In the emperor's bedchamber at the palace, Augustus leaned back in his chair, reading the report Raynor had sent back from Swopes. At first, he merely nodded repeatedly, but by the end he could not help bursting into laughter, even pounding on the desk.
Marshal Raynor had at least studied for a few years and could be considered both literary and martial. Reports that required the emperor's review were generally written by him personally. When mentioning Tassadar's visit to the Purifier mothership Cybros, he had lavishly devoted more than half the report to the amusing matter of Fenix's revised history being uploaded to the entire Purifier data network.
Tragically, Raynor, Fenix's best human friend, had not warned him that the ship of friendship could capsize without warning.
Unaware of this, Fenix simply followed Tassadar to meet Korolariang, the Purifier executor, and a host of other ancient heroes.
Heroes recognized heroes. As their conversation grew more animated, the hypocritical old Purifier veterans began praising Fenix, saying that the younger generation was truly formidable and that he was indeed a heroic figure. Tassadar and Raynor were left dumbfounded, while Fenix, having received unanimous approval from his forebears, was secretly delighted. He had never imagined his reputation had become so great.
When Aldaris had sent him to the Glacius Facility to back up his memories, Fenix had indeed selfishly altered part of the records, polishing up his glorious exploits a little. He had not thought anyone would mind, since it was only a tiny part of his memories, and Purifier memories could not be uploaded to the Khala anyway. Who could have foreseen what would happen later? For all he knew, he might have died one day in the battle to defend Aiur.
At first, the
