Uchiha Shin sat there without saying a word.
Back at Slanting Moon Three Stars Cave, Patriarch Bodhi had also told him that cultivators needed to be ruthless, for the immortal path was cruel and dangerous at every turn.
Many people would covet your cultivation. Most of the time, they would use you as a stepping stone to climb higher themselves, without the slightest mercy.
Perhaps they were your friend one moment, only to stab you in the back the next.
Maitreya Buddha was smiling as he spoke to Uchiha Shin now, but he might kill Uchiha Shin the very next moment. Uchiha Shin would be utterly unable to resist.
However, Maitreya Buddha would not kill him for the time being. After all, the time was not yet right.
"Mystic Spirit King, when you cultivated under Patriarch Bodhi, he must have taught you about the heartlessness of the path to immortality. You should have long been mentally prepared for such things," Maitreya Buddha said again.
Patriarch Bodhi had said so before, but Uchiha Shin had not agreed with him at the time. He believed that cultivating immortality did not necessarily mean becoming cold and heartless. People could be like ordinary mortals, bound by loyalty and affection, and still attain the cultivation heights they desired.
Yet Patriarch Bodhi had said that this was exceedingly difficult—practically impossible—because the most important part of cultivation was cultivating one's heart.
To reach a higher realm, one naturally had to endure enormous temptations and immense pressure. Thus, one's heart had to remain pure and unclouded in order to touch greater heights.
Once one possessed the seven emotions and six desires, once one was obscured by desire, one could easily suffer qi deviation, have all one's cultivation ruined, and never reach the heights one sought.
