Background / History
Miroku rules the neutral Land of Demons, a militarily weak country located between the Land of Earth and Land of Wind. When rogue ninjas begin operating within her country and Moryo's seal shows signs of weakening, she travels to Konoha to request aid. The Third Hokage initially refuses due to the diplomatic risks of deploying Konoha shinobi so far from the Land of Fire. 33
With envoys to the Lands of Wind and Earth already unsuccessful, Miroku offers a major payment to secure Konoha's support. Uchiha Shiraha and Uchiha Itachi ultimately accept the mission. 33 39
Miroku has inherited the burden borne by generations of priestesses: Moryo was created from the evil half of the First Generation Shrine Maiden, while the benevolent half continued through the priestess lineage. Each generation has had to merge with and reseal Moryo, sacrificing their freedom to contain its growing malice. 43
Her daughter, Shion, is central to her decisions. Miroku seeks not merely to reseal Moryo but to destroy him permanently, believing this is the only way to free Shion from inheriting the priestess' fate. 41 43 48
Appearance
Miroku is depicted in a white kimono with her hair partly pinned up, a slender waist, and a gentle expression. 41
- Wears formal priestess attire on official occasions. 41
- Has long hair that falls like a waterfall when she bows. 46
- Is observed wearing a gentle smile while caring for Shion after Moryo's death. 50
Personality
Miroku is initially cautious and secretive about Moryo's seal, fearing that revealing its location could endanger the Land of Demons. She nevertheless accepts responsibility for the crisis and is willing to seek foreign assistance when her own country's guards cannot oppose rogue ninjas. 33 41
Her strongest motivation is protecting Shion. The inherited duty of the shrine maiden line leaves her resentful of Moryo, and she becomes resolute once she realizes that Shiraha may possess the means to erase the demon completely. 43 44
Miroku is prepared to sacrifice herself, her position, and her future for her country and daughter. After witnessing Shiraha destroy the Undead Legion, she becomes convinced that he is the Land of Demons' hope and repeatedly seeks his help beyond the original mission terms. 45 46 47
