Background / History

Jiraiya is a disciple of the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, and one of the Legendary Sannin. He later becomes the teacher of the Fourth Hokage, Minato, and is recognized as an exceptional mentor despite his own doubts about his teaching ability. 150 345

During the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya remained in the Land of Rain to teach three orphaned children the skills needed to survive. One of them, Nagato, possessed the Rinnegan and had already mastered all six chakra natures by the time Jiraiya left. Jiraiya came to suspect that Nagato—or another of his extraordinary pupils—might be the prophesied Child of Prophecy. 339 1562 1563

Sarutobi later sends Jiraiya to escort the severely injured Uchiha Ye Han to Tsunade for treatment. Jiraiya diagnoses the lasting damage caused by Ye Han's forbidden-jutsu use, offers hope through Tsunade's medical expertise, protects him from repeated assassination attempts, and teaches him the Rasengan. 150 151 152 153

Years later, Jiraiya infiltrates Amegakure to investigate Akatsuki and confronts Nagato and Konan. He refuses to ignore his former students' path, but the Six Paths of Pain overwhelm him in Sage Mode, severing his right arm and leaving him critically wounded.
