
Kiyotaka Ayanokoji remained huddled in his corner, as calm as if he did not exist.
He had completed his layout: preserve Sudo, stabilize Class D, conceal himself, and test the rules. Everything had gone according to plan.
Only he knew that every seemingly accidental turning point for Class D had come from his own behind-the-scenes maneuvering.
Night fell, and the campus returned to silence.
