Background / History

The Three Realms were opened by Pangu, who transformed into mountains, rivers, the sun, and the moon. Nüwa subsequently created its living beings, while Eastern Emperor Taiyi founded the Ancient Heavenly Court and governed the realms. These ancient gods are portrayed as the original builders and protectors of the world. 4726

The Ancient Heavenly Court later entered a catastrophic conflict with the Ancestral Witches. Though the two sides should have jointly safeguarded the Three Realms, they were divided by internal problems and outside provocation; both ultimately perished, leaving the realms without their original stability. 5430

After the Ancient Heavenly Court's fall, the Three Sovereigns rose to prominence. Their era was remembered as a golden age in which they commanded widespread respect, but the Deva Path gradually eliminated them. They survived only by relying on the power within Fire Cloud Cave, which they cannot leave without being reduced to ashes. 4905 4906

Later regimes—including those led by the Dao Sect and Buddhist Sect—followed a recurring pattern of rise, decline, and replacement. Patriarch Bodhi characterizes this cycle as a fundamental historical problem of the Three Realms, one that even powerful rulers such as Taishang Laojun and Tathagata Buddha could not escape. 5430

Strength is widely treated as the decisive source of authority in the Three Realms. Taishang Laojun states that sufficiently powerful cultivators can control the fates of others, while the pursuit of the Saint Realm is often driven by the desire to rule rather than protect. 5242

This system enables a small number of great powers to dominate political life. Their conflicts have repeatedly endangered ordinary beings, who are often treated as tools in elite struggles rather than as stakeholders in the realms' future. 5380 6446

Deva Path and Fortune

The Deva Path influences the stability, leadership, and historical development of the Three Realms. Its weakening created an opportunity for powerful cultivators to seek entry into the Saint Realm, but also intensified competition among major factions. 4160 4888

The Deva Path can eliminate those unable to adapt to the era, as happened to the Three Sovereigns and, by Eastern Emperor Taiyi's own account, to himself after the fall of the Ancient Heavenly Court. 4697 4905

A later disturbance heralded an alternation between old fortune and new fortune, signaling a potential transfer of leadership and influence across the Three Realms. The old powers, particularly the Three Pure Ones and the Buddhist Sect, sought to identify and respond to the force representing the new fortune. 5817

The Three Sovereigns used the Three Sovereigns Banner to foresee that the candidate connected to the Deva Path's choice would be found in the west, encompassing the Western Ox-He Continent and West Blue. 5252

Unified Rules

Carefree Great Emperor proposed a unified body of rules for all three realms, arguing that clear standards would restrain powerful figures, reduce disorder, and gradually lessen conflict. 5617

The proposal was unprecedented because the major leaders had traditionally considered themselves above all rules. Taishang Laojun, Tathagata Buddha, and other powers initially resisted, but Carefree Great Emperor compelled them to begin formal discussions within the Heavenly Court. 5617 5618

Condition of the Realms

The Three Realms are repeatedly described as unstable, politically fragmented, and vulnerable to destruction through unchecked conflict among their strongest inhabitants. The growth of Goku's power, battles between major factions, and interference by forces such as Patriarch Hongjun all threatened the existing order. 5363 5800 5920

Despite this instability, several figures advocate a model in which the Three Realms belong to all living beings rather than a small ruling group.
