Who Is She?
This place is located in the bustling municipal center of Vardona, surrounded by high-rise buildings that stretch into the sky.
The magnificent and spectacular skyscraper complex is not as crowded as the city center of Tarsonis, but is interspersed with beautiful roads, large, neatly manicured green lawns, and intermittent Fountain shimmer with colorful lights.
Next to it is a ship-shaped eco-park converted from a sunken cargo ship. It uses atmospheric modification equipment to create a variety of different environments such as rainforest, grassland and coniferous forest. It contains exotic plants from all over the world as well as rare wild animals, including Bengal tiger, Yusadon bear, blue-crowned deer and bear-toothed beast, some of which have even been declared extinct in their native habitat.
This eco-park, built during the Guild Wars under the guise of promoting harmony between nature and humanity, was so expensive that it cost enough to build a destroyer or to feed tens of thousands of war refugees who starved to death during the war. Although the outspoken Vardona politicians exposed this massive, wasteful project as utterly useless except to satisfy the governor's personal whims, no one questioned the powerful governor about it.
The governor of Vardona was a titled Tarsonis nobleman, and he was a key figure in the Confederacy's control over Vardona.
No matter how precious the Vardona Central Ecological Park was, it was now a scene of devastation after the fierce fighting between the Revolutionary Army and the security personnel of the Bennett Trade Tower. The crescent-shaped dome, built with a frame of clear transparent glass and reinforced fused alloy, had collapsed under the bombardment, and rare birds and animals that were rarely seen on ordinary days were now running around on the roads covered with rubble.
The open space between the Vardona Gate Skyscraper, the Bennett Trade Tower, and the Eco Park was littered with bloodied corpses, most of whom were security personnel from the Bennett Building.
The security personnel were all veterans who had retired after the Guild Wars. After their honorable retirement, they chose to seek a high-paying job in Vardona. The experienced veterans were far more effective than the weak and ineffective Confederacy troops stationed in Vardona, which also saved the governor the trouble of dealing with the antagonistic Duke Family generals.
The security personnel at Bennett Tower were all dressed in the latest CMC-300 Power Armor. Their armor was dark blue, the same color scheme used in most territories of the Terran Confederacy, and bore the yellow and black striped single-star insignia of Vardona. Their weapons were also standard Confederate Marine Corps armament. With the firepower support of numerous automatic cannons and missile pods, they held off the Battlefield Porcupine Special Forces for about twenty minutes.
Normally, this would be enough to hold out until the nearest reinforcements arrive, but the Revolutionary Army's airborne troops in Vardona's main city were clearly not limited to the War Pigs unit. Other airborne troops were guarding key routes, blocking all reinforcements.
In the distance, two Revolutionary Army Arclite Siege Tank, which were subsequently airdropped into the city center, were advancing along the road in front of the building when they collided head-on with several moving Confederacy Goliath Combat Robot. The roar of Thor's Hammer Cannon was like thunder.
The Revolutionary Army clearly did not want to destroy the entire city in order to seize control of Vardona's main city; they did not even need to occupy the city for long, but only needed a victory in the Core World and a claim to the planet.
A sharp whistling sound from a rocket exploded in Carolina Davis's ears, and the doors of the Bennett Trade Tower, along with several Confederacy soldiers behind them, were blown to pieces in the violent explosion.
Davis watched as several Revolutionary Army soldiers charged in without hesitation, only to be mowed down by heavy machine guns from behind the door. This quickly escalated into a fierce firefight, with the walls of the building's entrance almost completely blasted down by the heavy firepower of the Battlefield Porcupine Squad.
Even so, the guards continued to put up a fierce resistance. Although high-ranking officials and generals of the Confederacy generally preferred to employ Resocialized Soldier as their bodyguards, the people the Revolutionary Army was facing today were clearly not like that.
After the Revolutionary Army soldiers finally stormed into Bennett House, a fierce hand-to-hand battle even broke out in the lobby and corridors.
