Background

Hoshida was initially homeless and penniless, seeking food, work, and shelter while concealing details about himself from Kushida Kikyo. He used the name “Hoshino No” during their first meeting and adapted his behavior to avoid revealing too much. 4 5

After being repeatedly rejected from jobs because he was a minor, he was noticed by Karuizawa Kenichi, who offered him a place to stay. Hoshida began living with Kenichi’s family, including Kei Karuizawa, and later worked at a general store. 5 6

Two years after moving in, Hoshida had become Kei’s daily escort home from school. He ended the bullying she faced, contributing to her rise from an isolated target to a confident and popular student. 6

He passed Ikuei High School’s entrance examination, including a physical test covering sprinting, endurance, jumping, pull-ups, and sit-ups, and entered Class 1-D. 9 11

Appearance

Hoshida is a tall, handsome young man with a composed presence that routinely draws attention from classmates and strangers. 6 12

  • Fair cheeks and deep, dark eyes. 4 5
  • Initially had slightly messy hair and wore ill-fitting borrowed clothing. 5
  • Usually dresses in simple, dark-colored casual clothes outside school. 29 50
  • Maintains an upright posture and an expression that others frequently describe as unreadable or emotionless. 28 41

Personality

Hoshida is guarded, restrained, and highly adaptive. He gives brief answers, avoids discussing his past, and can adjust his behavior to fit a situation without exposing his true intentions. 4 5 9

He approaches problems through efficiency, leverage, and calculated risk rather than sentimentality. This makes him effective in the school’s point economy and strategic exams, but also causes others to regard him as difficult to read. 19 21 36 44

Despite his detachment, he repeatedly acts to protect others: he stopped Kei’s bullies, prevented Horikita Manabu from striking Suzune, exposed Kushida’s framing attempt without publicly destroying her, and intervened against voyeurism at the beach. 6 27 32 49
