Background / History
Tychus was formerly a Confederate Marine staff sergeant and was close to promotion before attempting to steal battlefield spoils. He was stripped of rank, imprisoned at R-156 Federal Prison, and sentenced to three months of mandatory mine labor. Though his offense was punishable by execution under the Federal Uniform Military Code, he survived and was reinstated as a private. 46
Transferred from Reding III to Fort Howe on Turaxis II, Tychus was assigned to First Platoon, Third Garrison Company under Sergeant Augustus Mengsk. His first day at the fort was marked by cutting in line, attempting to bribe a dispatch sergeant with a cigar, and intimidating James Raynor at Supply Depot No. 7. 46 47
After Augustus intervened in his confrontation with Raynor, Tychus became part of the Heaven's Devils. He initially regarded the unit as temporary associates rather than friends, but Augustus's willingness to share profits and care for his subordinates earned Tychus's respect. 48 80
He later joined Augustus's Revolutionary Army in exchange for employment and a year's salary in advance. During the revolution, Tychus proved valuable in direct combat, command of the Sterling Wolf Hunters, and the piloting of captured warships and heavy mechs. 128 153 156
Tychus's misconduct repeatedly led to detention, demotion, and confinement, but Augustus retained him because of his combat value and their long-standing bond. He was eventually returned to the Royal Guard and became the celebrated pilot of the super-heavy siege mech Odin. 487 607
Appearance
Tychus is a six-and-a-half-foot-tall, massively built man whose thick layer of fat sits over substantial muscle, giving him the gait and presence of a grizzly bear. 46
- Dark-brown hair worn in a crew cut. 46
- Thick eyebrows, a repeatedly broken-looking nose, and a heavily scarred face. 46 804
- Deep facial wrinkles that make his expression especially intimidating when angry. 46
- Dark-brown eyes are noted during his confrontation with Raynor. 47
- Frequently carries or smokes cigars. 606 610
- Commonly wears customized crimson or red-and-gold Power Armor, often decorated with provocative painted figures rather than standard military insignia. 643 757
Personality
Tychus is crude, arrogant, combative, and openly motivated by money, alcohol, gambling, women, and opportunities to acquire valuable property. He is a habitual thief and scam artist who resists discipline, avoids administrative responsibility, and repeatedly exploits his status for personal gain. 156 551 610
Despite this, he is intelligent, observant, and capable of reading people. He knows when to avoid enemies beyond his reach, understands the value of useful allies, and can become focused and serious when his soldiers need leadership. 80 157 606
Tychus rarely gives wholehearted loyalty, but Augustus's protection and generosity eventually earn it. His loyalty to Augustus becomes widely recognized across the Empire, even by people who otherwise despise him. 403 757
Abilities & Skills
Close-Quarters Combat
Tychus is an exceptionally powerful and violent hand-to-hand fighter, particularly while armored.

- His armor-assisted physical strength and momentum make him especially dangerous in confined spaces. 142 643
- He is ordered not to kill captives when Augustus needs enemies alive for intelligence or leverage. 643
Heavy-Weapons Combat

- Uses a Whisper Persuader Heavy Machine Gun while commanding forces against Zerg on Aiur. 403

- Commanded the elite Sterling Wolf Hunters, a Revolutionary Army unit whose members followed him without question. 156
- Calmed frightened airborne troops before a dangerous Tarsonis landing and refocused them on their mission. 157
- Led mixed human and Protoss forces through Zerg-held territory on Aiur. 403
- Escaped a near-suicidal assault while bringing back more than a thousand soldiers, though Odin was left behind. 765
- His limitation is not capability but unwillingness to manage large forces or accept the responsibility of high command. 156 403 551
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Customized CMC Power Armor — Tychus has used reinforced armor with hardened steel plating, shock-absorbing foam, and internal partitions; it can withstand heavy small-arms fire and limited grenade impacts. 142

- Old-fashioned revolver — Carried during Augustus's incognito inspection of Chau Sara. 815