When Carolina Davis followed the Revolutionary Army Ghost operative, whose name she still didn't know, into the ravaged Bennett Building, she practically walked through blood. The heels of her high heels were stained with warm blood, which looked like red ink spread out in the rain in Vardona.
As a noblewoman raised under the careful protection of her family, Davis had never witnessed such a bloody and cruel scene. So many brave and fearless warriors, who were just breathing, had become mangled corpses in just a few minutes. Each of them had different thoughts and souls, yet they had all lost their lives for a single order.
The once gleaming alloy armor has been completely transformed into cold iron coffins, and the warriors on both sides have become flesh and blood molten into steel.
Davis quickly tore open the hem of her skirt and silk stockings, managing to keep up with the Ghost operative's pace as she ran; she was far from the pampered aristocratic lady she appeared to be.
Through his investigation, Davis found a massive, hidden steel gate behind a wall soaked in blood. The gate was three feet thick (over a meter), its surface covered with a thick layer of metal studded with huge copper nails, and flanked by two standing lions. These were the emblems of a family that monopolized the metal casting industry in Vardona, but they were also considered symbols of the Governor of Vardona.
The ambitious governor always likened himself to a lion, and he probably got along well with Augustus Mengsk, since the latter also liked to use the emblems of wolves, eagles, and lions.
This alloy door is only the first barrier in this underground fortress; opening it alone requires the power of a reactor. Several Revolutionary Army soldiers standing in front of the door carried out a whole box of Type D explosives, preparing to blast it open. Their movements were very practiced, indicating that they were used to doing this kind of thing.
"Give it a try, hopefully your method will work." The Ghost operative, whose face was hidden deep beneath a mask, waved to stop the soldiers and said to Davis, who was panting beside him.
Despite how incredible it seemed, Davis managed to pull out a Holographic Projection communication device the size of an eyeglass lens from beneath her wet, thin dress. This high-precision device, made by Adrian, was expensive to produce, and its masterful forging craftsmanship made it a highly valuable collectible.
With a flicker of light, an elderly man with a full head of white hair appeared in Davis's palm. Old Davis was already very old when he acquired Carolina; the most comfortable environment and life-extending enhancers made him far older than he actually looked.
"You're not at Tagore's party—God, let go of my daughter, you devil!" Old Davis's first sight was of his soaking wet daughter, followed by the Ghost operative standing behind her.
"I am a demon, once of the Confederacy, now of Augustus." The Ghost operative's voice was already terrifying, but this deliberate attempt made it even more frightening.
"Your daughter is safe, don't worry," he said. "You should be worried about yourself, Mr. Davis. The Revolutionary Army will surely take this city, and then all the Confederacy lackeys will be wiped out."
No. As a veteran aristocrat, Old Davis was a politician, a shrewd businessman, and a calculating investor. He had long heard about the Revolutionary Army's actions on certain planets—the wealthy, yet considered sinful, were all persecuted, their wealth and land being divided among civilians who supported the Revolutionary Army. As for the Confederacy officials, they were either missing or executed.
This means that wherever Augustus went, he tried to uproot the old forces. Augustus Mengsk was a nobleman, but he acted as if he hated his class so much, while his father Angus was, at heart, a traditional Confederacy nobleman.
The reason the Confederacy nobles hated Augustus and his Revolutionary Army so much was precisely because they showed no mercy to rulers and nobles, and the Confederacy rulers would not let Augustus off the hook just because he was lenient.
However, even so, many nobles not only survived but also retained their original assets and social status because they were all staunch supporters of Augustus, mainly the old nobles of Korhal IV.
"Impossible! Vardona will never fall!" came the roar of the Governor of Vardona from behind old Davis.
"Father, we all know that the Confederacy is doomed to destruction. It is overgrown with rotten flesh and beyond redemption. The people of Vardona do not need to perish with the Confederacy." Davis ignored the Vardona governor's roar and said to his father.
Old Davis would not surrender simply because his daughter had been captured by the enemy; he was never a loving father. More likely, he would only ruthlessly seek revenge for his daughter's tragic death. The deaths of his children would break Old Davis's heart, but as the patriarch who had ruled the Davis Family for many years, he had numerous children.
