Background / History
Raynor was born in 2470 and grew up in Shiloh, an agricultural world. His childhood friend and elementary-school classmate Tom Omo entered the Turaxis II recruit camp with him. In 2488, Raynor joined Company D, 2nd Platoon, 1st Squad of the Federal Marine Corps, where he first met Augustus Mengsk and Harnack Hank. 7 8 752
As a recruit, Raynor was friendly, optimistic, and proud of Shiloh, though he was notably poor at marksmanship. He preferred overwhelming fire suppression to precision shooting and wanted to leave his hometown to see the wider world and pursue justice. 7 12 13
Raynor later joined Augustus's revolutionary cause. He proved a capable pilot and vehicle operator, piloting the Little Devil transport during a storm operation and eventually commanding the Hyperion and a Behemoth-class battlecruiser squadron. His rapidly earned reputation led Augustus to regard him as a trusted right-hand man rather than merely another Heaven's Devils veteran. 128 131 156
During the Mar Sara campaign, Raynor became a Revolutionary Army general and accepted responsibility for Elizabeth Liddy's pregnancy. Their son, John Raynor, was born aboard the Hyperion in 2491; the birth triggered a powerful psionic disturbance throughout the ship. 198 229
Raynor commanded the Char Expeditionary Force during the campaign to reclaim Char. He coordinated Revolutionary Army, Daelaam Protoss, and temporarily allied UED forces against the newborn Overmind, ultimately declaring Char retaken after the Zerg withdrew. The campaign's casualties weighed heavily on him, particularly because he viewed his soldiers as brothers. 472 476 480 482
Following the formation of the Terran Empire, Raynor became the highest leader of the Imperial Marines and a marshal capable of commanding major fleets. He remained Augustus Mengsk's most trusted military subordinate while also serving as the first principal of Sterling Officer Academy. 566 669 687
Appearance
Raynor began as a vigorous young recruit, visibly unlike the weathered, bearded rebel commander he would later resemble. By his early thirties, he was broad-shouldered and tough-looking, with thick black hair; formal Marine dress uniform gave him an imposing presence, though he personally preferred practical combat clothes. 8 687 723 752 773
- Dark hair; described as short dark brown at one point and thick black later. 566 752
- Usually wears Power Armor marked with the Wings of Liberty and Heaven's Devils emblems. 430
- His armor's right shoulder bears a rattlesnake skull-and-spine motif. 430
- Prefers a canvas combat vest and buckskin or deerskin clothing when not in formal uniform. 229 773
Personality
Raynor is fundamentally upright, approachable, and loyal. He does not seek political power and willingly lets Augustus handle the revolution's political direction, focusing instead on protecting people and fighting its enemies. His lack of guile and willingness to take risks for friends earn him respect across the Empire's military and political circles. 317 580 661
He is also humorous, impulsive, and fond of cowboy imagery, Number Eight whiskey, Vulture motorcycles, and banter with old comrades. Despite this casual manner, he becomes increasingly disciplined and burdened by command as the scale of his responsibilities grows. 474 482 635 773
Raynor is deeply affected by losses under his command. He visits wounded soldiers, remembers the dead, and continues fighting through fear and despair because Elizabeth and his children are waiting for him. 480 482 483
