Background / History

Tsunade was already a celebrated ideal among Konoha's aspiring female ninja, who viewed becoming “a great female ninja just like Lady Tsunade” as a common ambition. Her reputation rests on both her medical ninjutsu and her combat strength. 2 3 136

After leaving Konoha, she spent more than a decade traveling and gambling, accumulating debts across multiple cities. Her disastrous luck earned her the derisive gambling names “Big Fat Sheep” and “Big Sucker.” 156 157

Jiraiya and Uchiha Ye Han eventually found Tsunade while seeking treatment for Ye Han's dangerously depleted life force. Rather than immediately agreeing, Tsunade tested him: she would assist only if he could land a hit on her. The battle forced Ye Han to confront the gap between them and convinced Tsunade that his potential could support Konoha's future. 158 159 160

Tsunade accompanied Jiraiya and Ye Han to Sunagakure to seek Chiyo's life-force treatment. Chiyo restored Ye Han's failing life force at the cost of a year of her own lifespan, while Tsunade used her exacting chakra control to restore his life activity after the procedure. 163 168

Fifth Hokage