"It's time," she said.
"We've been talking about this for a long time; it's time to make a choice."
Davis and his father had discussed the Davis Family's stance between the Confederacy and the Rebels long ago, when the Korhal Rebellion had just begun and everyone thought the Rebels were no match for them.
Old Davis was well aware of the rampant bureaucracy and the numerous hidden dangers within the Confederacy. He also believed that Augustus Mengsk was a ruthless and ambitious man, and that the Davis Family's political investment would pay off. Little did he know that the Terra Family of Tarsonis had already placed their bet on Augustus before he had.
Even though the possibility of Augustus overthrowing the Confederacy is very small, the Davis Family still has to consider what they should do if the Terran Confederacy suddenly collapses one day.
"It's too early." Old Davis made his decision with lightning speed. "I failed to protect the Governor; I am to blame. Take action."
"What? I can't believe it! What did you say?"
Before Governor Vardona could utter another word, old Davis's loyal family guards had already pinned the enraged governor to the ground. Governor Vardona's guards fought back fiercely, engaging in a gunfight in the cramped underground fortress, but old Davis remained unmoved throughout.
"Tell Marshal Mengsk that it was Mili Davis who surrendered the governorship of Vardona and the city to him."
Old Davis wouldn't make a decision so quickly based on just a few words from his daughter on the communication channel, but now there were many Revolutionary Army soldiers who hated the Confederacy and the nobility standing over them.
"I will report your achievements truthfully to the Marshal's command. Thank you for your cooperation."
Before long, the heavy door slowly opened, and a grumpy-looking Mili Davis personally escorted the furious Governor Vardona out, occasionally kicking him a few times.
Over the years, Mili and Governor Crete Serena of Vardona had been close friends for decades, like brothers, which is why Governor Vardona would hide in the same place as old Davis. Now, Governor Vardona should understand what it means to know someone's face but not their heart.
"I misjudged you! Mili, Tarsonis will not let you get away with this!" Governor Vardona roared.
"That's why I said you're blind." Even in his old age, old Davis still spoke with a strong voice. Few people know now that nearly a century ago, Mili was known as the Fox of Vardona.
"Seize him." At the Ghost operative's command, Old Davis's family guards and Governor Vardona were immediately taken prisoner, but the former were clearly treated well.
"We will not resist," old Davis emphasized.
"I think you've had a chance to meet Marshal Augustus; he's on his way to the Governor's Palace." The Ghost operative suddenly turned to Davis, as if he had received some information. "The Marshal is decisive and always arrives before orders and notifications are given. If the Marshal says he's about to arrive, then he's probably already standing at the door."
"Come with me."
"Don't worry, Father, I'll get you out as soon as I get back," Davis said with a smile to his father, who was covered in dirt.
"I just hope you remember this, Carolina." Mili rolled her eyes.
When Davis rushed to Governor Vardona's mansion, Augustus was already sitting at the desk that originally belonged to the planet's governor, reviewing documents. He placed his hat, which had the insignia of Venus and the Ring of the Gathering on one foot of the desk, and wore a dark gray military uniform with a fur collar. Even while buried in the documents on the desk, he still maintained an upright posture.
When Davis walked into the office, Augustus immediately looked up at her, his cold gray eyes sharp as an eagle's.
To Davis's surprise, Augustus even younger than in the promotional posters, where he always had a mustache. Augustus looked much more manly than he did three years ago.
However, Davis then realized that he hadn't had time to change into dry clothes because he was so eager to see Augustus.
Davis's wet clothes clung tightly to the curves of her chest, revealing her swan-like neck and deep shoulder blades to Augustus's gaze. Beneath her ripped long skirt, her smooth, rounded, pale legs were exposed, a perfectly proportioned reveal that was almost irresistible to any man.
She had been running, so her face was rosy and her features were radiant.
"Who is she?" With a cold question, Davis realized that because she only had eyes for Augustus, she had completely ignored the female Ghost operative with long, fiery red hair standing next to Augustus.
"For God's sake, I don't know."
